Classification: Biography
Surnames: PEARSON, EDERINGTON, Nevitt, SNOW, DRIER
Chinsegut Hill, was originally settled by Col Byrd Pearson, through the Armed Occupation Act on Aug 4, 1842. In 1852 Francis (Frank) Ederington migrated to Florida from Fairfield County SC and purchased the property from Pearson. Ederington made the 450 mile trip from SC, by mule and horse team together with his wife, Precious Ann Nevitt and four daughters. The hill was known as " Mt. Airy" at this time and on this hill six more children were born.

One of the Ederington girls Charolette Elizabeth, married Dr. Joseph Russell Snow, for whom the hill was later renamed.   Frank Ederington died in 1866. After the turn of the century "Snow Hill" was sold to Col. Raymond Robbins, who renamed the hill "Chinsegut Hill" . Col Robbins and his wife Margaret Drier, deeded the entire hill consisting of 2080 acres to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture in perpetuity for the maintenance of a wild life refuge, forest reserve and experiment station. Col Robbins died in 1954 and he and his wife are buried on the hill.

Some Ederingtons and Snows are also buried in a private cemetery on the hill. This hill is located 4 miles north of Brooksville and is one of the highest hills in Hernando County.

Joseph Russell Snow came to Hernando County from Georgetown County SC. He was born 1842 and died in 1908. We know he served part of the civil war in SC . His name also comes up in the Book of Fl Soldiers under A Fl regiment. We know his brother did serve in Fl so it is possible he enlisted in a Fl unit after fulfilling an enlistment in SC.

Another thing he inherited Mt Airy. So he had to have been married to Charolette prior to 1866, when her father died.
