Wallingford land records

This is a totally new avenue of exploration for me and I need some advice as to how to best approach this search. I am trying to determine how my great-grandfather Truman Greenslit came to own and live on the piece of property he farmed in Wallingford, CT in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He lived on what my older relatives always called the "Hartford Turnpike" at the corner of Cheshire Road. I'm wondering if this land was originally owned by the Oneida Community, if my great-grandfather inherited it from some family member, or if he purchased it. What information do I need to have in order to do a search for this information? Who would have these records -- the town, the county, the state? I don't live in Connecticut, so I'm not familiar with how things are done there, nor am I able to do them in person. Thanks for the help.
