John A Greene and wives Laura A and Nancy Jane are buried at Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery, near Harlem in Columbia County Georgia. They're on Find A Grave. Here's the extract of one obituary:

The Columbia News, Harlem, Georgia, Thursday February 9, 1933

Died Mrs. Eugenia Ivey, 67 in Savannah. Born in Harlem and daughter of John Green prominent Columbia County resident. In addition to children survivors were one sister Mrs. George Holsonbake of Harlem and three brothers, James O., Jeff D., and Austin B. Green, all of Augusta.

No children were names in Nancy Jane Greene's 1917 obituary. Austin Greene's 1943 obituary listed his wife and four children but no brothers or sisters. James O Greene's 1948 obituary listed his wife, one son and three brothers and a sister; Arthur Greene of Albuquerque, N.M., Jeff Greene, Augusta and Lee Greene of Harlem; and one sister, Mrs. George Holenbake, Augusta
I am trying to find information the John A. Greene who married Mary A. A. Denham in 1850 Columbia County. In one source it says that he was the son of James Daniel Green and Sarah Harris. However, most genealogies say that that John A. Green married first to Laura A. Reynolds and second to Nancy Jane Stanford. I can find four children for the Greene/Denham marriage - John Albert, Josephine, Hattie Emoly and Annie Talulah. All were supposedly born in Columbia County, Georgia. I can't find this family in any census.

While researching Jack Burns (noted as a freeman of color), questions on how he obtained his freedom came up - Was he always free? Did he come to America as an indentured servant - or did his owner free him??? How did he obtain the land he owned?

While searching, I came across this website - and was wondering if anyone knew anything about this project - or find any history relavent to freeing of slaves prior to the Civil War -

Legacies of British Slave-Ownership
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/project/

Thank you - MAK

My ggg grandparents were Eliza Ramsey and George W. Lively.

Eliza died suddenly in NYC on 2/27/1859, and is buried there in Marble Cemetery. Her husband George quickly moved the family back to Georgia, where he remarried on 6/21/1859 to Susan A. Fielder. But then he died in a train accident on 9/26/1860. His 4 children were distributed to Eliza's siblings to be raised.

Their 3rd child was Rev. William Lively, a firey Primitive Baptist minister in central Alabama, born 9/1849 and died 10/2/1912 in Birmingham. He married Martha Stanton Mullins (b. 3/1/1858 in Smiths Station, AL, d. 5/3/1933 in Birmingham) on 9/20/1877 in Lee County, AL.

I've got a lot more on this Lively thread, as my maternal grandmother was a Lively. Would be interested in sharing any other data on this Eliza Ramsey lineage.

Michael Riggs
Hi, my family is not of the Mundy family. I however have been spending allot of time doing my own genealogy. For this reason I have a big desire to share good family information.

I have a business that cleans out old "some very old" properties. I usually don’t come across old letters, but if they look very old I do look at them.

Today as I was cleaning out an old camper on the property of misc. trash I found an old brown trash bag. Inside was a pile of letters dated 1910-1913 and some from misc date including 1940s. I came home and realized this was family correspondence from a son that died named John Mundy to his "momma and papa". If these are of interest to any Mundy family please let me send them to you. I really hate to dispose of family treasures. There read about all the members of this family in that era. Including wishing congrads to a sister’s marriage etc.

Hope this helps someone out there.
Hi - Im actually researching two John McDonald lines, because DNA says that Mary Mollie McDonald (b. ca. 1770, daughter of John McDonald who was a Deputy Indian Agent under Capt John Stuart, and lived among the indians ca 1763 - This line connects to the Shoreys. In Tennessee. She married Daniel Ross, if I remember right) and my ancestress, Rachel E Ann McDonald (b. 1806 probably Jefferson Co GA), (married Robert Littleton Albritton) reported as a daughter of a John McDonald and Mary, who lived in Jefferson Co GA ca 1799-1840, when John died and was buried on Ogoochee River. This John was reportedly born 30 Oct 1774 in Scotland) are related, having a common female ancestor (how far back, I dont know). One source says the parents of the Jefferson Co GA John are Duncan and Shusanna MacIntosh MacDonald from Perthshire, Scotland, but I can't prove this yet. I can't prove exactly who Rachel's parents are yet. Can anyone tell me anything about these John McDonald men?

Thank you ever, ever so much. Until recently, I knew almost nothing of my grandmother and certainly had no idea she had siblings.

I have 2 questions about my grandmother, Lula Powell Gonzalez, you may be able to help me with. (1) Her marriage in 1910 to my grandfather was her second marriage. She had a daughter, Alice, with her first marriage. I have tried and tried to find the marriage record of her first marriage, but have been unsuccessful. I think my mothers half sister's(Alice) maiden name was Walton. Any suggestions how I can trace her 1st marriage? I do know Alice was born in Kentucky about 1908, but where I have no idea. There are a tremendous number of Walton's (and Powells) in KY, and given Alice's birth date, the Census Records do not have record of her or my grandmother. (2) My grandmother, Lula, died in 1928 when my mother was only 4 years old. Her death record is available, but to obtain a copy I apparently must also have the month and date she passed. She must have died from an illness(as opposed to accident/other)as my mother said she might have lived had she seen a doctor early on. Do you know how I can obtain the death record w/o the month and date?

Ironically, with the info you provided, it sounds like Hardy Jr's roots are probably via Robeson County, NC. My father's family, the Johnson's, settled there in the late 1700's. Interesting that my parent's familes came to Escambia Counties of AL and FL and most likely knew nothing or little of each other.

Once again, I cannot thank you enough. Any help with my 2 questions above are so appreciated. My email is kyishome@cox.net if you would prefer to answer via email.

Take care and the Happiest of New Year's.

Norma:

You might already know this but your Hardy Powell is actually a Jr., son of Hardy Powell & Mary Jane Etheridge of Monroe Co., AL. They mar. 1843 there and show in the 1850 census there, along with Irwin Powell and Quinny Powell.

There were several Powell families who moved through Monroe Co., AL. To my knowledge they are not related.

Irwin, Quinny & Hardy Powell are unquestionably related. I can not tell you exactly how. Both Irwin & Hardy are there early. Quinny Powell moved there just before 1850, coming from Lee Co., GA. He is likely a son of Nathan Powell of 1810 Robeson Co. NC, 1830 Dooly Co., GA, & 1840/50 Lee Co., GA. Nathan Powell d. Lee Co., GA in March 1851.

Nathan Powell is a son of Douglas Powell, Jr. of Robeson Co., NC. Douglas Powell, Jr. had about 15 children by at least two wives. The Elizabeth Powell who shows in 1840 Monroe Co. AL might well be the (much younger) second wife of Douglas Powell, Jr. This is complete speculation.

By 1860, Hardy Powell, Sr. is dead and Mary Jane remar. to Berry Chisholm. The Chisholms are also from Robeson Co., NC.

Your Hardy Powell, Jr., age 9, shows in the Berry Chisholm household. Hardy, Jr. died about 1911 and is bur. in the same lot as your grandmother, Lula, at Flomaton. Missouri Ballard Powell & dau. Alice are also there.

There were a number of other children in Hardy & Missouri Powell's family:

1. Charles Powell who mar. Lucille Tate. They went to Mobile, AL, briefly to Montgomery, AL then Oklahoma City then to Houston, TX by 1940. A son, James Herbert Powell b. 1925 in Montgomery, AL recently died in Houston.

2. Flora Powell mar. Aubrey Campbell. They show: 1910 Pensacola, FL, 1916 Pensacola, FL, 1920 Arcadia, LA, 1923 - 1940 Houston, TX.

3. Wm Quinny Powell mar. Nanie C. UNK, 1910 Escambia Co., AL w/ Hardy Powell. By 1830, they were in Oklahoma City. His son James Herbert Powell was in Mobile, AL w/ his Uncle Charles Powell in 1920. By 1930, Jas. Herbert was in OK. He d. 1961 in Contra Costa, CA.

4. Of course, you know that your Lula Powell mar. Eric Irenus Gonzalez and lived in Pensacola.

5. There is also Alice Powell, who seems to have never married. She is bur. w/ her parents @ Flomaton, AL along w/ your Lula Powell Gonzalez.

6. There might be another dau. named Anna but I know nothing about her. Missouri reported 6 children on the census; she might be the sixth.

A lot of these families can be traced via Ancestry.

John Powell

Hi. I would sure love to have any information on Hardy and Missouri Powell. They would be my great grandparents on my Mother's side. My Mother's mother (my grandmother) was Lula Powell Gonzalez. I discovered Lula's parents thru ancestry census records in the past 3-4 months. Lula had another daughter, Alice, who was my mother's half sister. Many, many thanks. Norma Miller

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

You haven't supplied any useful information.

All you have supplied is a "want list".

DOB + birthplace is needed to search.

Also - Deanna McRae King is our cousin (she has posted here as well). Her great great grandmother and our great great grandmother were sisters. Our families were very close back then.

I just got off the phone with my Aunt Sylvia, she and my mom and other siblings grew up with Aunt Jennie's kids...Gerald, Danny, Gwen, Malinda, Curtis, Raymond. There was also Lydia (she used to visit us in Brooklyn) and Doris (she lives in Atlantic City). Are you Danny's daughter - your mom is Rose? We are just guessing....until you call. Aunt Alma is the only living sister, and George the only living brother. I have a favorite picture of four of the sisters together (in 1940s) I will share with you when we connect. I dont see a phone or email for you anywhere.
;-)

Does anyone know the relationship between these three men found in the 1840 Federal Census for Columbia County, Georgia?

Matthew D. Holsenbeck District 6, Columbia Co.
Alfred Holsenbeck District 2, Columbia Co.
Marshall Holsenbeck District 2, Columbia Co.

I suspect that they are brothers. By 1850, Marshall is still in Columbia, Alfred has moved on to Jasper Co., Georgia; and Matthew D. appears to have died. If I have them correctly, Alfred m. Melissa Howle or Owens [I have two different notes for her surname], and Marshall m. Martha Wilkins. Do not know who Matthew D. was married to. Would appreciate any feedback on these three.

Thanks -- Ronnie

I have done a lot of research on this family. I believe that Mary Elizabeth is on the 1910 census as Elizabeth Huck in Oxford, Newton, GA. living with her daughter Fannie Johnson. Elizabeth is also buried in the Oxford Cemetery.
Carol

I believe his name is Burton Bedford Hicks, Jr and his father is Burton Hicks, Sr and mother is Anne Hattaway. I don't have any information about Mary Elizabeth's first husband. The Hicks were railroad people and he probably went to Thomasville with the train. The Hicks were in Harlem, GA His older brother is Newnan Hicks who founded Harlem.

I am trying to track down my family line. My great-grandfather was William T. Wren (1872-1954), son of George and Lavinia Whitaker Wren. George lived in Jefferson, Emanuel and Tattnall Counties).

I think George was the son of Nathaniel Wren and Sarah Jane Roland Wren. (Nathaniel lived in Jefferson and Richmond Counties).

I think Nathaniel was the son of Francis Wren and Elizabeth Corbett, but cannot confirm at this time.

Do these names ring a bell with anyone?

Eddie & Emy,
Did you know that Fitz Maurice Hunt, was descended from the first King of England? (Although in talking to Eddie, it should have been obvious to me that he came from aristocratic stock!:)
Although historians say there are probably thousands of direct descendants alive in the world today, few have been able to prove their lineage. However, one of our 7th cousins, a woman by the name of Judith Di-Sandolo who lives in Glamorganshire, South Wales, was able to do so.
The English Heritage Society had put an advertisement in international newspapers, including Europe, America, and Australia requesting people submit their family trees that traced their lineage back to the time of the Battle of Hastings in Sept. 1066 when William from Normandy in France invaded England and took the crown of England. English Heritage was looking for people alive today who could trace their lineage back to the blood line of Edward the Confessor and to his heir, Edgar the Atheling's sister, Saint Margaret of Scotland .
Thousands of people responded to the appeal and sent in their trees. These trees were scrutinized by historians at the offices of English Heritage, but only a few (including Judith's) were named as having provable lineages back to the original Royal Family of England.
I've included a brief history concerning Edward the Confessor, direct descendant of King Alfred the Great. And below it, an outline of St. Margaret's descendants down to Fitz Maurice's great great grandfather, Vere Hunt. (While we are descended from Vere's son, John, our distant cousin, Judith, is descended from Vere's other son, Henry.)
Your Yankee Cousin,
Donna
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the year 1066 on the 5th of January the old King of England died, his name is now recorded by history as Edward the Confessor. He was a direct descendant of the famous King Alfred the Great. Edward had no children and so there was no direct heir to take the throne. He did have a grand-nephew called Edgar but unfortunately he was only a young boy when Edward died. Edgar is now recorded as Edgar the Atheling. The Barons, Clergymen on other powerful men in England held a Witan, or council to decide what should happen as Britain was under threat of invasion from Norway, Holland and France.
It was a decision of the Witan that a son of a powerful Baron by the name of Harold should be crowned King and lead the English army to repel the foreign invaders. In September, Harold marched the army north to Yorkshire and on 20th September he was victorious by fighting off invaders from Norway. The same day news arrived to say that England was being attacked on the South coast. Harold marched his men towards this new threat and on the 14th of October 1066 a battle was fought near Hastings on the south coast of England. Harold was killed and William from Normandy (known as William the Conqueror) took the crown of England.
While Edgar the Atheling had no descendants, he did have a sister named Margaret. History records her name as Saint Margaret of Scotland. Margaret had married Malcolm 3rd King of Scotland with whom she had children. It is her descendants that are considered to carry the blood line of the original Royal family of England, Alfred the Great.

Here is the Family Tree that links us with the Original Royal Family of England (direct descendents of St. Margaret of Scotland).
1 Margaret (St Margaret) of Scotland 1045 – 1093 (Eddie & Donna's 31st Great Grandmother )
+Malcolm 3 King of the Scots 1031 - 1093
2 Matilda Eadgyth Edith Canmore of the Scots 1079 - 1118
+Henry De Normandy 1 King of England 1068 - 1135
3 Matilda Empress Maud De Normandy 1102 - 1167
+Geoffrey Count of Anjou Plantagenet 1113 - 1151
4 Henry Plantagenet 2 King of England 1133 - 1189
+Eleanor Duchess De Aquataine 1122 – 1204 (1st wife)
5 John Lackland 1 King Of England 1167 - 1216
+Isabel (King John) of Gloucester FitzRobert 1169 - 1217
6 Joan Joanna Princess of Wales Plantagenet 1190 - 1237
+Llewelyn The Great ap Iorweth ap Seisyll 1173 - 1240
7 Angharad Llewellyn Seisyll 1206 -
+Maelgwyn Fychan 1200 -
8 Ellen Maelgwyn Fychan 1223 -
+Maeredydd Owain 1215 - 1265
9 Owain Lord Owain 1240 – 1275
+Margaret Maelgon 1240 -
10 Angharad Owain 1258 -
+Owain Lord Maredydd 1245 - 1275
11 Llewellyn Lord Maredydd 1276 - 1309
12 Thomas Maredydd 1297 - 1343
13 Ellen Maredydd 1325 -
+Gruffydd Fychan Glendower 1315 -
14 Owen (Owain Glyndwr) Glendower 1359 – 1415
+Margaret De Hanmer 1360 - 1420
15 Alys Alice ferch Owain Glyndwr Glendower 1382 -
+Henry Sir Sheriff Scudamore 1380 -
16 Joan Scudamore 1405 -
+Griffith Dunn 1400 - 1443
17 John Sir Dunn 1425 - 1503
+Elizabeth (Sir John Dunn) De Hastings 1425 - 1507
18 Margaret (Edward Trussel) Dunn 1445 -
+Edward (Margaret Dunn) Sir Trussel 1463 -
19 Elizabeth (John De Vere) Trussel 1493 - 1527
+John 15th Earl De Vere 1490 – 1539
20 Aubrey De Vere 1517 - 1579
+Bridget Gibons 1525 - 1577
21 Jane (Henry Hunt) De Vere 1549 - 1620
+Henry (Jane De Vere) Hunt 1532 - 1613
22 John Captain Hunt 1582 - 1670
+Ruth Sanders 1585 - 1650
23 Vere Hunt 1613 - 1681 (Fitz Marice's great, great grandfather)
+Mary 1620

This is a photo of Kilcooley Abbey, built in 1182, where Rev
