Obituary and Story - Mary Jane Young Snook, 09 Dec 1901 (William T. Snook)

Newspaper – Oswego Daily Palladium, Thursday Evening, 26 December 1901

The brief obituary states “Mary Jane Snooks died on Thursday morning, December 9th, age fifty-one years. Funeral was held on Saturday last at the M. E. church; burial at Hillside cemetery.”

Mary Jane Young Snook is my great grandmother. She was born 1851 in Hastings, Oswego County, NY and married Judge Snook, son of Freeman and Lydia “Soule” Snook, approximately 1874. They had four children over the next five years. Then, abruptly it appears; Judge Snook left the area and removed to Colorado in 1879 or 1880. Once in Colorado, Judge Snook changed his name to William T. Snook, married a second time (Clara Zillah Park) and had several more children. They lived in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado.

Mary Jane Snook must have been a special lady having lived the trials and tribulations of life she faced with robust courage, maturity and lots of hard work, no doubt. She managed to raise four children, all of which matured to adulthood, married and had families of their own. They were Georgia Snook VanAuken, Josephine Snook Pickard, Freeman M. Snook and Mary "Mamie" VanAuken. I descend from Freeman M. Snook.

Mary Jane Young Snook appears to be the youngest of five children born to Godfrey and Mary Ann “Yorton” Young. They were all born in Hastings, Oswego County, NY according to the federal census of 1850 and 1860. It is an interesting fact that Mary Jane lost her father at a young age, as well. According to an article that appeared in the Oswego Times & Journal on Wednesday, 26 May 1856, her father Godfrey Young, a cooper by trade, was engaged in a swamp in Central Square getting out hoop timber. The article states he felled a black ash tree which resulted in a fatal accident, crushing Mr. Young. He lived only a few hours after the untimely accident. Unfortunately, this left Mary Jane’s mother (Mary Ann Yorton Young) with a large family of children to raise.

Mary Jane Snook is buried in Hillside cemetery, Central Square, Hastings, NY along side her mother and father.

It is not clear what motivated Judge Snook to leave his young wife and children so abruptly and remove to Colorado; however whatever it was must have been a serious matter. My Aunt, Arlene Louise Snook Morrison, told my mother and me that Judge Snook had “gotten another woman pregnant”. My grandmother (wife of Freeman M Snook, son of Mary Jane) had told Aunt Arlene this. We have heard other stories as well - which pertain to horse thieving, possibly shooting and killing someone. It could well be a combination of all three. What makes the latter difficult for me to accept is the lack of any newspaper article on such an incident, or at least I have been unable to find any.

God bless Mary Jane Young Snook!

I would appreciate information from members of William T Snook’s 2nd family from Colorado that you can share (the former Judge Snook of the Syracuse, NY area) He married Clara Zillah Park in Payson, Utah County, UT, (I believe) and lived in Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado until his death in 1943. Anyone with knowledge please contact me. Thank you, Richard Wheeler
Snook Family of Six Reunited After Separation of 48 Years (1926)

Snook Article, The Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY, Sunday, January 31, 1926 (re-typed below, as originally written)

Snook Family of Six Reunited After Separation of 48 Years

Three Sons and Three Daughters of Snook Couple Meet in Syracuse, were all born in Oswego County and reunite in Syracuse

Brother Bill comes from Far West (Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado), One Sister from New England

Forty-eight years ago there lived in the rustic hamlet of Stewart’s Corner, Oswego County, the six strong sons and daughters of Freeman Snook and Lydia (Soule), his wife.
Time swept the happy family far apart. Mother and father died. Young Bill went west – into the great unknown of the west, and no letters came. John and Milo went to Syracuse where new industries were rising to call young men from the farm. Alice married and moved to Syracuse. Christina and Lottie married and moved away.

Time droned away the years. And yesterday, three gray old ladies and three gray old men, they met again. They met in the home of Milo, the eldest, who is 79 and lives at 701 Willis Avenue, but for the brothers and sisters the dwelling was the farmhouse where they lived together in the far-way buttercup-bloom of their youth. They sat and looked at each other, remembering. After a long time speech came. They talked and clung to each other. Bill was back from the west, Bill who had gone away so long ago. Bill, who all had feared, was scalped these many years.

Wrote Seven Years Ago - At last seven years ago a questioning letter from the west had reached his brother’s house in Syracuse. Joyous to have found each other the trio wrote a renewal of their childhood vows of brotherhood.
Then came a day, less that a month ago, when Brother John wrote Brother Bill that Brother Milo “is in a bad way”. Brother Bill answered: “I’m coming east,” and came.
And here he found the other five with Milo, who was nearly well again from joy.

The six with ages and addresses are:
Milo J. Snook, 79, of 701 Willis Avenue, Syracuse.
Mrs. Christina Carter, 77, of Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Alice Fargo, 75 of 515 Cannon Street, Syracuse.
William Snook, 73, of De Beque, Colorado.
John Snook, 71 of 189 Mayar Street, Syracuse.
Mrs. Lottie Peacock, 69, of Pennellville, Oswego County, NY

All but one has passed the 70+ mark, but they were young with a flush as of youth again at the reunion. Christina has come from her home in Massachusetts and coming to Syracuse has meant a journey for sister Lottie too, but brother Bill, the Young Lochinvar come out of the west, has traveled farthest for the twilight tryst.

Knows West of Years Ago - Bill talks quietly, telling of Indians and animals and bronco-busting and the punching of cows on the plains when men were rawhide. His sister and brothers listen thinking, “What a fine strong young-looking man Bill is – and how much he has seen.” “Why these young cow-punchers of the west these days,” says Bill in laughing scorn, “They stop at the big hotels now and wear white shirts. When we punched cows on the old prairies we didn’t have any shirts.” His sister shivered when Brother Bill showed a bullet wound in his left wrist and remarked laconically, “Redskin – Ambush,” then pointed a leathery finger at the side of his neck and explained, “Mormon.” “Ye see,” he added, “the Mormons didn’t like us felleers around very much in those days and one day near Salt Lake City one of ‘em hit me in the neck with a little .22. I felt somethin’ kinda burn back there and pulled it out. “Huh, says I, “what’s the use of shootin’ a man with that thing!”

Meets His First Indian - There were memories of Indians skirmishes and rifle-battles with skulking horse-thieves, back in those 1880’s, but the one Brother Bill told best was the tale of the first Indian he ever saw. “I was sittin” one day,’ he said with his eyes on the far-off past and a blue little twinkle in them, “just sitten” eatin my lunch. I’d been cutting poles all morning and I had a big load of “em on my wagon a little ways away with my ax a-leaning up against it. “I was thinking of Indians. The night before they’d killed a man and a woman and three kids a little ways down the crick. The Utes was on the war-path. “I was thinking those things when I feel something light-like on my shoulder and turning quick I see a big tall Indian, all painted up, just standing there with a kind of red skin grin on his face. “I was scared white, and if I’d had my ax there I’d “a” cut him in two if I could. But my ax was a hundred foot away and he was just looking at me. White Boy Heap Scairt. “After a while he says, “Woof, white boy heap scairt, heh? And he wasn’t lyin’ none either.” Brother Bill concluded abruptly with a smile that meant no bloodshed. Bill is reticent as the old west but his brothers and sisters soon learned the story of those 48 years; How Bill had gone to Canada from the farm and then started for Colorado with a shipment of horses; how he trapped and hunted in the mountains around Denver where the Ute and the Crow, the silver-tip grizzly and the mountain desperado made life but a dangerous gamble; how he roamed to Utah in the heyday of the Mormons; returned to run a store at Grand Junction, Colorado, a frontier town on the new railroad, and how he finally settled down on the 160-acre farm in De Beque where he lives now with his family and his beloved horses.

Daughter Champion Cow-Girl - His daughter, Miss Idella Snook, was the champion cow-girl of the state one year, Brother Bill’s brothers and sisters learned, and she and his two sons have had numerous offers to enter the movies to make films of the wild west. But the father knew and loved the real wild west and they refused to take part in an imitation.

William Snook had been married before he went west, and has several children in Syracuse and vicinity who had been lost to him all their lives. It was after their mother’s death that their father went west. “Coming back to Syracuse is like a dream,” exclaimed Brother Bill, shaking his head as Rip Van Winkle may have shaken his. “I wouldn’t recognize a thing. All the old town is gone. All this is new.”
“Are you going to stay here?” he was asked.
Emphatically he made reply, “I wouldn’t stay here if you gave me the city. I’m going back west again.”

Others Have Things To Tell - Brother bill’s was the most picturesque career, but all the old people had many things to tell. Milo is a factory foreman and John a shipper. Both have lived in Syracuse most of their adult lives. Their sisters too had much to tell, the facts of six lives which time has so strangely thrust apart to reunite in the twilight of their ages.

Around the six-were gathered at the little reunion their children and grandchildren, for many of their offspring and descendants live in Syracuse or near. It was the fist time the six had met in 48 years – yes, and the last in life, they knew, for Bill goes west again and they are old.
Benjamin H. MARCH and Jasper G. MARCH - Barbers in Grand Junction around 1910.

I'm looking for a pair of brothers and their families who moved from upstate New York to Grand Junction, Colorado around 1910. They are in the census for 1910 together. Ben moved his family to Moab, Utah by 1920 but Jasper and his wife stayed to run a barber shop and hotel on Grand Avenue. I'm trying to get information on the wives, who are both second wives. Ben had two children, a boy who died in Moab and a daughter, Hazel. I can find nothing on Hazel after Grand Junction. Ben and his wife died in Oregon in 1950. Jasper had a daughter Ethel, who appears to have moved to Moab with her uncle Ben. Jasper and his wife appeared to stay in Grand Junction until after 1930 and they may have passed away there. Anyone have a connection to this family or information. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have an old black and white photo that says:
"Ord, Terry, Routson & Holmes" on the back
The four men are sitting on the porch of:
"Big Creek Mercantile Co."

It is thought that it may be located in the Grand Mesa area near Colbran maybe. It could be in some other state, but I assume it is in Colorado.

The men are probably geologists, as the person who owned the photo was a geologist (Bill Cox). Bill worked in Nevada, Utah and Colorado in the 1940's.

Any help locating this place or these men would be greatly appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

I was wondering if there is someone who lives in Grand Junction who could look to see if there is a marriage record for me. My gr grandparents mentioned being on a wagon train and marrying in Grand Island, Neb. but then I found Grand Junction in Colorado and wonder if someone at the paper may have gotten confused or even my gr grandparents. They lived just about thier whole married life in Colorado and it just seem to make sense. Here is what information I have:

Nellie Reynolds (Bride)
McClellan Smith or George M. Smith (Groom)
June 6, 1888 is the date they gave for being married.

If there is a newspaper article about it or an actual record I will send for it but if someone could look for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for relatives of Army Air Force Staff Sgt. Harry B. Queen of Onset, Massachusetts, a World War II MIA whose missing aircraft was recently discovered in a remote region of India. My own uncle, 1st Lt. Irwin Zaetz, was also an MIA from that same aircraft. My family is trying to contact all families of crew members of that aircraft to notify them of the news of this discovery and allow DNA identification of the remains discovered at the crash site. Previous research of mine indicates that Sergeant Queen's second cousin (name known but not permitted here under the rules of this forum) may be living in the Highland Park or Littleton area of Colorado. Any assistance in locating relatives of Sergeant Queen would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know a good place to find early city directories beginning around 1900 to 1930? I am not too familar with the Palisade and Grand Junction area. Thanks!

Looking for a cemetery lookup of Eva Hill (married name), or Eva Phelps. Her children were three step children from a previous marriage to William Phelps. her children were Boyd Phelps, Helen Phelps, and Hazel O Phelps. Hazel became a orphan later, and I think her mother Eva might have passed away near Gran Junction. The 1910 Census said this family was in Gran Junction or Mesa Co.Eva was married to a Horace Hill in 1910. Any information would be appreciated.

James

seeking obit. help for Fruita, CO 1920

I am hoping to find some help in locating an obiturary for Martha Gibbs Rose who passed away in Fruita Feb. 25 1920. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore, OK. Martha's full name is, Martha Jane Scott Gibbs Rose. She was born in Tipton, Iowa 13 Mar 1843. She married Joseph Lewis Gibbs 09 Sep 1859 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. Martha and Joseph moved to Claremore, OK sometime in the 1880s. Joseph died in 1910, it seems Martha remarried a
F.G.Rose, possibly Fred Rose, hard to read his 1920 census entry, and was living in Fruita, CO at the time of her death. Her death certificate gives her full name as Martha Gibbs Rose. I don't know where or when she remarried or when she moved to Colorado. Any help in finding her obit. is greatly appreciated, as I live out of Colorado state.
Thank you for your interest
Connie

I am looking for information on Joel Garber, he moved his family to Mesa Co. in 1904. I have found his wife, Martha in the 1910 census at Clifton but appears that Joel died between 1904 and 1910. Does anyone know where he is buried in that area? I would appreciate any info on him or his family in CO. Joel was born in 1831. Thanks.

Sarah C. Shay obit or cemetery record

I am specifically looking for an obituary and/or cemetery record for Sarah C. Shay (nee' Hendershot) who is said have died in 1902, in Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado (at least that's our best guess). One record suggests she died in March 1902. The family is found in the 1900 U. S. Census for Mesa County; thus, it seems reasonable Sarah died there, as well. Sarah was born in about 1847 in Ohio. She married Morris Shay (b. 1853 in NY), we believe in about 1882. Their daughter Quinnie May Shay was born in 1897 in Albuquerque, NM, but the family then moved on to Grand Junction. Morris, it appears, worked for the railroad. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for any info on Les Kline (my grandfather). I believe he was born in Grand Junction on 10-9-12 and not sure if he is still living. If he is deceased, he would likely be buried in Grand Junction. He had two brothers, Earl Richard (b 11-22-10, d 4-51) and Harry Raymond (b 10-28-17, d 7-24-72), and a sister, Mildred May (b 7-31-15). Their parents were Edward Kline and Eva Bays - no info on them. Eva Bays later marrried a Kilgore (no first name) and they had two children, Charles J Kilgore and Theresa J Kilgore.

Any further info on any of these relatives would be appreciated.

Ted Eyle Hardcastle was born March 16, 1925 in Grand Junction Co and died there May 14, 1994. His wife Peggy J. Hardcastle was born Jan 31, 1925 and died on November 30, 2000 in Grand Junction, CO.

I would appreciate someone looking up their obituaries for me because it is not likely I will get to Colorado anytime soon. I live in Oklahoma and am disabled, so I do not travel much.

Peggy Jean Hardcastle was the daughter of my husbands great aunt Minnie Horn Seaton. I am particularly interested in whether she and Mr. Hardcastle had any children.

Any assistance extended to me will be so very greatly appreciated. I am willing to repay any expenses incurred in relation to this search, or if you have someone you are trying to research in Oklahoma, I will be most happy to help you if I can.

My mom is looking for the above man. He was her fiance back in 1966. He was killed May 3rd, 1967, was born either in 1950 or 51 on the same day. All she remembers is that he was buried in a military cemetary in Grand Junction. One of her gueses was Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Grand Junction but has not been able to find the cemetary he is buried in. Is there anyone that could help find him and take a picture of the stone for her? We live up in Washington State and have no access to a car or nothing so we can't make it down. Any help would be greatly appericated. Thank you!

Jacob and #3 wife Zella (Philpot) Woldridge came from Blaine Co., OK (1900) to Grand Junction, Mesa Co., CO before 1910. Jacob was born in Menard Co., IL in 1863 and came to McPherson Co., KS with his parents before 1880. He married #1 wife Lubecca Tod Baker there abt. 1886 and she died after 1st child - Nettie Lubecca Woldridge. His #2 wife was Tempey Cora Allen m. 1889 and she died 1890. He then left and went to Oklahoma and remarried to Zella abt 1898. Their children: Agnes, Robert, Lewis were born in Oklahoma and a last child, Rex Allen Woldridge born in Colorado in 1914. The 1920 census shows Zella with the children in Grand Junction and no sign of Jacob. By 1930 she shows she's divorced.
Our desc. from Jacob's dau Nettie who m. Albert Bouse in Blaine Co., OK 1906, however we would like to fill in the blanks on Jacob's other children, some of whom went to California. Glad to share what little we do know.
Pamela G.
