This photo appeared in The Nashville Herald on September 17, 1936 under the headline: "Given Election Victory Ride Here Last Thursday". The people on the extreme left and right ends were cropped out of the photo as it appeared in the paper.
The cutline:
The boys had fun over results of the election last Thursday afternoon. Above is shown Mark Sutton, a Talmadge support, just before riding Howell Giddens, a Russell supporter, to the Georgia & Florida depot and back in a push cart, the fulfillment of an agreement between the two prior to the election. Seated in teh cart is Mr. Giddens, while from left to right are Reuben Sumner, Mayor J.V. Talley, Mark Sutton, (the loser), Night Police J.C. Gay, Chief of Police J.B. Frost and Deputy Sheriff J. Wesley Griner. Picutre by Pat Sullivan, local photographer.
---
It is interesting to note that this picture was taken on the square at the corner of Marion and Davis. The train depot is about a half mile east, so that was a lot of pushing the cart to fulfill that bet.

Maybe no one was buried while that was Lowndes.
Found these at georgia.gov;
Lanier Co Incorporated: August 7, 1920
Berrien Co Incorporated: February 25, 1856

Thanks very much for the link, BR. I found a series of historic maps showing the shrinkage of Berrien Co and a map showing the position of Empire. I think that was Lowndes until 1856 and I can come close to the date it became Lanier.
Dean

My g-grandparents(JHP & Chloe Johnson) lived in and raised their family in Ray City. The following excert is from "Ray City Homecoming, July 3, 1976".

A business which contributed much to the new town of Ray City ws the Luckie Lumber Company. It was a huge operation ran by J.F. Luckie and located about one mile north of town on the rail line. In fact there was a whistle stop called by the name Luckie. The company, founded in 1909, was sold to L.J. Clements and Sons in 1916 and became known as Clements Lumber Company. It was operated by them until 1923 at which time it was acquired by the Jackson Brothers Lumber Company and subsequently burned in 1926.
At the height of the mill's operation tram railroads were built all over the area and were used for hauling logs to the mill where they were sawed into lumber. At the site of the mill were located quarters sufficient to house hundreds of employees and their families. Certainly such a payroll was quite a boost the the new town's economy.

Ron,
Here is the text of an article from the Feb 16, 1923 Nashville Herald. I'm interested in researching the history of Ray City in general. As you say, the Clements were an important part of that history. I'd be happy to share what I have found on the Clements if you'd like to collaborate.

CLEMENTS LBR. COMPANY SOLD OUT AT RAY CITY

Nashville Herald, February 16, 1923

The Clements Lumber Company one largest and oldest lumber concerns in this section of the state, was sold at Ray City last week by the Clements Brothers to Jackson Brothers, formerly of Tallapoosa, Georgia.

The Clements Lumber Company has been doing business in Ray City for twelve years, it was stated by the present owners. The Jackson Brothers are mill men of considerable experience. They were formerly in the cotton mill business.

They are said to have paid $100,000 and will assume charge of the plant at once.

The new owners have bought the Lon Fender timber tract, which Mr. Fender bought more than a year ago from the Sirmans estate. It is one of the finest timber tracts in this section of the state. This with the other timber insight affords at least five years running yet, and there is more to be had, it is said, that will run them ten years.

The Clements Brothers have not decided yet what they will do in the future.

I know this page is more family tree oriented than local history oriented, but the Berrien Historical Foundation is going to host a display of pictures of the Berrien Press Calendar Girls from since the newspaper's founding in 1959 to now. The display, covering 50 years, will open later this year at the Perry Memorial Library in Nashville.

Anyone who has their original picture is asked to contact The Berrien Press at 229-686-3523 to make arrangements for it to be scanned. We have many of the originals from 1959-1975, 1999-2003, and 2007-present. Yet we need pictures from the other time frames. All pictures have been scanned from yearbooks, but it is hoped to have the original to replace the yearbook photo because of picture quality issues.

Also, anyone who can identify Calendar Girls by name and month from 1959-1963 is also asked to please share that information. Berrien High yearbooks from that time period did not identify the girls by either name or by month, so we need the public's help.

With deep appreciation,

Skeeter Parker
Berrien Historical Foundation

The WILLIS DEMPSEY SULLIVAN is incorrect. This son, born in 5 Dec 1845, was 1st child of Dempsey Rite Willis (1825-1917) and Caroline Elizabeth Conger; whether they were married or not, there is no documentation. However, the child's name was DEMPSEY RIGHT WILLIS, and he is buried at the Turner Primitive Church cemetery in Tift County, GA, near the Alapaha River at the Ferry Lake Road at Tift-Irwin county line.

Dempsey Right Willis (1845-1925) death certificate does NOT show name of father and does not show name of mother. And any documentation in the county to prove any of this has been destroyed in a much earlier fire.

Tom Benefield

Just found this post. If the Pate Hand you refer to lived in Nashville,Ga, and Charlotte Dampier his wife, was my great-uncle Pate Hand. The parents were James Hand and Marjorie Wilcox Hand. My paternal grandmother was Queen Elizabeth Hand who married a Morgan James Taylor.

If this is the same person, I have a wealth of info on this family.

Curtis P. Taylor
singer_one@yahoo.com

I stumbled across your post while researching my Fulford family. This William W. Fulford was my GG-Grandfather and was apparently killed in the Civil War in Knoxille, TN. Did you ever find out anymore about the Fulford-Kelly connection? Was Martha Kelly his mother? William W.'s grandson, William Warren Fulford (son of John Wesley Fulford)of Lax GA, was my Grandfather. Any information you may have on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Ron Yates, If the map you posted for New Ramah Primitive Baptist Church is the one you meant to post I think you are in error...Beaver Dam and New Ramah are not the same. I have relatives buried in both and have a good many pictures of the graves there. Please contact me at ababbs@aol.com and I will share what I know. BTW I am a Yates descendant.
anne
