Lynch Family of Burke County and Orangeburg, SC.

Hello,

Below is the obit of Effie E. Lynch Lamb. She was the daughter of Jacob M. Lynch and Hariett (Hattie) Drawdy Lynch. She had a sister, Eliza (Lizza) Bell Lynch who was married to Joseph Elmore Frazier of Girard, Georgia. Eliza would be my great great grandmother. I have quite a few questions on this family.

In the 1910, Burke Ga, Militia District 68, Eliza is listed with her husband Elmore at the age of 17 and a daughter in the household named Beulah, 8 months.

She doesnt appear in the census after the 1910 census.

Im thinking she may have died from complications shortly after having Mary L. who was 8 months in the 1910 census. but when and were is she burried? Could she had left the family and lived her life elsewhere? Eliza Bell was born in Edisto, Orangeburge, South Carolina. Could she be placed at her homeplace in Orangeburg, SC for her buriel? I have no clue. Im at a dead end with Eliza (Lizza) Bell Lynch.

In the 1920 census has her husband and other children and Elmore Mother living in the household.
1920, Girard, Ga, Burke
Jospeh E. Frazier, age 36 ( Joseph Elmore)
Mary E. Frazier, Mother, age 64 (Widowed)
Jessie M. Frazier (Daughter), age 9 (Jessie Mae)
Minnie C. Frazier, age 6 (Minnie Corine)
Joseph E. Frazier ( Joseph Elmore, Jr, (Bubba))
Mary L. Frazier, age 3 months (Mary Lee)
Arthur Story, age 36 Boarder

Does anyone have more information on this family? My grandmother was Jessie Mae Frazier, who was born on 7-13-1911 and who married John William Brookins. On her death certificate list her father as J. M. Lynch and her mother as Hattie Drawdy.
I have found Jacob and Hattie living in the 1900 Census, Edisto, Orangeburg, SC
Jacob, born about 1867, age 33
Harriett L., Wife, born about 1871 age 29
Effie E., Daughter,born about 1891, age 9
Eliza B., Daughter, born about 1894, age 6
Dora, Daughter, born about 1896, age 4

Another question I have is when reading Effie Lynch Lamb Obit it list a son name H. Fletcher Smith, of Summertime, Georgia. Was she married before she married who I believe was Henry Lamb? Would appreciate any information on Eliza Bell (Lizza) Lynch. Especially were she is buried and when she died. Thanks so much.

OBIT OF EFFIE LYNCH LAMB:

Girard, Jan 20, Mrs. Effie Lynch Lamb, 63, died in the Burke County hospital today after a brief illness. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Corinth Christian Church by the Rev. E. R. Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Sanders, Waynesboro; son, H. Fletcher Smith of Summertown, Ga.; sister, Mrs. Annie Mae Carpenter, Richmond Hill, Ga.; brother, Luther Lynch of Waynesboro; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A native of Orangeburg, SC., the daughter of the late J. M. Lynch and Harriet Drawdy Lynch. She had resided in Girard for the past 25 years and was a member of the Baptist church. The Augusta Chronicle, dated, Thursday, 1-21-1954

Ansel Bush

I am helping one of my students research her family tree. She has used census records to trace back to Ansel Bush (born between 1861 and 1867) who was born in South Carolina, and died in Burke County, GA. Ansel is listed on the 1930 census (Burke County)as head of household. His wife is listed as Lady Bush. Their grandson, Elijah Bush is living next to them. We have Elijah's death certificate and we know that his father was Duff Bush. Duff is shown as Ansel's son on the 1900 census for Burke county. Is there any way to discover the death date for Ansel Bush? It was some date after 1930. We would like a copy of his death certificate, but we don't know what date to place on the request. Are there any listings for African American cemeteries in Burke County? Maybe we could get the information from a headstone.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
-Wendy

I am preparing for a small visit in South Georgia. Would anyone have a suggestion as if possibly they came across William Franklin Joyner/Joiner, born Dec 1, 1849, Perkins County, Georgia. Looking for a marriage date and any proof of children from Melviney Barefield. I decend from their eldest child Seaborn Charleston Joyner born Aug 31, 1877 in Burke County, Georgia. Any help in the location of this information will be a great help for us. We are about 4 hours away. We would be more than happy to share any finds with the family. Seaborn's siblings are as follow: Hattie, Mattie, Lenox, Rosa, James, Lloyd, Fannie, Reba, Franklin, Gussie, F Lee, Lula Mae and Jethro.

Seaborn Charleston Joyner married on 13 Jun 1897 in the home of the former Bessie Mae Murrow, daughter of Flavel and Mamie Murrow. We are missing many burial places as well of the fammily. Any information will be a blessing. Seaborn's children with Bessie are as follows: Sallie Maude, Clara Leona, Richard Lenox, Ruth Odessa, Harris Clark, Harris Clark, Gladys Lavonia,Rayford Alton, Mildred Mamie, Milton Flavel, Blanche Eleene, and Dorthy Eleese. Mildred was my great grandmother, she passed away in 1994. We never discovered the history of Mildred's husband Jesse White he died in his home in Keller Georgia in 1965 a few years before I was born. Any email information is also welcome.

Thanks for any direction to look while we in South Georgia.
I have been researching the Wells Family of Screven County, but have been told that some of the relatives of this family lived in Burke County. Have been searching for the parents of Alexander J. Wells, born in North Carolina, in 1826. I have been told of a Fredrick Wells that lived in Burke County and may have possibly been the father of the Alexander J. Wells that I have been researching. I have also been told that it was believed that Fredrick Wells may have been a brother of Jacob Wells, also born in NC. Jacob Wells married a Lydia Thompson Ennies. [The name Enneis was from a previous marriage] Any information that anyone has and willing to share will be greatly appreciated. I may be contact direct at: hamock@windstream.net. Please use Wells Family of Burke/Screven County as your subject. Thanks.

Green's Tavern - Green family

Hi, I am looking for any information regarding the early Green family of Burke County. I am particulerly interested in the John Green who owned and ran Green's Tavern. Here is what a fellow researcher told me about this man.

John Green(e) was an officer in the local Patriot forces of what was then the 'River District' of Burke County. And, he was also a JP of that local "Court of Conscience" that we know of from the Revolutionary War and post-war period of Burke County in that area between the Savannah River and Brier Creek. He ran a tavern near Burton's Ferry on the Savannah River (US 301 bridges). The "Court of Conscienc" often met at Green's Tavern.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for Information on Charles Turner.

I know very little about him and what I do know, I learned from documents in Bulloch County.

Charles had a least two children

Mary "Polly" Turner b. abt 1805
Daniel Turner b. abt. 1811.

Mary is my 3rd Great Grandmother. She married my 3rd Great Grandfather William B. Green in Bulloch County on March 30, 1829.

I found the following documents in Bulloch County which tells EVERYTHING I know about Charles Turner:

Nov. 2, 1829.

William Green, Lewis Green, and Jacob Nevill for $2200.00 bind William Green as guardian of Daniel Turner, orphan of Charles Turner. Wit: Ely Kennedy

Nov. 22, 1830

William Green, planter, for the affection he has for his brother-in-law, Daniel Turner, gives him his sorrel gelden and all his hogs. Wit: Edmund Brannen, David Williams. Rec: 28 Dec. 1830

And finally:

Jan. 1, 1831

William B. Green and Mary Green, formerly Mary Turner, his wife, to James W. Lewis and Lewis Green, for $500, all of Mary Green's interest in the estate of Charles Turner, of Burke Co., dec'd. Wit: Willis Wilkinson, Elisha Sumerlin, JIC, Rec: 3 May 1832.

So it looks like Charles died sometime in 1829. Any information on Charles Turner would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan Rackley, Jonas Chambers, Reubin Thompson & Rachel Chambers

I am researching the family of my 3great-grandmother Rachel Chambers b 1767 Md, died 1857 Emanuel Co Ga, who married Reubin Thompson b 1755 N.C., probably in Burke Co Ga.

I have found some land plats at Georgia's Virtual Vault and some other information from the Hollingsworth Surname Card Collection for Screven Co Ga. I believe that Rachel's father was probably Jonas Chambers whose plat for 750 acres in Burke Co was recorded in 1789. There are several other plats involving land that Jonas obtained in Burke Co and also in Screven Co. There are also plats and deed references for Reubin and for Rachel in both counties also.

I found a plat for Nathan Rackley that was witnessed by Jonas Chambers. I also found a Hollingsworth card that says Nathan Rackley was the heir of Pricilla Chambers in 1816 in Screven Co Ga. I think that Pricilla was Jonas Chambers' wife, and if so, who was their daughter who married Nathan Rackley? I found some postings at Rootsweb for a Nathan Rackley b 1777 in S.C. who married a Nancy Mary Chambers b. 1781 S.C.

How many Nathan Rackleys were there in early Burke Co? Is one of them this Nathan?

Also, I found several land deeds in Cecil Co Md for a Jonas Chambers in the 1760's and 1770's. He is not there in the 1790 census. I think this Jonas Chambers may be the one who shows up in 1789 in Burke Co Ga. Other Chambers names that I have found on the Burke Co plats include John, Robert, and Katharine Chambers.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for info on Andrew Graham, believed born NC abt 1790. He married Rachel Collins. They are in GA after 1827 or so and Andrew died in Decatur Co GA in 1847.

While doing some searching today, I found an Andrew Graham on the 1820 Rutherford Co NC census. There were also several Collins listed. I also found an Andrew Graham on the 1820 census for Burke Co GA, which is a bit earlier than we thought they had gone to GA. Is it possible that the timing of their move could cause them to be recorded on both census records?

I would appreciate any help with info about Andrew, Rachel and/or their origins.

According to my great-aunt Mary DEAN Hazen, "John D. DILLARD was born in Fairfield, South Carolina in 1803. He moved with his father John to Burke Co., Ga. in 1815. He then moved to Walton Co., Ga. in 1820, then to Muscogee Co., in about 1830. He was living in Walton Co. when Crawford DILLARD was born. He bought farm land N.E. of Ozark, AL in about 1850. He died in 1861 and is buried on his farm [the family farm in Dale Co. AL].
The John DILLARDs were landowners in Georgia."

We have not yet traced John Sr. back to a specific person in Fairfield Co. SC, nor identified his wife. Nor have I found any records from Burke Co., Georgia for this family.

John Sr.'s son John D DILLARD eventually married a Hilah WATSON. Were the WATSONs also in Burke Co., or did John and Hilah meet later?

Any information on this family in Burke Co. would be greatly appreciated!

Is anyone familiar with these Brookins?

HENRY BELL BROOKINS AND MRS. MARY BROOKINS

They are listed in my great granddaddys obit as his parents but yet I have search and search for any piece of infor on these people and get no where. My father told me that William D. (Judge is what everyone called him) was really born a BELL. He took his grandmother's name BROOKINS. The church that he is buried at has records that his mother is CAROLINE BROOKINS. I have also been told that his mother was working at someones plantation or home and she became pregnant by that man and was raised as a bastard child and was took in by the BROOKINS family, if so then who is HENRY BELL BROOKINS. None of this makes sense to me. Does anyone go to the Burke County Courthouse often and look up records? If so maybe you could keep me in mind if you run across anything on HENRY BELL BROOKINS. I would appreciate it. Any information on these two people I would appreciate very very much. I have search the Augusta Chronicle Archives, Ancestry.com and numerous other exploring places. I dont find anything.
Thanks, Darlene Brookins Brooks

This is my grandfathers obituary from the Augusta Chronicle.

William Dwellie (Judge) Brookins - Sardis, Georgia
age 82, died Wednesday 1-27-1965) at his residence near Alexander, Ga., after a brief illness. He was the son
of Henry Bell Brookins and Mrs. Mary Brookins, both natives of Burke county. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Sardis Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Flakes, Alexander, Ga., Mrs. Gaynell Hillis, Sardis, GA., two sons, Frank Parker Brookins, Alexander, GA., and Bonnie H. Brookins, Waynesboro, GA.

I have search the Augusta Chronicle Archives, Ancestry.com and numerous other exploring places. I dont find anything.

1910 - Freeman Chance Committed Suicide at his home in Munnerlyn, Burke County, Ga

Burke County Folks 1882-1900, Jo Knight

10-22-1910

Mr. Freeman Chance committed suicide at his home in Munnerlyn Friday morning last by stabbing himself with a pocket knife in the region of the heart. Mr. Chance was in bad health and despondent. We are told that he talked of the matter several times and told some one that he attempted it before but the knife pricked the skin and deterred him. But said that the next time he tried it he intended putting a piece of paper under the point of the knife until he struck the fatal blow.
He was a single man about 58 years and was occupying a room a short distance from the house of a relative. Early Friday morning a nephew went to his room to inquire after him, when he quietly informed him that he had stabbed himself. He lived a short time afterwards. His remains were followed to Habersham.
Will/estate lookup; early 1800s; Alexander MADDUX

Is there anyone out there with a will book? I am trying to locate my brick wall, Alexander MADDUX (also spelled MADDOX & MATTOX). I know that he existed, and that he died before 1810 as he is mentioned in another estate (unfortunately, no county is mentioned).

It is rumored Alexander died in Greene County, but I have personally been to Greene County searched the courthouse thoroughly. I can find no probate or land records for Alexander in Greene County. I have been to four counties total and have not found his estate. The cost of these fruitless trips is beginning to add up; especially since I have no other choice than to systematically search all early counties in GA.

I know Alexander died before 1810, and I know he had an estate, but it's unclear as to which county he died. So, if you have a will book available for this county, will you please look for Alexander MADDUX? I appreciate your time and help very much. Thank you!
