I need a quick lookup in "Facets of Fannin: A History of Fannin County, Georgia", if anyone would be so kind.

I believe that I got information about John Watson (born c. 1825 Haywood County, NC) being the son of George William Watson (born 1802 Rutherford County, NC) and Frances "Fannie" Gribble (born 1805 Mecklenburg County, NC).

John married Sarah "Sally" Narcissus Berry c. 1854 - probably in GA.

I would like to know if there is any reference to John and Sally in the "Facets of Fannin" book. I am also wondering if there is any information about the parents of Sally Berry being James D. Berry and Nancy Jones.

William Hayes/Samantha Coleman

Hello, Hayes researchers - just some updates about William/Bill Hayes, mystery man. Rumor has it he may have been born or raised in Fannin County --

Upon looking at William's 1930 census more carefully, it states his first marriage was at 21, which would make it 1886. Samantha's first marriage was at 22, which would have been 1892, with Bill, presumably. So, it follows he was married before??

I've got a copy of his death certificate from Polk County, which had his dates of birth, 28 Jan 1865, and death, 19 July 1939, but no parents' names. The last residence is listed as Farner, TN. His son Sylvester was the informant. No cause of death listed - died at 1:00 p.m. The certificate not signed by a MD until 8/17/1939 - Dr. H. P. Hyde.

His place of birth is listed differently on many documents - on the death certificate it's Polk County, TN.

Here's the census info:

1900 8th Civil District, Ducktown, Polk County, TN (he lists his place of birth as Georgia, same for his parents)
Samantha's had 5 children; 4 living.

1910 Hothouse Township, Cherokee County, NC (he lists place of birth as Georgia for himself, North Carolina for his parents). Samantha's had 10 children; 8 living.

1920 Polk County, TN (he lists his place of birth as Georgia for himself and parents)

1930 Polk County, TN (he lists his place of birth as NC; parents' as United States)

There are delayed birth certificates for Effie A. - 11 Dec, 1909; Lillie L., 10 Feb 1895; and Wilburn M., 20 Aug 1902; all in Cherokee County, NC.

Questions: which two died? I haven't found anything further on Earnest as an adult, but is there another child I've missed?

Does anyone know anything about a prior marriage? Does anyone have a copy of their marriage certificate, if there was one?

Does anyone have a copy of any bible entries regarding the family?

That's it for now - many thanks.

Donna
Permelia (Milly) Williams Botts married Nathan Parris, April 8, 1866, in Fannin Co. after her first husband, James Jason Botts, died in the Civil War at Knoxville. They were residents of Fannin Co. on the 1880 census where Nathan was age 62 and Millie was 44. Seeking info on her burial site probably in Fannin Co. Can't locate in "Fannin Co. Cemetery Records" by Helen W. Casada. Permelia may have been buried with Nathan or he may be buried with his first wife and Permelia buried elsewhere. Also Permelia's age differs on the 1880 and 1850 censuses. So her tombstone could show either 1830 or 1836 as birthdate. Thank you

Descendants of James Andrew Moore??

I NEED HELP!! I'm actually looking for the ANCESTORS of my great-grandfather, James Andrew Moore. Here's my problem.

The farthest I can go back is my
> great-grandfather, James Andrew
> Moore (17OCT1840 - 06NOV1913). He shows up for the
> first time, age 19,
> on the 1860 Fannin Co, GA census, living in the
> household of James
> Parks. His occupation is listed as miller. It shows
> he was born in
> Georgia, and later census indicate that his parents
> were born here as
> well. Except for service in the Civil War, he
> apparently lived in Fannin
> county the rest of his life. Oddly, five of his six
> children ended up in
> Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis (formally Appling and
> Coffee) County, which is
> in south Georgia. (Fannin is in north Georgia, on
> the North
> Carolina/Tennessee line.) I have no idea why. A
> Girtman (That is the
> maiden name of a great-grandmother) did marry a
> Sarah A. Moore, who was
> born 18 JUL 1848. I'm GUESSING that there MIGHT be a
> connection with her
> and James Andrew (brother? Cousin?), but again, I
> can't find one. So
> far, that's all I have.
>
>
> My grandfather, John Avery Moore, married a daughter
> of James Hendrick
> Latimer, His sister Callie married a Latimer son.
> James hendrick's wife
> was a Girtman, so I'm connected there as well. (The
> Girtmans, and I
> believe the Latimers are mentioned in "Pioneers of
> Wiregrass Georgia" I
> also have some Tillmans in there.)
>
> By the way, the five Moore kids who ended up in south
> Georgia were (in
> order of age) Henry Gaines, Thomas Reneau, John
> Avery, Oscar Perry, and
> Callie Jane.
>
> Does any of this ring a bell?? Thanks!
I can make out John Long and son Daniel in the census. I know his wife is Vida Dillingham. The wife's name listed is difficult for me to decipher. Is it Viena or something else. The date of this census is 5 May 1910. The wife and John state they have been married 8 years. The wife's age is 23. She states she is the mother of 4 with 1 living.
In the Hemptown District 1308, dated 15 June 1910 is also Vida Dillingham Long with daughter Lilly living in her mother's household. She is age 23. She states she is mother of 1 with 1 living. She states she has been married 3 years.
I believe these two are the same person that was counted twice in different locations. Can anyone help me with the name of the one in Flint Hill District?

Old Fannin County Geography Help Needed

Is there a map available online or in another publication that outlines Fairplay (or Fair Play) Township as it existed in Fannin County in the late 1800's? (1870-1890)

Alternately, I'd settle for a map of the Georgia militia districts. I know that militia district 1025 became part of that became Fairplay Township by 1880 but I have no clear idea where either are actually located.

Failing a map, is there someone familiar with old Fannin County geography that can describe the area that was covered by Fairplay?

There is an old query already up about the location of the Rollin Post Office. I'd really love an answer to that one too as I've got several old documents referencing that location. It clearly pre-dates Fannin County because I have seen it used as early as 1841 and heard of use back to 1836. Is it possible that the Rollin Post Office was actually not in the area that became Fannin and that it remained in Union County?

Second geography related question. Can anyone tell me anything about the early history of the community of Brown Mill?

And last geography question: Is there a good source available about early (1845 through 1900) history of marble (or other stone) quaries that might have operated in Fannin or Union counties?

Thanks much for any help.

Looks like I have to make a trip down from Massachusetts. I have written courthouses in Fannin, Gilmer & Union counties trying to find information regarding my gggrandmother with no luck.

I am hoping that someone might have some suggestions on where I should look when I come there, hopefully this summer.

This is my situation:
I assume that my gggrandmother possibly died giving birth to her second child. Her husband remarried 3 months after the birth of this child. I find him on the census for many years with second wife, those 2 children and other children from the 2nd wife.

The date that my gggrandmother was last to be heard of was May of 1868 when she gave birth to my gggrandmother's brother.

I have both my gggrandmother and her brother's death certificates and they both state they were born in Fannin County. I have been unable to locate either of their birth certificates. I also have not been able to locate anything on the marriage of my gggrandparents or the death of my gggrandmother.

Any suggestions on where I should look?

Thanks in advance, Carol

(note: Redman is also sometimes Redmon or Redmond also Martha Isabel Killian was the second wife of Thomas JD Lance)

Amanda Redman is on the 1860 census with her mother, Susanna Forester Redman Stone, her stepfather John Stone, her natural siblings Dallas and Emanuel. They are in GILMER Co. Her birth father was Stephen Redman.

Thomas JD Lance is on the 1860 census with his mother Catherine and father Thomas. They are in FANNIN Co.

By March 15, 1867 my ggrandmother Mary Lance is born to Amanda & Thomas JD Lance.
By May 23, 1868 my ggrandmothers brother John Thomas Lance is born to Amanda & Thomas JD Lance.

I am also looking for birth records for these two children. Mary Lances death certificate says she was born in Fannin Co. But of course someone else gave the information.
Looking for info on Tom Dillard borm in 1866 and died in 1905. I think he may have been a brother to William Keener that Susie sister Louraine was married to. Tom & Susie had 2 sons Claude & William Harley. Susie later married Harve Magness I found the marriage certificate but they may have later divorced because she was using Dillard as her last name when she died. Susie & Harve had a son Allie Perry who used the last name of Dillard. I have info to share and will be willing to share my pictures of Tom, Susie, & the tree grown sons.

Simon Brown NC GA Tenn

I am looking for information on the Brown's that lived in Cherokee County, NC and also in Monroe County, TN. The specific Brown's are Simon Brown, wife Margaret, Leonard, James, Nancy, Esther, Emanuel Monroe and Neil Bery. This family in living in Beaverdam, Cherokee County, NC in 1870 and 1880. Several of the family are living in Monroe County in 1870 and 1880 - Leonard Brown, wife Elizabeth, Sarah Adeline and John. John Brown married Martha and Rachel Leming and Nancy Jane Stewart in Monroe County. Emanuel Monroe married Ellen Mills and they live in Monroe County in 1870 or 1880 also. I think Nancy Brown married a Peter Costner in Monroe County and Sarah A. Brown also married a Costner in Monroe County.

Simon and family also can be found in the 1860 Gilmer Co, GA census. Simon and Margaret had the following children that I know of: Leonard, James, Nancy, Ester (married a Pace), Susan Adeline, Emanuel Monroe, and Neil Bery. It appears that this family moved from NC to Georgia in about 1850 and then moved back to NC and Tennessee after 1862.

Before 1860 I find a Simon Brown in Buncombe County, NC that is between 20-30 and has small children. I am thinking that this might be the Simon I am looking for. Also, In posts to this County, I find a D. Morgan Brown that has a son born around 1809 or 1810 named Simon. I am wondering if my Simon and the son of Morgan are one in the same.

If you have any other information on this family, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Michael Brown
Tulsa, OK

My great grandfather Samuel Lafayette Lovell was born around 1866 in Chattanooga,Tennessee to Julia C. Lovell (nee Priest(?)) and unknown Lovell of Alabama. After Sam's father died (I am assuming), his mother Julia C. remarried a man by the name of Enos.J.Taylor and they settled down in Caldwell and then Mobile,Fannin,Georgia. The couple had two more children...George Taylor and John L. Taylor and a sister of Enos, Artamissa E. Patterson, also lived with the family according to the 1880 census. Does anyone have any info on this family? I am curious as I have little on this line of my family. thankyou, Brenda Kent. great great granddaughter of Julia C. Taylor.

James was born in North Carolina about 1788 (where?, who were his ancestors?) Ann was born about 1795 in North Carolina. I believe she was a sister to Violet Brock, Jesse Brock, and Payton Brock. Part of this is guess work and I would like to find any information which might shed light on this pair.

My gmother Minnie Garland was born in Fannin County GA, sep 23 1883. her mother was Eliza Davis brn 1862, Fannin Co, her father was Thos C Garland, brn in NC, Elizas father and mother were George W Davis and Martha Brookshire Davis, both of whom are buried in the Tilly Baptist Church Cemetary. The
listings for the plot names are only for people born before 1850, there was a brother to my gmother name unknown, who died as a young man, his last name would be Garland. The plot where my gggrand parents are buried also is a Garland plot. Is there any way to find the number of Garlands and their names and possibly the names of their parents from some registry or someone who might have access to that information. Would also like any info on the Brookshires. We have no knowledge of the parents of Martha Brookshire Davis.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Fannin County Death Certificates 1919-1925

Still looking for those that want to help bring copies of these back to Fannin County. For some reason when the vital records left the courthouse one time and went to the health center the early records didn't make it back. The files begin in 1926. A few people have donated money for me to get copies, but in large I have been paying for the copies. The vital records for Georgia in order to make more room in the warehouses have given for safe keeping Georiga Death records for 1919-1930. Price is 30 cents a copy. Some of my cousins have donated to the cause, but others to donate are needed. Plan when all are collected and copied to give a copy back to the courthouse, The Fannin County Historical Society, The Fannin Library, The Marrietta Library (Georiga Room) and the Atlanta Public Library. If you would like to sponser an ancestor or make a donation please contact me. any little bit helps. Records not only record death, but can help mark unmark grave since they list burial place etc. Many, many uses once collected.

Need sponsors for death certificates or entire year of death certificates

Birth and death records began in Georiga in 1919. The Fannin County Courthouse should have these records from the start date, but they don't. At some point the certificates and the indexes were moved to the county health department. When they were brought back to the courthouse the early index was missing as well as most all certificates until 1926. The first index and the first complete folder of death certificates begins in 1926. Georgia Vital records in order to make room in the warehouses has placed for safe keeping death certificates from 1919-1930 with the Georiga Archives. I think Fannin County needs a copy of these records. Would like to replace a copy at the courthouse, give a copy to the library and the Baugh House (Historical Society for Fannin County) for research. That way Fannin County will have three places these can be looked up. I have purchased the entire year of 1919 (84 documents). Looking for others that would like to sponser this project by buying a whole year or by just paying for a copy of some ancestor you need a death certificate for. A single copy would be $3.00 (well below the $10.00 if you went through Vital Records for a request). A list of what is available is on www.Ancestry.com. Go to the Georgia deaths section. To pull up an entire year just just type in year and Fannin County and it will bring up all certificates. The next year 1920 has 114 certificates. Would like to make some time of database as well to list information off certificates for easy access. Let me know your thoughts on the matter or if you need a copy of any certificate.
I can also be reached at
Jeff Hunter
1374 Wayne Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306
