While awaiting some information respecting the Barrows families, of Mansfield, and the Binghams, of Windham, both quite numerous, which we shall publish soon, we give a few scattering names and dates, found in Windham records.
BARNS.
NATHANIEL BARNS m. Hannah Jennings, the first child born in Windham, according to tradition. She was the dau. of Jonathan Jennings, and was b. Feb. 15, 1689. The date should probably be, as we now reckon, 1690, for Cates first appeared here in the spring of 1689, and for a time he and his negro man were the only inhabitants. The date of the marriage is not given, but the birth of their son Nathaniel, who was b. March 10, 1714, is recorded in Windham. They afterwards removed to Middletown and had a number of children. She was living and is mentioned in her father's will, dated Jan. 1, 1731-2.
The tradition that she was the first child born in Windham is very probable. The town record states that Ebenezer Jennings (b. Feb. 18.1691) was the first child born in Windham; but that statement is an interlineation, and was in a different hand and added at a much later day than the original record of his birth. On the grave-stone of Ebenezer Jennings, who d. in 1753, and which was probably erected soon after, it is stated that he was the first male child born in Windham, implying that a female child was born previously; and if such was the case, it was undoubtedly Hannah Jennings; for there is no account of any other family who had a child born there so early.
