Hello,
I was just looking through my old postings on this Board and was reminded of how much information I did not know 7-8 years ago. It's also a reminder to researchers looking at old postings on the Boards to check out the newer postings to see if there is .better. information.
I found the probable marriage for John and Mary in Stonington, CT, and it was around 1855. No one seems to know why they married there, but Mary's older half-sister from Westport, MA, also married there. So, there must have been some connection for the extended family.
And, John and Mary "Molly" DEXTER had 3 daughters while living in John's hometown of Killingly. Unfortunately, one daughter died at Age 2 and one daughter died at Age 14. Their surviving daughter, Clara DEXTER, married in Killingly to Abner YOUNG. They had 2 or 3 children, but they also lost a 2-yr-old daughter. Their surviving child was a son, Earle YOUNG, who married and moved to New Haven.
I would "LOVE" to find out that they had a "secret child" - a daughter born to Clara in Feb. 1889 - where Abner might not have been their father. Clara's parents moved from CT to MA in late 1880's, and took in a baby girl in 1889 or 1890. They adopted her in 1892 and changed her name to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. That little girl grew up to become my grandmother. (She was re-orphaned in 1899 and spent from Age 10 to 20 in "homes" in Downton Boston.)
