Soward descendants

I am searching for any descendants of the Soward family of Kent County, Delaware. George Soward died in Kent County between 1776 and 1778. On 21 April 1737 he was married to Elenor Vanderford in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, which was probably his place of birth as well. George's parents were Thomas and Susanah (maiden name not known) Soward/Seward of Queen Anne's County, Maryland. George's will indicates he had the following children: Thomas Soward, George Soward, Susanah Shahan or Sheehorn, Sarah, and Rebecca. Also mentioned in the will are a granddaughter named Sarah Swift and a granddaughter named Elenor Thomas. Other legatees in the will include George Soward son of the testator's son George and still another George Soward, son the the testator's son Thomas. Would like to exchange info with any descendants.
H. Martin Soward, III
h.martin.soward@sbcglobal.net

Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Kent Co., DE, question. Cemetery is located on Routes 10 & 13.

Hi. I'm wondering if by any chance a book recording tombstone locations in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, Kent. Co., DE (cemetery located on Routes 10 and 13), happens to exist, if any of you happen to have a copy of such a book, and, if so, if you will please do a location look-up for me.

I've just learned that my great-uncle and his wife are buried in that cemetery, but have been told it's a vast cemetery, which will make locating the tombstone(s?) in question difficult to do if no finding tool exists.

The name of my great-uncle was Thomas Wallace ("Wallace") KNOWLES (Aug. 1897 - December 1973), and the name of his wife/widow was Clara Elizabeth (nee Thompson) KNOWLES (Dec. 1897 - April 1982). A Find A Grave volunteer is willing to visit the cemetery and photograph the tombstone(s?) in question for me if I can inform them of the precise location. I thought asking people on this board might be the best way to get a quick answer, if such a book as mentioned above does exist. (I know that there are books of the nature I've mentioned that document cemeteries throughout Sussex Co.)

If anyone is able to answer with information about the requested tombstone(s?) location(s), please feel free to e-mail me directly at Genplant29@aol.com , so I can get back to the volunteer ASAP. If e-mailing me, please put "Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, request" in the Subject line, so I'll know your message isn't spam. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Dave Wilson
Genplant29@aol.com

Is anybody out there researching Sapps, Moodys, Williams or Grays? All these names started out in Kent Co. DE. but ended up in Callaway Co, MO.

Specifically, I am trying to find Ephraim Sapp whose son, Levi, married Trana or Traney Williams about 1802, Alexander Moody, (I'm not choosy on them, any Moody will be of interest) & William and Emily Gray. I know next to nothing about any of these people except they all are part of my lineage. After three years of looking, I'm beginning to feel a little frantic...talk about brick walls !

If anyone could help me out, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Looking for information on Samuel Prevo, Sr., b. 1751 in France, d. 1789, possibly in NC. Came to Kent Co. DE during that time frame. He had a son, Samuel Prevo, Jr., b. 1771, who later moved to Clark Co. IL and possibly another son, John Prevo, c.. 1767 who we believe settled in Wayne Co. KY. He moved from NC to KY and d. 1840. My line runs through John Prevo's son James B. Prevo, b. 1799 in either NC or KY.
Probate records in Delaware Archives

I have found probate records at the DE. State Archives. One is 16 pgs and the date of the record is 1881-1889. The other is 20 pages and dates 1826-1869. Neither probate record contains a will. The Delaware Archives wants to charge me for all 36 pages. I don't understand how there can be so many pages in a probate record covering so many years...especilally since the deceased were poor renting farmers.
Can anyone explain what might be in a probate record that is 16 or 20 pages long and dates 1826-1869. Thank you, JOY

There were thirteen or so families from Cape Cod, Ma., who migrated from Barnstable County around 1710. I have been trying to identify them and their relationships. The ones I know of are: Jeremiah Nickerson, Nathaniel Tomlin, Nathaniel Hall, Michael Stuart, James and Mercy Griffith, Robert Eldredge, but there are apparently others I've missed. The above were all from Monomoit--now Chatham. Elisha and Isaac Snow from Truro also came. Not all stayed in Kent Co; it appears the Griffiths returned after a year?

I have a James Jarrell of Delaware as part of a distant family tree. This information was given to me by letter back in 1996 and no source was listed with it. The only information I have is that James Jarrell was born circa 1841 and died in 1904. He was married to a Clara Short who was born in Delaware circa 1859. The nearly 20-year gap between their birth dates might mean that Clara was a 2nd wife, but that's just a guess on my part. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Joshua Lister of Odessa, Delaware
The original creator of my Lister family is a
man named Joshua Lister who was born approximately
1740 and he died in 1819 in the St. Georges Hundred
area of New Castle County, Delaware. It was adjacent
to the Appoquinimink. Joshua Lister resided very close
to the wheat-shipping port of Odessa, Delaware. He was
a wheat farmer. At the time of his death in 1819
Odessa, Delaware was called Cantwell's Bridge. It had
approximately thirty houses and a post office.
Currently in the present year of 2008
Odessa, Delaware is a historic town for tourists and has
a population of several hundred people.
Joshua Lister had the following children: Timothy,
Mary, James, Henry and Joshua. He married
Nancy Hartshorne in Caroline County, Maryland in the early 1790's. It is highly likely that either Joshua Lister
or his predecessor ancestors immigrated to colonial
Delaware and then into Caroline County, Maryland from the
Yorkshire, England area. It is also highly probable that
Joshua Lister has relatives currently in and surrounding
Dursley, England in Gloucestershire County.
Joshua Lister's family was strongly Methodist. It is
likely that he is buried in a Methodist cemetery in
or surrounding Odessa, Delaware or its nearby environs
of Middletown, St. George, Townsend, Blackbird, etc. in Delaware. Kent County, Delaware records show that he
was not buried in that county nor was he buried in
Caroline County, Maryland where he maintained a farm
during the Revolutionary War. His physician at the time
of his death was Odessa, Delaware physician
Arnold Naudain who was later to become a Delaware senator.
Joshua Lister's grave digger was Phillip Brannock.
Almost all Listers who have ever resided since
pre-Revolutionary War times in Kent County, Delaware and
Caroline County, Queen Anne's County and Talbot County, Maryland are biological members of my identical Lister family. There have been only a very few exceptions to this general rule.
Can any one tell me precisely where my Joshua Lister
ancestor and his family is buried? It is also possible he may have been buried in an unmarked grave. Also, does any Lister family historian/researcher know where my Joshua Lister's farm(s) were located around Odessa, Delaware and in Caroline County, Maryland?

Dover DE program to feature RevoWar expert

On Monday, February 18, the Central Delmarva Revolutionary Round Table welcomes Dr. Jude M. Pfister at Sorrentino’s Restaurant. This is at 518 South Bay Shore Road, Dover (on the west side of 113, where it divides from route 13).

At 6:00 p.m. is a self-treat, optional dinner. Dr. Pfister will speak about 7:00 on History, Myth, Memory, and the Pennsylvania Line. The Continental Army spent the winters of 1776-1777 and 1779-1780 around Morristown, New Jersey. The first mass immunization against smallpox was there in 1777, and the 1779-1780 winter was the severest of the 18th century. These two facts sharply contrast with the almost limitless myths and lore that permeate the Morristown story. Dr. Pfister wrote:

"I am particularly interested in how memory played a part in the development of the Morristown National Historical Park. Morristown was the first historical park in the National Park system and on March 2, 2008, the park will celebrate its 75th anniversary . . . I will provide a brief overview of the two (actually three) encampments and then talk about the problems with folklore in the context of the PA line placement. Early in 2007 we completed work on an extensive archaeological assessment of the PA line area and found that the site was not where the legend had placed it. "

After graduating from Delaware State University with a B.A. in History (1991), Jude earned his M.A. from Washington College (1993) and his Ph.D. from Drew University (2007). He has worked as a curator and historian for the National Park Service since 1993. He currently is Chief of Cultural Resources at the Morristown National Historical Park where he oversees the museum, library, and archival programs.

Thanks to Dr. Jack Gardner for the above description. If readers can come to Dover earlier, and want to research at the Del. Archives, I could meet you there.

Information that was included in the publication "New Light on Old Barratt's", about Barratt's Chapel, has me wondering if this family may have additional information on Lydia Barratt, the wife of Matthew Patton Sr., who was also a daugher of Philip Barratt. Mrs. Roop referred to her as "Aunt Lydia" and was to have been her great-great niece. I am a direct descendant of Lydia & Matthew and I am wondering if this Roop family may have any more old stories about her life other than the one published in the book. If any one knows how I might contact this family it would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Patricia Patton Taylor
In researching the earliest RATLEDGE in Kent Co., DE reference found connecting Jonas PASWATERS to Edward RATLEDGE. Possibly coming from Nanticoke Hundred in old Somerset later Sussex Co. Questions: Who were the PASWATER orphans, in care of Edward RATLEDGE IN 1673? Why would John RATLEDGE, son of Edward, have a 1732 survey done on his land "Stone Law" in order to protect it from PASWATERS & BLACKSHARE? Anyone with suggestions/answers invited to respond.

I'm looking for someone to do some research at the Archives for me. It involves locating Freeland's Branch on an old map, which I know they have there. My guess is that Freeland's Branch is a branch of St. Jones, but I'm not certain. It was in Dover Hundred as of 1742, when Maskell Clark sold to William Ware part of a tract called Maskell's Choice near Freeland's Branch. This Branch is mentioned in other records as well.

Cemetery near Dover Air Force Base

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone could possibly help me with information regarding a small cemetery located on Rt. 9 south behind (East of) Dover Air Base. It is located a short distance south of Little Creek, Delaware. It is surrounded by chain link fence and the gate is locked. I am assuming it is part of government property.
I am interested in the names of the persons buried there. There is 5 grave markers visable from the road.

I am also looking for my Moor/Moore ancestor's family cemetery that is listed in the Dill's books as being at the end of rd. #335 north of Little Creek Delaware. I had tried to find its location without success while vacationing in Delaware last week.

I would surely appreciate any help with either query.

Sincerely, Ernest
ehwilson65@aol.com
Can find nothing on Aaron P. Morris' parents and/or siblings, and wonder if the Sampson Morris on the 1800 census of Kent County, could have been a relative. My wife is the gr-granddaughter of Aaron & Rebecca Morris. Any information would be most helpful. Thank you, Dennis.

By 1770 he was on the tax lists of Caswell County in North Carolina. But I just heard that two of his children (Agness or Annis Trickey b. 23 Dec. 1767, and Elizabeth Trickey b. 25 Nov. 1774) were born in Kent County, DE. Anyone know of any Trickeys born in Delaware?

Al

POW/MIA Korean War, Kent Co. PERNELL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Kent County, Delaware as his home of record.

Soldier: JAMES PHILLIP PERNELL
Born: October 24, 1931, Black
Date of loss: Feb. 14, 1951, Prisoner of War (POW)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are two families in Delaware that have not been located. There is one family from Kent County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Help! I've reached a genealogy brick wall! I've been trying for years to research my Copes ancestry, with little success, due to lack of records. I need any information on the Copes family of Delaware. My grandfather was Walter Copes, born in Marshalton, DE in 1910. His father was George Washington Copes, born in Delaware in October 1880. George's parents are Joseph Copes and Sara Roach Copes, both born in Delaware. George Copes married Margaret Ellen Dillon, born in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania in 1891. Her parents were Edward Dillon and Hannah Burns. This is all I know. I would like any information on the families of Joseph Copes and Sara Roach as possible. All I know so far is that in the 1900 census, George Copes, age 18, is living in Kent County, Delaware with his aunt and uncle. Please help! Also, any information on Edward Dillon and Hannah Burns would also be appreciated. Thank You!

I am interested in the James F. Davis family of Kent County Delaware. James was born in Kent County in 1848 and in 1871 married Frances A. Turner of Smyrna, Delaware.
They had two children: William Turner Davis, born 1873 and Anna Burnett Davis, born 1872. William became a doctor and married Elizabeth Carrow. Does anyone know anything about William and Elizabeth? He eventually practiced Medicine in Pennsylvania.

My name is George D. Dill. I have a biography that says that my gg grand father, Benjamin Dill came from Kent Co., Delaware to Kentucky when he was young (about 1780 + - 10 years). I have obtained some information from the Delaware Archives and have some information on the Dill families back to John and Sarah Dill who married in 1702. However, I do not have any information as to who Benjamin Dill's parents were. I will be happy to share my information with you. I would be happy to receive any documents or wills that say who the children are of the various Dill families.

My family was looking to move to the Delaware area, we are having a hard time trying to find jobs, and a nice area to live in. We are looking at several different new home sites, but nothing have really caught our eye. We are looking to purchase 2 homes. I work for the school district in the area I live in, as a case manager for homeless children. If anyone has any suggestions please send me an email.
Thanks

All are buried in and around that area. I have a bit of information and if these people sound like your family, I will review what I have and sent it to you.
