Ell, if you give a reply for a post that you don't have what is being looked for, then others who can provide it will overlook the post thinking that it has been answered correctly. I have all of what you posted because I have Ancestry World Explorer. Sending to a cemetery costs money and they may or may not have it and they might not reply back if they don't. Also, who knows what that cemetery might charge in excess of the postage. Many are free but some charge a lot.
Respectfully, Ghost

Camarrillo State Hospital death records

I just finished reading " The Keeper of the Keys, by Nadine Scolla. I am also reading " They Call Them Camisoles Revisited". It is scary how the patients were treated, especially knowing that my mom was subject to it.

Over and over in the books it states that the staff did not care about the "crazy people". Most were there for the money and perks they got. They also state that many deaths were unreported or cause of deaths were not given.

As I sit here transcribing funeral records, which include people from Camarrillo State Hospital, I see how true that is. Not one of the people, who has passed away there, has any death information listed. No causes of death or certifying doctor. This makes me sad, but glad my mom made it out alive.

Hopefully there is someway for these peoples families to find out how they passed, so they had closure.

Thank you. These are all records I already have for this couple. I'm really looking for an obit because family thought that Sherman's wife was still living in 1970, so was surprised when the CA death index came up from 1957. Therefor, I would like the obit to determine 1 if she was the right Minnette Parker, which she appears to be, and 2 if a previous marriage was listed. Family stories say she was married before Sherman, but I was unable to find any record of it. Thanks again.

You were a wonderful caregiver. I can only hope that my mother had someone like you watching over her. But, the fact remains that there were other things going on there and yes, a cemetery. My sister visited last year.

You can be proud of your work and nothing takes away from what you did and all the large and small kindnesses.

Hi Maryiola - thanks so much for taking the time to write. I think Shannon may have been referring to a gravesite that is not actually at Cam - I read an earlier post that mentioned a cemetery that the John/Jane Does from Cam tended to go to. Maybe she was referring to that.

It's very comforting to know that you and others were so caring with the patients. I have absolutely no doubt you made a difference. I wish I could think that you were there when my grandmother was but it was nearly 70 years ago. Hopefully she was shown some kindness then too.

It sounds like a different Cam. than I worked at for 25 years and that my husband worked for 38 years. To my knowledge, there was no graveyard at Cam.I never heard of one. I myself reverently prayed for the dying, sat with them, cried for them and prepared their bodies for their final trip to the County they were from for burial. Each patient had an assigned admission number,The first were sent there in 1938 from Metro. I knew several of those men. They were not mistreated. Some were violent and dangerous but most were not. There was something worth knowing in each of them, Some we loved and some we didn't but we treated them with the best knowledge and treatments of the time.
They had families and if they didn't then WE were their family. Yes, some weirdo's got jobs there and were sadistic but they didn't last long. After being retired for more time than I worked, I think often of quite a few of those I was fond of. I wonder if they are alive or dead and I miss the work. Maybe in 25 years I made a difference.

Hi Monica, thanks for reaching out. I actually have read that book. There is a nice person on the board who worked there in and around the time my mother was there who showed lots of compassion to patients. Given what she told me, I suspect experiences varied greatly depending on the individual staff they came in contact with. Some were very lucky and others not so much. Camarillo was a bit notorious.

There is a grave site there containing many, many jane and john does. My mother could be there - or not but California seems to have no sense of morality related to making things right and doing DNA tests. Yes, that means digging up graves but families interested have a right to pursue, if they desire. I and my entire family wants to know.

Best of luck to you! Shannon

Hi Shannon - I have read all your posts with great interest. My grandmother spent a short period of time in Camarillo sometime in the early 1940s. I have had no success getting records for her and considering how old they would be I suspect I won't but I will try some of your suggestions regardless. It's interesting that it can be easier over the phone than in person - I would have guessed the opposite!

With regard to your comments and Gwen's about wondering what the experience of Camarillo would have been like, I'm wondering if you have heard of the book "They Call Them Camisoles". It was written by a woman named Wilma Wilson who spent time there around the same time my grandmother would have, and for the same reason - alcoholism. It's very descriptive of her experience and even illustrated with her own little pictures she has drawn. A fascinating read. It has recently been republished and is available on Amazon.

Cheers,
Monica

One more thing: If they went to Camarillo, its highly unlikely it was voluntary. If you get records, the circumstances as to why she was there will be in them.

I bet you can get info - just bite the bullet and call. Like I said, I found on the phone the employees were compassionate and willing to stretch things. Its federal laws that have gone too far and sometimes used to hide behind. There is a book written by Steve Luxenberg called Annie's Ghosts. Its a true story of this journalist who was searching for info on an aunt he didn't know existed and had been put into hospital care. It gives you a very good idea of what was going on in the hospitals and the thing that hit me was what he experienced trying to get info and what was said to him was nearly verbatim what my family and I experienced. His aunt had some kind of disability so somewhat different but experiences the same.

Sorry to hear about your mom but at least you know more about what happened. There is no documentation anywhere to document what must have happened to my mom. Interestingly, mom also married during one of her "between hospital" time frames. She might have met him in the hospital as he had his own issues. Oddly, we were able to trace him a bit and found he died an indigent with no mention of a wife and no divorce records. Anyhow, I suspect that it was frightening and lonely for folks in those kinds of conditions and probably clung to what comfort they could.

This year I have found out a lot more about my mom. The years she was there were narrowed down to 66-68. I no longer believe she went there voluntarily, at least the 2nd time. These two stints in the hospital were not too far apart. I am not sure how long the first one lasted. In the short few months she was out of the hospital she got married, I'm not sure who he was, had a relapse and was sent back. The marriage was annulled while she was in the second time. After about 4 months I was told she convinced the doctors she was better and was released to the care of my dad, her 1st ex-husband. She wasn't though because a few weeks later, after her release, she took her own life.
It would be nice to validate the information. Too bad they
make it so hard to get the information now.
Gwen

I worked there in the 60's the care we provided was what was recommended at the time. I am aware of one pregnant female, A Jane Doe... After awhile a Psy. TEC from Metro recognized her. I do not remember her name . I was told that if a patient was pregnant they went to a local hospital to deliver or were sent back to the county from which they were admitted This is vague, but what I remember So I saw one pregnant female in 25 years.

P.S. To be fair and for clarification, the early release thing was due to political changes and pressures, not poor hospital practices. There were plenty of health care workers and DRs. who were angry and saddened by having to do that.

I would definitely try then given you have a death cert and SS. Call, and see what you can get. You will scare them off if you mention the pregnancy right off so I would see what you can get first, just to get records (that in my opinion the family is entitled to) and maybe in a second call see if there is anything about your potential sibling.

I was actually able to talk to a doctor who had signed paperwork on my mom back then in Texas. He didn't remember my mother but talked about the severity of the drugs in the day and that they likely had an affect on shortening life expectancy. I bring this up because, depending on what your mom's condition was, those drugs might have affected a pregnancy. Also, there were some less than OK practices going on at Camarillo and other similar hospitals in the US during that time. Therefore, another reason those administrators just don't want hassles years later. In my mom's case, it was clear they were releasing her too early - barely getting her stabilized and then out she went. So, there was that end of the spectrum as well in terms of care.

Good luck in your search! Shannon

I checked the birth index for males born to Mom LYNN in Ventura County in 1968 (or is Lynn your Mom's middle name?)
Michael Gentile was born in 1967, but his Mom's first name was Bettie.
There was also Michael Willis born in 1961 - his Mom's name was Hilda.
Per ancestry.com the only other male born in the 60s to Mom Lynn was just listed as "Allen," born 12/4/1963. I tried to find this birth on the Ventura Co birth index but it wasn't listed.
You might want to try the Recorder's Office, they can probably do a more thorough check of the birth index for you.
Stephanie
Hi there, get ready for a mind mindbogglingly frustrating experience.

First, you need to find if anyone in your family was formally assigned as guardian and/or executor for you mother. You need that paperwork and that person needs to be the one requesting documents from the hospital - start with Camarillo since you know she was there. If you have no formal documents, you will have to get something from an attorney (maybe even declaring your mother dead if you have no death cert. )as due to HIPAA regs, they won't give up documents without something CYA for them. Do this as quickly as you can as the records are being destroyed routinely due to age. The other tip I will give you is to call and ask for the records. They will accept faxed documentation. Whoever you get in the documents department, tell them first that you have a document authorizing release and will gladly fax etc. Give a quick version of the family story. I have found that they want to help and give info, even if they stretch the rules. If you go in person, you will get nothing but resistance and you will be told that HIPAA precludes providing documents even though they are dead. (which of course is insane by itself)I don't know why but believe me, that is the way it is.

If you have a social security number, they can scan online for all the mental hospitals in California to see if your mom was in more than one. You might be able to get more info than anticipated then, perhaps even about a birth. As to the State of New York, try the same approach if you can identify the hospital.

The odd thing is we asked for docs from the California hospitals a couple of times over the years - asking for them all and while we got mostly duplicates, we always got a couple of things that we didn't get in the prior request.

I would also recommend a private investigator after you have done what you can yourself especially if you have the SS number. They can usually check out the last time social security checks were sent and the address. Might be able to help with finding if there was a live birth related to your sibling.

For my family, it is a continuing mystery how our mother got from California to Texas and back. Its also a mystery as to when and how she died (we assume she is dead at this point and took legal steps to declare her so)

It's a travesty and I suspect an unintended consequence of the HIPAA laws to apply to the deceased. There are many, many families who are looking for lost loved ones.

I wish you the best of luck. If you are serious about this search, again, time is of the essence.

Take care, Shannon

Hi- My mother, Phyllis Lynn, was also in Camarillo State Hospital in the later 1960's. I was told she had a baby boy while there. She had asked my uncle to adopt the boy, which he agreed to, but then that never happened for some reason, and next thing they knew, she was at a different psych hospital in New York. She has since disappeared-- no one has heard from her since the early 70's, and no one knows what became of the boy, who would be my half-brother. Is there any way to track children born at Camarillo? Unfortunately, I don't have a birth date for him-- just someone's fuzzy recollection that it was around 1968 or so.

Thank you ELLinSpain. I have found this information on Ancestry.com. I don't know if Laura B Robertson, Laura B Crandall, and Laura B Swartzfager are all the same person. What really puzzles me is in 1981, in her mother's obit, Laura B is listed as Mrs. Fred Downs of Whittier. I cannot find Eleanor Louise Crandall, her sister either. She was listed as Mrs. E.W. "Jack" Robertson. I don't know if the paper has the two switched in the obit.

Thank you for looking up so much information. I do appreciate any help.
I was actually at the Bardsdale Cemetery today. Believe it or not, I actually photographed the headstone of Glenn & Luella (they are buried together). Byron is buried there also & there is a very nice family plot. Here is the obituary:

SAD ACCIDENT AT WILEY’S LAKE – Five Persons Drowned by the Capsizing of a Raft, All Residents of this County – Funerals Wednesday at Filmore and Camarillo

Monday morning while bathing in Wiley’s Lake, a summer resort near Piru, five persons were drowned and three barely escaped with their lives. The victims were Mrs. Wiley and her daughter Glenn, aged 11; Miss Lulu George, aged 22; Belle Sisson, aged 13 of Springville; and Carl Davies of Oxnard, aged 9. Besides those who were drowned, Mr. Broderick, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Wiley; Mr. Davies, father of the boy that was drowned; Mr. Dunn of Hueneme; and little Willie Wiley, a boy of 6, were in the water.

To one who has visited Wiley’s Lake, it seems impossible that such a small sheet of water could be the scene of such a tremendous tragedy. It is barely an acre in size and deep only in a few places. For fathers, a raft has been placed in the water, moored to the shore by a rope. As the edge and shallows of the lake are grown with tulles, the bathers get on the raft, push it out to the center, and bathe from it. In some way the raft was tipped, and the women and children, losing their head, rushed in a body to the opposite side, when of course it capsized.

The only person in the crowd who could swim was J. P. Davies, and the raft when it capsized was forty feet from shore, and when it again righted itself after dropping its load, was twenty feet from the bathers. Mr. Davies attempted to save his son, but the others grabbed him and he went down under water. Almost suffocated, he was forced to let go of his boy and fight the others off. Then, by the aid of a camper named Dunn, they saved the 6-year-old son of Mr. Wiley and young Broderick, but the others were past rescue.

A number of campers witnessed the catastrophe, but it was all over before they realized what had happened. Immediately steps were taken to recover the bodies. Those of Belle Sisson, Lulu George, and Glenn Wiley were brought to the surface in about half an hour, the three being clasped together as they had gone down. It was several hours before the bodies of Mrs. Wiley and Carl Davies were recovered.

Coroner Reilly of Ventura was notified and took the five o’clock train for Buckhorn, the station on the railroad nearest the scene of the tragedy. When he arrived, the bodies had been recovered. The coroner immediately held an inquest. The following persons were sworn as jurors: O. S. Harvey, Geo. McDonald, D. E. Lane, L. P. Guiberson, W. S. Robinson, Emil Hasier, and C. M. Ring. They rendered a verdict of accidental death by drowning in accordance with the above facts.

Mr. Wiley was prostrated by the fearful accident which had cost him the loss of a wife and daughter, and a friend was required at his bedside for several hours. Miss George is a sister of Mrs. Fernandes of Montalvo; Miss Sisson, daughter of Emerson Sisson, well-known in the valley; and J. P. Davies, father of Carl Davies, lives a little way out from this city. The unfortunate victims have other relatives in the county and many friends and acquaintances who were severely shocked at the sad occurrence.

The remains of Mrs. Wiley and child were conveyed to Filmore where they were interred from the Presbyterian Church Wednesday at 10 AM. The bodies of Misses Sisson and George and Carl Davies were brought to Camarillo, where the largely attended funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Baptist Church, Rev. Beckhardt officiating. Three white caskets were lowered at once in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
You are correct, cannot change the spelling on old documents/census and we will never know who the actual informant was that gave the information on the census,to the census taker, only the name of the census taker is given. I thought you might want the correct spelling for your personel files as this Twilley/Twilly family is my direct line that I have been researching for 46 years. If I can help you I will be happy to share.

Good Morning Jayshore,

I copy, verbatim, from records I find & I'm afraid I cannot alter the spelling/s that show on that/those records - sometimes its the actual person that originally gave that info, sometimes the transcriber of that/those records
