Help with Santa Barbara Research?

Classification: Query
Surnames: Barrett, Dotta, Foxen
I am helping a lady get information about the family of her late husband, who grew up around the Santa Barbara area. Since I live in North Carolina, about all I can do is internet research. I have the added disadvantage of not being familiar with the area or with where things are filed in California.

Her husband was Charles Henry "Red" Barrett, who was a legendary high school athlete at Simi Valley Union High School in the early 1930s and then went into pro baseball, playing with the Boston Braves and St. Louis Cardinals. He was born Feb. 14, 1915 in Santa Barbara, according to the information I have.

Red's father was Joseph Warren Barrett, born Dec. 25, 1887, died March 22, 1957; his mother was Josephine Dotta, born March 31, 1887, died May 13, 1974. They were married April 21, 1907.

I have no further information about the Barrett line. According to what I am told, Red's mother's family might have Spanish forebears and also a connection to the Foxen family, which I understand is well known in the area.

If anyone could help me, perhaps with looking up obituaries or the marriage license or give me information about how to proceed, I would be most appreciative.
