If you've not done it, you might try and get a copy of the marriage record and see if it lists parents:
John C. "Cadwalder" and Viola Nichol were married Feb.16,1893 in Madison Co.,IL.
as found here:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marri...
Resonably certain it is the correct couple because:
In the 1900 Otero Co. census, they are:
Cadwalader,John-born Dec.1866;33;born IL
wife-"Nichol"-born Feb.1872-28;married 7yrs;4 children born, 2 living;born IL
Grace-born Nov.1894-5;born IL
Ralph-born Sept.1899;9m;born CO
CA death index gives the maiden name of Ralph Cadwalader's mother as "Nichol";so there must have been misunderstanding when recording her name by the census taker in 1900;thereafter she was "Viola". They lived in El Paso County in 1910, were back in Otero County 1920,30--and perhaps died in Arkansas?
Have to wonder if Eli Cadwalader and Hannah Lucas divorced and he moved to CO is how John ended up there?
The 1880 Jersey Co.,IL census gives her name as "Lucas", while the children are "Cadwalader"; she listed herself as widowed--which may mean widowed, abandoned or divored, given the times.
There is an Eli B. Cadwallader in CO marriages, who married a Margaret Crockett in 1882 in Denver; he is listed in the 1900 Denver Directory as a meat cutter, she is shown widowed in Otero County in 1900, with children Frank,May and Ruth. Eli B. Cadwalader applied for an invalids pension in 1891 CO,having served in the IL Infantry-Civil War. Margaret applied for a widows pension in July of 1900. He is buried in Manzanola Cemetery-born Feb.19,1841,died Feb.24,1900.
