The images are online first, then a Volunteer transcribes what they see on the stone for the database. When we have time we go back and make corrections where necessary. The photos are there to back up the database. So if the DB is wrong you should be able to see the right info on the stone. The database is a finding aid. We have all but one cemetery in Alachua County Photographed. We are working on editing the images of the ones that are not online to place them online.

I have seen a few post mentioning our online records. Our online records grow everyday, both in quanity and ability to search what we have online. We have deeds that date back to the 1820s, marriages that date back to 1837, Commission Minutes that date back to 1846, mortgages that date back to 1847 (previous mortgages were in the deed Books), Will Records that date back to 1840. There are also other books that don't fit the categories above online. All online records are free. The Florida Supreme Court created an Order about 9 years ago that made us remove all Court files no matter how old from the website. There is an online index. With an email you can order these records and pay the state mandated charge via credit card over the phone and receive either paper copies via snail mail or PDF files via email or download from our server if they are too large for email.
I personally have Hodge(William 1810, Alford 1859), Harris (Jacob Evander 1875, Mary 1912) and Fowler (Nathaniel 1820, Civel 1848) Ancestors in Alachua County as early as 1859. Any Cousins out there?
Jim
Jim Powell Jr
Wizard of AR
http://www.wizardofar.org/
http://www.facebook.com/wizardofar
Ancient Records Coordinator
Alachua County Clerk of Court
http://www.alachuaclerk.org/archive
http://www.facebook.com/ACARVol
BTW...
The Alachua County Library District has an obituary index and sends copies from newspaper microfilm for free. His obituary might say where he was going to be buried. They do sometimes say "Interment will be at ..." You might also request his wife's.

aref@aclib.us

I assume you're talking about the one who was married to Nancy Williams and lived in Georgia, where his two sons were born, before moving to Florida.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFHD-49J

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pendarvisi...

Sharon

I see two Jeptha Knights in Alachua County: one born between 1815 and 1820 in Georgia, who married Mary Mariah Watson
http://www.alachuaclerk.org/archive/AncientJ/FrontPage.cfm?B...=

and one born in Dec 1886 in Florida, the son of Lemuel and Ada.

The will of George Knight (http://www.alachuaclerk.org/archive/AncientJ/FrontPage.cfm?D...) leaves much of his estate to his nephew Jeptha for the use and benefit of Jeptha's six children: David Levy Knight, George Montgomery Knight, Thomas Jasper Knight, Margaret Frances Knight, Julia Eliza Knight, and Lemuel Lafayette Knight.

This is apparently the George Knight born in 1800 in Georgia who in the 1850 census was living in Alachua County with Jeptha Knight born in 1819 in Georgia, his wife Eliza, and four of the six children named in the will.

I see that Britton died in Alachua County in 1842, and his will isn't available online but can be requested from the clerk's office for $1 per page. Someone local can go in and take pictures (or use a handheld scanner, as I do).

I hope that helps. If you can provide any additional information, I might be able to find more.

Sharon

The Alachua County Library District has an obituary index and sends them free. However, I found this one on Newsbank:

James E. Hilmar Sr.

Gainesville Sun, The (FL) - Tuesday, December 24, 1996

Retired Col. James E. Hilmar Sr. of Gainesville died Saturday at his home. He was 74.

Mr. Hilmar was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War who retired after 33 years. He received the Distinguis Service Cross, two Bronze Stars, two Air Medals, the double Combat Infantry Badge and several foreign decorations and awards.

He was born in Wilson, Pa., and moved to Gainesville in 1975. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, the Retired Officers Association and Heritage Links Country Club.

Mr. Hilmar attended St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Mission Board and as chairman of the building committee.

Survivors include his wife, Nan Hilmar of Gainesville; a daughter, Martha H. Reilly of Alachua; a son, James E. Hilmar Jr. of Seattle, and two sisters, Betty Bentley of Atlanta and Florence Davis of Virginia Beach, Va.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to St. Joseph's Building Fund.

Section: News
Record Number: 122496obhilmar243207669
Copyright 1996, 2009, The Gainesville Sun
There aren't that many funeral homes in the Gainesville area. I would suggest using Google to get their names and phone numbers, and calling them to see if they handled your family member's funeral.

Likewise, check with some of the larger cemeteries: e.g., Forest Meadows, Evergreen.

Finally, Jim Powell and a wonderful group of volunteers are working hard at surveying all of the cemeteries in Alachua County. Check out his website: http://wizardofar.org/

Good luck!

Janet

Gainesville Sun, The (FL) - October 1, 2004
Deceased Name: Marjorie Heath Bingham
*Marjorie Heath Bingham, a former teacher and longtime resident of Gainesville, died Monday at her home in The Village. She was 101.

Mrs. Bingham was born in Richmond, Mich., and learned to drive at age 12, voluntarily surrendering her driver's license at 94. She began teaching at 19, and retired in 1974.

She earned her teacher's certification at State Teacher's College in Ypsilanti, Mich., and received a bachelor's degree at Wayne State University while teaching health and physical education at nearby Royal Oak High School.

She earned a master's degree from Columbia University Teacher's College, where she also did work on a Ph.D. After her marriage, she took time off from her career to raise a family.

She moved to Gainesville in 1949, where her husband joined the University of Florida faculty, and resumed her career at J.J. Finley Elementary, where she taught from 1950 to 1959. In 1960, she became North Central Florida's first television science teacher. WUFT-TV broadcast her classes into seven counties for several years.

She and her family moved to India in 1962, spending the next few years working in science education and learning about Indian society and culture.

After returning to Gainesville, she taught fifth grade at Terwilliger Elementary for five years, then became a founding teacher at Martha Manson Academy, where she worked until her retirement.

She was a member of many organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma national teacher's honorary society, Pen Women, Gainesville Rose Society, University Woman's Club and Gainesville Woman's Club.

I am looking for ANY Knight descendants from Alachua County. Everyone has hit a brick wall when they get to Jeptha. Was he related to George, Elias & Britton Knight? I believe only a descendant of this Knight line may hold the answer. My belief is that maybe there's another Knight brother that we are not aware of who died, perhaps the mother died in birth? Who knows? That's why we need a true Jeptha Knight descendant to come forward. I am hoping that a male Knight descendant was passed down with a family bible or something that holds if not the answer than @ least a clue to the direction that we should go.

I have a lot of it digitized. Some has even been transcribed when it USED TO BE ONLINE before the Florida Supreme Court Order. There is no money involved in placing these already digitized records online. I just need to change a few flags in a database and redo a snippet of ColdFusion Code. We plan to digitize the rest of the records that we have, whether they are online only within the Court House or outside the Court House is the question. Right now the Florida Supreme Court Order prohibits us, as a Clerk of the Court's Office, from posting Court Records that are not "Official" Official Records online, even though they are PUBLIC records. All we need is the consent of the legislature or the Florida Supreme Court. If you want Ancient online records we are a pioneer and can and will do more. Maybe others will follow. Please sign our petition and help try to bring us back where we were 9 years ago plus some. http://signon.org/sign/allow-ancient-court-records.fb23?sour...
our website http://www.alachuaclerk.org/archive and our Volunteers meeting site http://www.facebook.com/AVARVol

Good Morning Everyone,

I have created a petition aimed at allowing our Ancient Court Records & Files back online. I thought it was worth a try. If you have time please add your signature. The more signatures that we can come up with the better our chances, so please share the petition anywhere that you think may lead to additional signatures. If you have already signed, "Thank You!"
http://signon.org/sign/allow-ancient-court-records.fb23?sour...

Thank You,
Jim

--
Jim Powell Jr
Wizard of AR
http://www.wizardofar.org/
http://www.facebook.com/wizardofar
Ancient Records Coordinator
Alachua County Clerk of Court
http://www.alachuaclerk.org/archive
http://www.facebook.com/ACARVol

Thanks very much, Paige. And my apologies for the delay in responding; I didn't get notification you'd replied.

I've since found information that Joan HORN m. Joseph Theodore LINZMAIER. He was b. 1933/4 in Wisconsin. I've contacted family tree owners who note this marriage but have yet to get a reply.

I don't know which person was Joan's last husband, although I suspect it was KLICKO. Even if she hadn't changed her name with Social Security, the Florida death record (I've now located it and will be ordering) would surely reflect her current surname at date of death, as given by the informant.

Ever onward!

Maybe someone in the area can come up w/ an obit. You might also consider requesting a death certificate from The State of Florida, I believe they about $8.00 now. The informant, if close, would give parent's names, birth place. Also on there is place of burial, if in Florida.

If I come up with anything in a further search, I will let you know.
Good Hunting

Hello:

Trying to locate what became of my aunt, Gertrude HATHAWAY (2 May 1902 IL - ?) and recently found she m. Fletcher Harrison "Harry" HORN 13 Oct 1933 Adams County, Indiana. Both are noted as residents of Detroit.

The 1940 Detroit census shows Gertrude HORNE (familysearch.org) or HERNE (ancestry.com) b. 1902 IL with child Joan, 6, b. Michigan.

I've believe this Joan to be Joan Gertrude KLICKO (19 Jan 1934 MI - 27 Dec 1976 Alachua County).

Am hoping to determine 1) Joan KLICKO was the daughter in the 1940 Detroit census; 2) if the census Gertrude, mother of Joan, might have been my aunt.

Any ideas or information very much appreciated.

You might want to contact Micanopy Town Hall 352-466-3741 for cemetery records as they are the ones to contact for any burials. Know from experience that some markers in the very old section of the Micanopy Cemetery are missing as this has happened to our Great Uncle's & one of his children's markers from their gravesites. Another possible source is the Micanopy Historical Museum & Archives 352-466-3200.
