Grateful thanks for putting a human face, as it were, on the census takers. It's all too easy for me to get impatient when I don't see what I expect or want to see in the census, and starting flinging cups and spoons and bad words around.

Of course, I've seen my share of census surprises, e.g., the Manhattan census taker whose ears were probably not prepared for a Charleston (SC) drawl and transcribed "Howard" as "Hubbard". I looked at that one for a very long time--years, in fact--until the reality of another column entry hit me: it said "mother-in-law" and then I knew who she was and what the name should have been.

Ah, the bumps along the road...
