Lucinda Smith Swearingen early 1900s

I am trying to find more information regarding Lucinda Smith born 29 Jan 1861 in Big Island, Marion, Ohio. According to family information she married William Van Swearingen. The family had an address for her in Las Animas. I found her there in the 1910 census, listed as a widow, with no children (the family said they never had any children also). But I am not able to find any more on her after 1910.
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you researched contacting the Library? They could answer your question about what newspapers were in operation then. Also, they might be able to assist with the obit.
Also, Look at the cemetery. Who operates it? There might be records there also.
Good Hunting,
Frank

She was born 17 Jan 1916 in Oklahoma, and died in February 1987, most likely in Las Animas - I can not come up with a specific date more than just February.

Thanks much for any help or advice.

Karen

Devern Carter was my great-great-aunt. According to the 1910 census she was living in Las Animas, Colorado in May 1910, at which time she was 11/12 year old, so she was born in about June 1909, probably in or around Las Animas.

Can anyone suggest how to find a more accurate date of her birth, or birth certificate? The only other information I have are her parents (Julius Carter and Nora McPherson) and her date of death -- approximately 1928. Thanks!

I am trying to get some information about my family. In the late 1800s my great grandfather Juan (John) Santistevan moved his family from Taos, New Mexico to Las Animas. His inlaws followed: Squire Thomas Hartt and Juanita Vigil Hartt. They are buried in the Las Animas cemetery. My grandfather Bailey Santistevan Sr. was born in Las Animas. I am tried to locate his baptism. Does anyone know the name of the Catholic church in 1901 that was located in Las Animas? Thanks

POW/MIA Korean War, Bent Co. HUNT

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Bent County, Colorado as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: DUANE MELVIN HUNT
Born: 1931
Date of loss: Feb. 13, 1951. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Hunt family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I'm sorry I can't help you much with your info. Your Samuel C. Riley is the brother of my great grandmother, Rachel E. Riley Amis. I believe it was because Sam moved to Las Animas that Rachel and her three children did too. Rachel and her family had, in 1881, gone to Baxter Co., AR where Sam then lived to see if it was better there than KY or KS. Unfortunately my great grandfather, Wiley Amis, died there and Rachel was left to fend for herself and three little kids. I know she returned to KS and I'm not sure exactly when Sam went to CO but Rachel was there by 1895.

I've been researching this family for a long time and if there's anyway I can help with records prior to CO let me know.

Hello,
So, have you worked the Bishop line any further back than Linda Debord-Bishop? She has all the old stuff.

You perhaps already know that Sudie Bishop came out here from Tennessee. I believe it was in following her older half-brother. She had two sisters that she was pretty close to, Tennie and Dolla, and the older half brother who filed a lawsuit to prevent Granma Dorothy (and Alonzo Hackley Jr.) from inheriting anything Sudie came into when she moved back to Lamar and married the Pearson fellow (that much is on old public records). Sudie Bishop is on the 1910 census for Bent County Colorado as living with her half brother and his wife. Pearson must've died in short order, because she re-married again to Alonzo Hackley and had another son by him.

She is supposedly buried in Wiley, Colorado, having died on the operating table( she had ovarian cancer). The date of that was 1929. Her oldest son died shortly thereafter in 1932 at the age of 20. Her second child, a daughter, Tennie O'Key died as a ward of the state of Colorado in 1991, having been listed as mentally incompetent in that same lawsuit from 1943. The geneology was only found out about it in 1997.

I don't know if this helps you out much. Skitzophrenia (and a watered-down bi-polar disorder with skitzo-effective tendencies) has been something that has been handed down two more generations. You can draw your own conclusions from that as to whom grandmother's father may have been. She, Sudie, did move to Pueblo for two brief years from Lamar, then moved back...about the time it takes to have and wean a baby.

Geneology isn't always nice.

Regards
Andrew

Looking for any info on Sam Carr, a former buffalo hunter in WestTexas, who supposedly tried to ride his horse "Prince" into a saloon in Las Animas and was shot for doing it. The time would have been after 1890. Have some information about Sam's earlier years and would be glad to share .

My mom knew her, except she passed away in 1999.Nora was the younger sister to James Riley. I know that NOra was born in Colorado in 1893.
I found my great grandfather Samuuel Riley in the 1900 census in Bent cty CO. It lists George so apparently he was killed after the census.
Marilyn

The last place I have found her is in Las Animas. Her husband moved to Wendell, Idaho, after her death and lived with his son there. He died in Wendell, but was not buried there. I suspect he is buried with her. I would love to find where they are buried and more about their deaths.

I was wondering if anyone has access to death records from the old Fort Lyon Sanitarium? My husband's grandfather died there of tuberculosis in approximately 1928 give or take a year. There was a newspaper at that time called: The Fort Lyon Scout. Perhaps someone has library access to this old newspaper and can find his date of death and his obituary for me? We are not sure of the order of his name but it was either Elmer Robert Burke or Robert Elmer Burke. We also have photos of him that say "Bob" and "Bobby". He was a veteran gunner on the USS Schley at age 18 in 1920. That is really all we know about him.

I have the Hollyman family in my genealogy family that were in Las Animas Colo and moved to Oregon. The Frank Hollyman in this family was married to a Edna Mae Moore Hollyman. I feel we have the same family. I have a listing for Frank born in Shelbyville Aug 13 1885 and died in Roseburg
Oregon Jan 20 1960. Does this fit in your family? Dee
