My interest is the the birth record of Mary E. CURRAN Carley, born abt. 1858 in D.C., died 16 Dec 1912 at age 54, according to her D.C. death certificate. She is interred at Mt. Olivet – headstone photo attached. I have a genealogical hunch her parents may be interred at Holy Rood. The Curran family that Mary E. Curran belonged to has eluded me for years. I’m following researcher David O’Connor’s lead, and planning a trip to Georgetown’s Lauinger Library. Any information on how to proceed is appreciated.
I am searching for information surrounding the death of my grandfather, Robert Clifton Newell, born 1 Aug, 1910, and died sometime in December 1975, according to the Social Security Death Index. His last known address was in the Langdon area of DC 20018.

Robert C. Newell had been homeless for several years prior to 1975 and he was known to have frequently stayed at the Salvation Army shelters for the homeless. Several Newell family members think that he left the District of Columbia boundaries during his final days, and he may have died in the Virginia suburbs south of DC.

Please contact me if you have any information regarding Robert C. Newell. Thank you very much.

IN DESPERATE SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS OF IOLA GRAHAM DHUE HARDING - Washington, D.C.

Hello,
I am desperate need to locate the surviving children of Iola Graham Dhue (SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: 579-26-9825) (Born: Sept. 11, 1922 Durham, N.C. - Feb. 1984 Arlington, VA.) who married Chuck Harding in 1947 in Washington, D.C.
I do not know his real first name but guessing it was Charles...I do not know of anyone else who has a nick-name Chuck that isn't really named Charles...Do you?

Anyways they have 2 children. Larry Harding & (J)(G)erry Lee Harding. They are Boy & girl twins born around 1948-1950 in Washington, D.C. They should both still be alive and in the Washington, D.C. area. Iola Graham Dhue Harding moved to Washington, D.C. in 1932 from her hometown Durham, N.C., which is where I am at. Iola Graham Dhue Harding died in February, 1984 (Don't know what day) and last lived in Arlington, Virginia.(ZIP code 22204) Washington, D.C. probably issued her death certificate.
I don't know if her husband, Chuck Harding is still living or even if he at one point he divorced Iola Graham Dhue Harding.(DIVORCE LICENCE WOULD BE SO VERY HELPFUL) But one thing is for sure Gerry Lee Harding (girl) and Larry Harding are out there and around 60 years of age and are most likely in the D.C. metropolitan area. Iola Graham Dhue Harding family owned "Dhue Plumbing" in Washington, D.C., lastly known until 1947. If someone could obtain a marriage certificate for Iola & Chuck, to find his real name and a death certificate for Iola, birth certificate for Larry Harding & Jerry Lee Harding, obituaries.....ANYTHING, would be of massive appreciation to me and my family.

Thank you so much for reading this and I hope YOU can be the one to help MY family.

,Clint E.
Isabella T. Hopkins, newspaper city directories? obit? will?

Hello all, I'm trying to determine whether an ancestor died in D.C. but I haven't done much genealogy work in the district and don't know where to look. Ideally I'd like to find a death notice for Isabella T. Hopkins to confirm that she died there, sometime between 1902-1904. If that's not possible, a city directory for 1900-1904 would be great too. I just want to get some kind of confirmation that she was there during that time before ordering the a death record search for her. Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Obituary Lookup - Veva V. Hadley

Hi I am searching for an obituary on a couisin of mine named Veva V. Hadley. She was born 11 September 1935 in
Cincinnati, Ohio to Harlan Vanvactor Hadley (b. 17 Mar 1907
in Danville, Indiana) and Winnie Welborn (b. 1913 in Royse City, Texas). I've learned so far that she lived with her parents in Detroit, Michigan from 1936 until 1941, then in Birmingham, Michigan beginning in 1941. At one point her parents divorce and she moves with her father Harlan to the Distict of Columbia. He shows up on a New York Passenger List in 1949 with Washington, DC as his residence. Also, according to the SSDI, Veva died 6 January 1992 and her Social Security was issued in Washington, DC. Where would I need to turn to locate an obituary?
Thanks, Gus
The woman that died in 1907 is buried at Glenwood under a stone for the Methodist Home. I have not been able to find these two individuals in the DC Census for 1900 or 1910. Does anyone know what was located at the address 601 M St NW in the early 1900's? Today there is a church related facility there.

Seeking an obituary for both Ed and Orul Towey Wilkes.

This is what I know:

Ed joined the US Navy as a young man and was stationed in Nicaragua where he was a hospital orderly and then an X-Ray technician. After he was discharged from the Navy, he married and settled in the Washington D.C. area. He and his wife were both civil service workers. Upon retiring, Ed Wilkes and his wife Orul traveled extensively in Mexico after leaving the United States, and settled in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico in the early 1970’s. Ed died in 1997, in Mexico.

Orul was born in Minnesota to Patrick and Margaret Towey, in 1904. She later lived with her sister Dorothy Titus in the state of Washington and attended the University of Washington in Seattle. Orul died in Mexico in March 1985.

I dont have access to census records and was wondering if someone could tell me the first name of Josephine's husband and who the parents of Francis and Josephine are.
I found a land record that states an ancestor of mine, Isabella Hopkins, was from Washington D.C. She died in either 1903 or 1904 according to the record but I've been unable to find her in the Federal Census for 1900. I'd really like to be able to find out whether she died there so that I can find her will and probate. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to find this information? Thanks!

Where is the best place to do the lookups?

Washingtonpost.com looks like it only goes back to the 1970's.

Thanks

Jeff

Mary O'CONNELL, died 1897 at Gov't Hosp for Insane, buried Mt. Olivet Cem

Background info:

My gg-grandmother Ellen O'CONNELL and her two unmarried sons, William and Thomas, are buried in Mt. Olivet Cem. There is a fourth person buried there, Mary O'CONNELL. I have no idea who she is so I sent for her death certificate which just came in the mail today. There was no "Aha!" pieces of info on it that made everything clear (which was what I was secretly hoping for.)

Here's the info it reported:

Mary O'CONNELL, white, age 45, died May 10, 1897 at the Government Hospital for the Insane of "acute mania". She entered the hosp on April 21, 1897 and was there for 7 weeks, until her death. She was buried May 13, 1897, ten years prior to my gg-grandmother Ellen and her son Thomas (both buried in 1907) but 14 years after son William (buried Jan 29, 1883).

Her home address was 332 "B" Street SW in Washington (That's now part of Fort Lesley MacNair, right?). Her occupation was "tailoress" and her birthplace was "England" (though I suspect Ireland). She is listed as "Married" but no husband's name is given (drat!). She resided for "several years" in the District of Columbia. It gives her date of burial, the undertaker's name and address and the hospital doctor signed it. That's it.

I would like to find out this woman's connection to my family. I think a good start would be to find out her husband's name--he might be a younger sibling of my gg grandfather. Where can I look for his name, given I only have an address? The undertaker is not likely to still be in business (Wm. H. Scott, 615 Pa. Ave SE), and I've checked the 1880 US Census (no luck).

Given her address, is it likely that her husband was in the military, stationed at the Washington Arsenal/Barracks? I'm grasping at straws here...

Thank you,
Carol Hokana

Hello, looking for the name of a cemetery in south east Washington D.C. that I believe was on the river or on a hill looking over to the river- Anacosta I think. My grandmother was buried there about 1948. Her name would be Hazel Mae BAUGHMAN NEEDHAM. I remember going to the cemetery as a child with my mother, who is now deceased. Looking for the exact date when grandmother died and exactly where she was buried.

Thank you in advance for anyone familiar with the area. I have been out of the F.C. area for almost 40 years and my memory is a bit rusty. Jackie in Idaho

Trying hard to find any info or family connections:

Joseph G. HOLROYD, b. 1821, Washington D.C.; d. abt. 1885, Illinois.

We believe that Joseph may be the illegitimate son of a Sarah HOLROYD, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1820 "with child" from England. Sarah is the daughter of John HOLROYD, Yorkshire, England. John's nephew, Joseph HOLROYD, also immigrated to America around 1815, and I believe his family ended up in Virginia.

Joseph G. HOLROYD moved west at a young age and ended up in Illinois, where he married Emmit SHOEMAKER (b. 30 Jan 1821, Terre Haute, IN) on 10 May 1843 in Carroll County, Illinois. I have found no family members who moved west with him. It is likely that his mother married after arriving in America.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Karyn

Need to find burial site for Civil War Vet who died in DC Govt Hospital

From the Civil War Pension File: On letterhead of the “Government Hospital for the Insane, Washington, DC" it states that George Baucherich, late of Co. E, 18th Penna. Volunteer Infantry, died in this hospital on April 4th, 1904.

The family story was that George was buried in Arlington Cemetery. However, a phone call to Arlington with very helpful staff found no George. George's name is also found as "George Bachoritch," as the family eventually adopted this spelling, but he enlisted as George Baucherich and so his pension documents are found under that name.

A request for a death certificate to the District of Columbia vital statistics office with the spelling of George Baucherich with the death date of April 4, 1904 was unsuccessful. This spelling was used as it is the same as the letter noting the death from the Government Hospital.

George is on the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses for Marshall County, Kansas. In 1860 he lived in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. I have been unable to find him on the 1900 census. He was originally from Germany.

According to family stories he was so grief stricken after the death of his wife in 1886 he sent his younger sons to live with relatives. No one knows what happened between 1886 and 1890.

In Oct 1890 he was in the Veteran's Home in Topeka, Kansas. In 1891 he was transferred to the Western Branch, National Home for D.V.S. in Washington, D.C. In July 1892, he was discharged from the home in D.C. He must have been readmitted, because in June 1896, he was transferred from D.C. back to Topeka, Kansas. Sometime between 1896 and his death he was transferred back to D.C. where he died and the letter regarding his death from the Government Hospital for the Insane was submitted to his pension file to terminate his pension.

It does not seem likely that his body was shipped back to Kansas in 1904. It seems more likely he was buried in the D.C. area.

Richard Gaines Obituary

Gaines, Richard
Richard Gaines – Pueblo Colorado Weekly Chieftain – September 11, 1879 – Death of Mr. Richard Gaines – The news of the death of Mr. Richard Gaines, at his home in this city, says the Colorado Springs Gazette, will be received with profound sorrow by a large circle of personal friends. Mr. Gaines had been suffering during the summer from a billious attack, but seemed of late to be recovering his usual degree of health, but he suffered a relapse, and at half past four Sunday afternoon expired, after an illness of about sixteen hours. Mr. Gaines was born in Georgetown, District of Columbia, on the 24th of September, 1810. When he was still an infant his parents removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he passed his boyhood and grew up to manhood. Being a young man of strong character, he thoroughly imbibed the liberal principals of William Lloyd Garrison and other abolitionists and of course took an active part in opposing the cruel and unjust fugitive slave law, and, in conjunction with many other Ohio abolitionists, assisted many a poor, hunted slave on to Canada and freedom. About 1854, Mr. Gaines removed with his family to Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa. In that young growing state he soon found a wide field for the exercise of his liberal principles and also for his keen intelligence and ability in organizing and managing affairs of public importance. He took a prominent place among the leading men of the state, and contributed not a little to the success of some of her home institutions. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the agricultural college, located at Ames, now a flourishing college of upwards of four hundred students, was the first superintendent of the college farm and during his superintendency planned and directed the erection of the brick farm house and the barns and out-buildings, and by his own personal efforts in opposition to the opinions of his fellow trustees secured through the influence of the United States senator from southern Iowa, the magnificent appropriation of lands which to-day brings to that institution the handsome revenue which makes it almost if not quite sustaining. Mr. Gaines, thinking he would find a better and wider field for the business pursuits of his family, came to Colorado, arriving in El Paso county in May, 1870. He settled on the Fountain, six miles below Colorado Springs, and turned his attention to cattle raising, and took but a small part in the politics of the state outside of his own county. He was known by all his acquaintances as a close thinker, a man of integrity, and a firm advocate of temperance. By these fine qualities of heart and mind, he secured the friendship of hosts of people throughout the state. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and reached a high standing in that society, being a Royal Arch Mason in good standing.
Memorial Wall

Can i ask a favor of someone who will be going to the WWII Memorial Wall? My Uncle James W. Bishop died in a plane crash Feb 26, 1943. He is listed on the Wall. Could someone take a picture of his name on the wall and email me the copy? I have no pictures of him. My mother never even had the chance to meet her half brother as her father and James mother were estranged. Grandpa was not even allowed to attend the funeral of his own son. So if someone, if possible, can take a picture of his name on the wall, i'd appreciate it. James was 2nd Lt James W. Bishop. If they have deaths by dates he might be under March 1943.
