Surnames: Fowler, Porter
This post is to all the descendants of James Fowler and William M Fowler of northern Cherokee Co and Southern Forsyth Co. I was at the archives pulling compiled confederate records and pension records for William T Fowler and George W Fowler. At first I assumed that this George W Fowler was the brother to William T Fowler and son of James Fowler. While reading the pension records of Sarah A Porter Fowler (wife of William T Fowler), I noticed that in the testimony of George W Fowler he states that he is the cousin of William T Fowler (not his brother as I had assumed). So I pulled the pension records of George W Fowler and he is the son of William M Fowler. George W Fowler’s son Benjamin L Fowler testified in his pension records. So since George W Fowler testified that he was a near neighbor and cousin of William T Fowler, it makes sense to me that William M Fowler and James Fowler were related and I believe probably brothers.

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this or had other evidence as to their kinship. I had always thought that since they lived so near each other that they were probably related.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Robert

Glad to see that others agree on the kinship issue. I descend from James Fowler thru his son Phillip K Fowler. Keep me posted if you come across any new family info.

Thanks,

Thanks for the documented proof that William Marcus Fowler was the brother of James Fowler. I stated my interest in genealogy from conversations with a friend who was kin to James Fowler, almost 10 years ago. I knew that the Fowlers were buried at Hightower Baptist Church from my grandmother Ether (nee Edwards)Howard and her mother, Lena Gertrude (nee Fowler) Edwards. William Marcus Fowler was the grandfather of Lena. When I started checking and determined that the both William and James were from the Hightower area of Cherokee Co., Ga., I knew that there was a definite relationship between these two men. Your information is the first proof that members of both families claimed kinship. I'm now interested to know about their parents. I had read where William was not actually a Fowler. That he was born a Barton, but after the Revolutionary War, found his family had either left or had been killed. He then lived with a neighbor family named Fowler and took thier name. The fact that he had a brother makes it less likely that this story true, unless they both served during the War at the same time and something happened to the remainder of their family that prevented them for finding them. Also in case you do not know, James and Sarah Fowler were founders of New Harmony Baptist Church in Forsyth Co., Ga. Keep up the good work. Maybe the next time you are at the archives, you can see if there is any Revolutionary War records on James or William.

Hi Howard

There has been alot of discussion on some of the other boards about the Barton theory. My greataunt lives in Canton, GA. When I started my research in 1999 I spoke with her. She asked how far back I wanted to trace the family and I said as far as possible. She then said that I might have a problem because it had been passed down that the Fowlers were originally Bartons. I later heard from other researchers about the Revolutionary War part. I think that the Fowler in question would have been the father of William and James. James was born in 1797 and William in 1803 so they would not have been born yet. You are the first descendant of William that I have heard mention this rumor. Several lines of James Fowler's family has heard the rumor passed down in one form or another. I would love to find some info on the parents of William and James.

I also heard from a researcher last week that possibly a 3rd brother was in Cherokee Co. There is a Thomas Fowler that lives next door to William in 1870. I haven't looked into this yet but I plan to do so soon.

Thanks,
Tracey

You are correct again. I got in a hurry and forgot that it was James and Williams' father who served in the Revolutionary War. I just looked at the 1870 census of Cross Roads Dist., Cherokee Co., GA and I also see this Thomas Fowler family on page 48, household 319. Thomas is 55 and Hannah is 50 and both were born in SC. William Marcus Fowler and Lucinda "Lucy" Elizabeth (nee Nix) Fowler are on page 47, household 317 and between William and Thomas is Valentine Nix, who I have assumed is a younger brother of Williams' wife Lucy. This Thomas Fowler is not in my database and I have never done any research on him. This gives me something new to look for in SC. I do not have any information on James and Williams' parents' name.

Robert,
Your GGfather George W. had a brother by the name of William W. Fowler. Was this William W. born in 1823 and did he marry Nancy Elizabeth Clark? I am struggling to find the father of our William Wiley Fowler
