Swilling family of Forsyth County

In the last couple of months I have noticed several Swillings in the Censuses and Marriage lists of Forsyth County, and wonder if this is the family of John W. (Jack) Swilling who went west to Arizona in the middle 1860's. Is there anyone out there who is researching this family? And if so, are you aware that Jack Swilling founded the city of Phoenix?

The Phoenix newspaper reported the death of Jack Swilling's father, George W. Swilling, in Dawsonville about 1876. It is reported that Jack had a brother, Berry, which is one of the Swilling names on the 1850 census and a sister named Georgia, and there was a marriage between Georgia Ann Swilling and William G. Allen on Sep 9, 1847. Jack Swilling was born April 1, 1830 in either S.C. or Georgia.

I am doing a history of Phoenix and would love to correspond with anyone who is related to or is researching this family. I have a lot of information about Jack's activities in Arizona.

Jack Swilling was my 1st cousin three times removed. According to my records he was born April 1, 1830 in Anderson County, South Csrolina. In 1852 he married Mary Jane Grey in Watumka, Alabama. They had one child, Elizabeth Price Davis Swilling. According to family hearsay he deserted Jane and worked his way across the West to Arizona. There he married Trinidad Escalante
The magazine "Arizona Highways" carried a feature article a couple of years ago -- I'm sure you already know this.

reading some of your old posts to this list. Have many questions about John William Swilling the son of Malinda Ann Bramlett and Berry Benson Swilling. Do you have any history on Malinda Ann? or on John's sister Florida?

Thanks.
Sheila

Sorry, I don't know her parents names. Her brother is believed to be Reuben Bramlett, ca1820 - ca1894, who married Harriet H. Swilling 1846 Forsyth County. Malinda moved to Morgan Co., AL after the death of her husband in the 1850's. My new email address is lsregan@mindspring.com

Hi-
I don't know anything about the Swilling family, but my great-grandmother was Malinda Avi Barnes, married first to Saul Wesley Leatherman in Oklahoma in 1916, second to Miles Henry Bramlett around 1932 or maybe 1933 in Oklahoma. I descend from her first marriage, but have cousins from the second also. I would love to swap info if we're talking about the same family. (My Aunt Claudia, who passed away in December, did genealogy, and was a Bramlett from a prior marriage of Miles Henry, maybe Anna Ray.)
Thanks,

Shelby Baltzley

Georgia Ann Swilling Allen is my great great grandmother on my mother's side of the family. Her husband died at a young age and she raised their large family, I believe there were 9 and sent them all to college. The Swilling family can be traced back to Judith Jefferson who was Thomas Jefferson's aunt., She was the sister of Peter Jefferson, his father. You can find the entire line on Ancestry.com.
