Jasper M (Jake) Gravitt

Jasper M (Jake) Gravitt, b. May 30, 1854, married (Martha) Samantha Youngblood. His second wife was Angeline Crow. His parents were John B Gravitt and Anna Teresia Unknown. He had six siblings: Nancy Jane, Angeline, Julia L, Newton S, Leroy E and Kasady Gravitt.

Jasper had two children with Samantha Youngblood

1. Julia E Gravitt, 9/30/1878-4/11/1951

2. Mack Mulino Gravitt, 11/24/1879-3/29/1953

Julia E married Lewis E Brown of Gordon County. Their child "Peggy" Pearlyne married Lemmie Myron Pendley, and she is my mother. My father died 30 days before I was born and my mother died when I was 7. My grandparents, Julia and Lewis, raised me. I remember many stories that she would tell.

Julia was nicknamed and called "Big Maw". Her mother, Youngblood was claimed to be 1/8 Cherokee Indian. She told that as a child (Flowery Branch), she and her mother would go to her grandmothers house, which was a log cabin. Tobacco leaves were cured, rolled by hand and twisted. Pieces would be pulverized, rolled in crumpled brown paper and smoked, or the dust dipped as snuff. Chewed pieces would be placed between the logs to dry, then smoked in corn cobb pipes.

When she and her brother Mack were children their mother died. Jasper"Jake", their father went to Pickens county, there he married Angeline Crow. The children did not get along well with the new wife so Jake ask his father John B Gravitt, of Gordon County, and his brother Leroy, to raise his children.

A family reunion picture of the Browns and Gravitts, about 50 people, was taken at Julia and Lewis house about 1919. It was first thought that the picture did not include Julia, however more study shows that she is there. Anyway, Maurice Gravitt, who owns and runs the Golf Course on Dews Pond Road, said "well you know why, she's in the kitchen cooking. She was one of the best cooks you ever seen".

Julia like to fish and dip snuff. She almost allways had a snuff brush from a black gum bush in her mouth. Whenever it rained, and they could not work in the fields, she could be seen digging worms and heading for the creek to fish.

Would like to have any information on Samantha Youngblood parents, and on John B Gravitts parents.

Lodusta Tidwell, the daughter of Indian John(Winnafred and Young Deer) and Lucretia Thompson was my gr. gr. grandmother. Her daughter Nancy Brown, was my gr. grandmother.

she married James Miller and I was named after her. My grandpa was Joseph Mayse Miller, they called him "Blackie" or "Bot" because he had dark skin.

Does anyone have information on "Young Deer"? He was Cherokee. that's all that I know. Nancy reported being 1/4 Cherokee for the Dawes Rolls, so that means that there must have been more Cherokee in her family line? does anyone know who it was? Also need information on "John Washington Brown" Lodusta's husband..thinking he had to have Cherokee? does anyone know?

by pure coincidence I married a 'Brown'. getting back to my roots.

Dear Lem,

Do you know anything about Jake's brother, John B. Gravitt, born 1852? Was his nickname "Log" and why? Why was he listed at the end of John B. Gravitt's children in the 1860 census? He has been confused with the John L. (or B.?) Gravitt born to Alfred Gravitt and wife Janie (Langley) who was born in 1849. In fact, this information has been submitted to Family Treemaker and is on disk so we need to clear this up. Also, was John B. Gravitt who married Anna Teresa the Civil War soldier referred to in a letter by Hirmam Henson in a book on Forsyth County history? This Hiram Henson married Robert Gravitt's daughter, Nancy Angeline, which caused me to speculate that John B. Gravitt was Nancy Angeline's brother. However, I have been told by another researcher/descendant that John B. Gravitt (senior) was brother to James Gravitt, which means that Randolph was his father. The problem with this is that Randolph had another son named John, born around 1800 (my ancestor). Actually, this has never been proven but is likely from census records clues. Lastly, did you not know that Anna Teresa was a Gravitt too (she married her cousin)? Steve Mashburn found that out. Do you know him? His wife is a descendant of Jasper too.

Dear Sandra,

Do you happen to know whether Celia's mother, also named Celia, was a Gravitt before marriage to John? I was told that is was the case by a historian but he was not entirely certain. Maybe he was confusing the two Celias because the younger one did become a Gravitt when she later married Luke Gravitt. It would be very interesting if her mother was also a Gravitt.

I hope this information helps:

The parents of Martha Youngblood are James Walker Youngblood and Elvira Allen from Forsyth Co., GA. According to the family bible records, Martha (it does not have the name Samantha attached) was born on January 28, 1856. She married Jasper Gravitt on April 15, 1877. I do not have a record of her death but she may be buried in Bethel Church Cemetery, Forsyth Co. Her father was born January 9, 1812 in Greenville Dist., S.C. and married Elvira Allen on December 21, 1837 in Greenville, S.C. James Walker died on August 1, 1887 in Forsyth Co. (Will book A-2, pp. 278-280.)
Martha was already dead by the time of her father's will; however, a reference is made to her children "the children of Martha Gravitt to receive her shares" and that Jacob Gravitt was not to "have right or control to their money."
Alot of this information can be found in Don Shadburn's, "Pioneer History of Forsyth Co."

As a note: I am the great granddaughter of Georgia Youngblood Burris, Martha's sister.
