My ancestor is William DUDLEY who according to tradition in the family, was a native of Sheen, on the south side of the Thames in the county of Surrey. His marriage in the handwriting of Mr. Whitfield is on the records of that church under date of August 14th, 1636 to Jane LUTMAN, who came to Guilford with him and was the mother of his children. They came from Oakley, England to Guilford, CT in 1639 under the leadership of Rev. Henry WHITFIELD, having left England dissatisfied with the affairs of church (Puritans) and state (under King Charles I) aboard the "St. John" on which another of our ancestors sailed, John PARMELEE.
He was a man of property, but bore few offices of trust among the planters. He was probably about 25 years old when he came to Menuncatuck. William Dudley was the 14th signer of the Plantation Convenant and died in Guilford 16 Mar 1684.
