New Middletown First Settlers Web Site

Middletown Conn. Genealogy Researchers:

I'm glad to report that the Society of Middletown (Conn.) First Settlers new content-rich web site has been online in its entirety for one month now. For an introductory period the entire site will be accessible to all. Eventually access to the Member Area will be restricted by password, as our board felt that the member area content would provide incentive for membership, along with our newsletter, The Middler. But in any case, even in the public area there will always be plenty of useful information for Middletown genealogy and local history enthusiasts.

The site features biographical sketches of the first settlers, local history essays, a directory of research destinations, a comprehensive bibliography, an archive of past newsletters, links to relevant books online, membership information, and much more.

You can find the site via Google: "Middletown First Settlers". (Some old dead links from our old web site may show up, but they will fade away in the near future.) Or you can bookmark this link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctsmfsd/Index.html

Feel free to pass on information about the site --- or the SMFSD --- to interested researchers.

R.W. Bacon
Editor, The Middler
Newsletter of the Society of Middletown (Conn.) First Settlers Descendants
Request to Meet with Cousins--Mar 29-31--Descendant Visiting Middletown

Hello,

My name is Kristin Rivers and I am planning a trip from Saturday, March 29th to Monday, March 31st to visit Middletown and Lebanon to research my family history. I have quite a few ancestors who were either born, married and/or died in these two towns (listed below) and so I am planning to visit cemeteries, libraries and any historical societies and/or museums that may be open at that time.

Donna from the Middlesex County Historical Society has agreed to meet with me from 9am-1pm on Sunday. Is there anyone else who would like to get together to discuss this amazing place and its people Sat evening, Sunday (after my meeting with Donna) and/or Monday morning?!

I am so excited because as a public school teacher with three children living in San Jose, CA, I would not have anticipated being able to make this trip but my school district is sending me to a teaching conference in New York City beginning on Monday, March 31st and I was able to convince the district to allow me to fly in early and pay for my own room and board in order to make the side trip up to Connecticut!

So, I am flying in late Friday night and will arrive at the Newark Airport early Saturday morning. I'm planning to rent a car and drive up to your area that morning. So, I was hoping that you would please suggest where I should go while I'm there. I have listed out the names and their connections to the two towns hoping that you may have access to cemetery/birth and/or marriage records that might help point me in the right direction to learn as much about my ancestors as I can in the short time that I'll have there. Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you feel could help. Thank you! And if you ever need anything from San Jose, CA. You know who to ask!! :-)

My Lebanon & Middletown Direct Ancestors:
David BLISS (my 5th great grandfather) b. 1769 in Lebanon
Elizabeth BLISS (my 4th great grandmother) b. 21 Oct 1798 in Lebanon
Israel BLISS (my 6th great grandfather) b. 17 Apr 1739 in Lebanon
John BLISS (my 7th great grandfather) m. 21 Feb 1719 in Lebanon
John BLISS (my 8th great grandfather) d. 20 Sep 1747 in Lebanon
Elizabeth JOHNSON (my 5th great grandmother) m. 24 Feb 1796 in Lebanon
Mary STILES (my 6th great grandmother) b. 28 Apr 1735 in Lebanon
Hannah TICKNOR (my 7th great grandmother) m. 21 Feb 1719 in Lebanon

Mary ANTHONY (my 10th great grandmother) d. 30 Mar 1691 in Middletown
Elizabeth BLAKE (my 8th great grandmother) b. 16 Mar 1679 and d. 25 Jan 1698 in Middletown
John BLAKE (my 9th great grandfather) d. 11 Nov 1690 in Middletown
Mary COLLINS (my 9th great grandmother) b. 11 May 1666 in Middletown
Nathaniel COLLINS (my 10th great grandfather) m. 3 Aug 1664 in Middletown
Hesther CROW (my 10th great grandmother) m. 23 Aug 1700 in Middletown
John HALL (my 11th great grandfather) m. 26 May 1673 in Middletown
Richard HALL (my 10th great grandfather) m. 27 Mar 1691 in Middletown
Sarah HALL (my 9th great grandmother) b. 16 May 1654 in Middletown
Giles HAMLIN (my 10th great grandfather) b. 1622 in Middletown
John HAMLIN (my 9th great grandfather) b. 14 Dec 1658 in Middletown
John HAMLIN (my 8th great grandfather) b. 16 Jul 1687 in Middletown
Mahitabell HAMLIN (my 7th great grandmother) b. 6 Feb 1710 in Middletown
Daniel HARRIS (my 10th great grandfather) d. 30 Nov 1701 in Middletown
Mary HARRIS (my 9th great grandmother) d. 1 Aug 1740 in Middletown
Isaac JOHNSON (my 9th great grandfather) d. 3 Feb 1719 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 6th great grandfather) b. 21 May 1726 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 7th great grandfather) b. 26 Aug 1702 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 8th great grandfather) b. 9 Mar 1677 in Middletown
Mary ROGERS (my 6th great grandmother) m. 14 Aug 1746 in Middletown
Mary WELD (my 10th great grandmother) d. 5 Sep 1711 in Middletown
Mary WHITING (my 10th great grandmother) m. 3 Aug 1664 and d. 25 Oct 1709 in Middletown

Thank you, again,
Kristin

There were some very interesting posts by "Peggy" at infocollection@aol.com regarding Nathaniel. These were around June 2001. She mentioned letters of Seldon and Lyle Bacon.
Lyle was my mother's uncle and I have some letters that he wrote to his brother Knox.
I'd like to compare notes with Peggy, but her email address does not seem to work.
Does anyone have her current email?

I also have a most interesting account of Stephen Bacon (of Middletown) and his exploits in the French/Indian War as well as the Revloutionary War. I don't know who wrote it nor if the account is fact or fiction but, if real, he was quite a soldier (makes Rambo seem like a wimp!)

Any help would be welcome.
Terry Gorton
Walnut Creek, CA
terry_gorton@earthlink.net

I'm redoing the Stocking Ancestry book by Hobart Stocking. I am combining his work with what I have. Hobart's book was a revised version of the older Stocking ancestry. There are errors but I hope to get the whole thign into my database by the spring. Then I can work on building stories and adding generations. I just wondered if anyone else is interested..
Deb

Harrisons' of Litchfield, Connecticut

I have some Harrison information that I hope I can share and someone can fill in some blanks I have.
I am looking for a Thomas Harrison, born about 1787 in Connecticut, he died 1861 in McKean Twp, Erie, PA. I am almost certain this Thomas, son of Samuel Harrison is part of my line.
Samuel Harrison had these children:
Ira born 1895 married Deborah Washburn in NY, this is
my line
Thomas
Charlotte
Ellen
The name of Samuel's wife and his death date is unknown. However we do know he was born Nov 10, 1763 in Litchfield, Conn. We think he died approx 1810. 1800 Fed census we know he was married and had one son and one daughter under ten. His wife shows in the 16-27 category and Samuel wa between 27-45. His property was disposed of in 1808 which may have been the year he died, he did not appear in the Fed Census 1810. Based on solid evidence from prev. family researchers, Samuel had 4 children named Ira, Thomas, Charlotte and Ellen and this coincides well with the info on the 1800 census.
We suspect that Samuel's couzin, Salmon, very possibly helped in bringing up Samuel's children after his death. There are varying facts that confirm this in the census.
(Salmon was born in Williamstown, MASS after his father moved there from Litchfield, CN) He then came to NY.
Samuel and Salmon are first cousins and had the same grandfather which trails back to the same ancestral line to Richard who came to New Haven, Conn in 1638.
The THOMAS mentioned above that is the mystery as to who's son he is.....married a Anna Clark who was born abt. 1788 in Massachusetts and died in McKean, Erie, PA.
Their children are: IRA, Daniel, George, Lucy Emily, Giles and Mary.
I hope someone can help me!!
Ginny

I have just been advised by Jean Hebert, Editor of the CT
VACATION GUIDE, published by CT Office of Tourism, that for
the First Time, our FOUNDERS ROCK will be listed in the 2002
Edition of the Guide. This is a breakthru for the Society
because Middletown has never been mentioned in this popular
publication that is distributed to tourist planning to visit. Amen!
He was related to the Colemans from Cork Ireland, mainly the family of Thomas Coleman and Mary Clue/Clew. Timothy Coleman ,the son, came first, then the rest. I believe the Colemans of Hartford are related but don't know for sure, as that is where Timothy was headed befor he stopped by his uncle William Clew in Middletown in 1880..Looking for any family knowledge of The parents of Thomas Coleman and Mary Clew. I know that Mary and William were possibly brother and sister. Any help would be appreciated.....Thank you.....Pat

Eno, returned to CT from Arkansas after the death of her husband at the outbreak of the War Between The States in November of 1862. It is presumed that Mrs. Ellen Elizabeth Ward Eno died after returning to CT. Her husband, and two daughters are buried in Fairview Cemetery here in Van Buren, Arkansas. I would like to know what cemetery Mrs. Eno is buried in, and if possible, procure a digital photo of her gravesite to help complete my research. I am more than willing to provide photos of the Eno's gravesites here. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Any help appreciated
thanks for you time,
jean t

This site is being added to constantly, and eventually will contain the Barbour Collection for Middletown. (It will take a while......this is a huge undertaking.) Bookmark this site.

My ggggg grandfather Baisey Baker lived in Middletown for a while, died there September 4, 1723 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.

I've seen documents indicating the land he owned was bounded by Hornet Bay, the "highway," and Hamlin's land. There also is a reference to Boggy Meadow.

Can anyone enlighten me where this might be, keeping in mind I'm not familiar with Middletown.

Please e-mail me direct at bills4beer@hotmail.com.

Now though I have more information.
Edward was from New London County Connecticut his fathers name was Rufus Case and his mothers name was Sarah Gilpin.
He married Caroline Robbins on June 1 1892 at the time she was 37 years of age and he was 35.5 years of age and it was a first marriage for both. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Maria Hall Robbins. They were married in Farmingdale NJ where Caroline was from. Witnesses to the marriage were Mary E Allaire (Caroline's sister) and her husband William L Allaire. I did post this on the Connecticut board also I am just trying to cover all my bases. Any help and any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Beth:)

Michael Clark

I am interested in any information on Michael Clark son of Lamberton Clark and Sarah Foster who was born 1777 of Middletown, Middlesex CT. I say 'of' because I have looked at a town record that was Microfilmed and it just listed Lamerton with his two wives and their children and didn't really specify if they all were born there possitively or not. They were living there in 1790. Does anyone know where this Michael went? I have a grandfather Michael born about 1774 who ends up in Steuben county, NY and then Liberty twp. Mckean county, PA. He married Mathilda and had children Susannah Ellen, Daniel, and Avery(ones I've identified.)
There is an older Michael Clark living in Middletown who marries a Huldah Warner around 1886. One of the Michael Clark's marries a Huldah Tryon in 1821 in Glastonbury.
I'd appeciate any help in sorting out information that could help me evaluate whether this Michael could me mine. I've eliminated the one in MA, NH and VT.
Michael son of Lamberton & Sarah has a brother Lamberton who moves to VT then jefferson NY and then on to Onondaga Cty NY. Maybe on down to Tioga County, PA.
Thanks for your time, Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Heather Dodge

Parents?
He was married to Violet Bowes, where? they had a daughter Flora Violet born 1881, CT where? A son Harry William born 1882, Stamford, CT. they then migtated to Phila, PA where my Grand Father George Edward JR was born in 1892.
George E. SR was an Iron Moulder by trade. He had 8 uncles and his father was born in CT of English decent. Trying to find where he was born and his parents.

I have found a Middlesex, Middletown Ct directory 1882 to 1901, which has a George Chamberlain, occupation Iron Moulder boarding with a Charles C. Chamberlain also an Iron Moulder. Main St,or Main and Flower Sts,(div Millers Farm?) Middletown.
There is also a William Chamberlain and an Edward Chamberlain also Iron Moulders boarding with Charles. It seems that this Charles could be an uncle to George. I find Charles in the census index living in Middletown from 1850s till 1890s then he is in 1900 census living with his son Edward H. Chamberlain at same address. Charles born in 1825, born in Ct, father born in Ct, mother born in Ireland.

Anyone have info on Chamberlains living in Middletown, Ct early 1800 or late 1700.
Louise

I have recently posted a Rootsweb query regarding the above individual and his marriage to the sister of my 3rd great grandfather, Ezra Cole.
Her name was Anna Cole and she was born on July 15, 1783 in Windsor, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
A lady named Sharon Schrag replied to that query to inform me she was a descendant of Isaac Cornwell but that she had very little info at hand. She suggested I contact Gale Thomas Howe-Cornwell and that he had a Rootsweb website.
