My name is Molly Bejarano, and I am the wife of Joe Lara Bejarano. My husband's maternal grandfather was a Leandro Lara, whose biological father was John W. "Jack" Swilling of Phoenix fame. The story goes back in our family quite a ways, and we've always been told Jack, and an unnamed wealthy girl possibly named Concepcion de Lara, fathered Leandro, who was born in 1860-1862(place and actual birth day unknown) and who was then given to a family with the last name of Lara(possibly parents of Concepcion) to raise. We've all been told that Jack knew of Leandro, and apparently tried to claim him at about age seven near Mesilla, Dona Ana County New Mexico, but Leandro, not knowing Jack other than as his biological father, refused to go with him. What my husband's family is interested in is finding who Leandro's mother was, where he was born, where Leandro was conceived, and how the relationship with Leandro's mother began. We know Jack Swilling is listed as Leandro's father on his death certficate in the state of Arizona in 1952, but it lists his mother as being a Benigna Lara. The only Benigna Lara in the family is Leandro's daughter Benigna, who is my husband's mother. (No one knows who provided this information to the state of Arizona.) She, my husband's mother, was born in Silver City, N.M. to Leandro and his wife Petra Albillar Lara. Have you ever heard of Leandro, or can you confirm or have any validity to this story. Thanks, Molly Bejarano at molly@etcrier.net

Hi Molly

This story is well known in my family also. I have a copy of
Leandro's death certificate dated January 20 1952. The person who reported his death was my Great-Uncle Carlos Lara. Carlos was married to Margarita Nevarez my Grandmother's sister.

Leandro died in the house at 5 W. Fillmore Tolleson Az. I visited this house many times as a child. The Lara family is
considered to be part of my family tree.

If you can provide me with any additional info I know we can
fill in some of the voids in our families.

Linda Reagan gave me most of the information on the Swillings. If I can help be happy to.

Hi Carl - Please understand that much wrong info has been written about Jack Swilling [1830-1878] of Arizona. The book, "I Jack Swilling" is a fictional novel, not historically correct. Hank Swilling was not a son of Jack's, nor was he a 'half-breed.'
For a well written book about the life of Jack Swilling, please read "Jack Swilling Arizona's Most Lied About Pioneer" by Al Bates.

Do you have any information re: Malinda Bramlett born about 1831, who married Berry Benson Swilling? The last I have is the 1870 Morgan County, AL census. Living next door to Joel Bramlett, age 65 [born abt 1805]. Thanks for any help!

I am not sure if they are the same Malinda Bramletts. I have 2 in my tree Malinda Adaline Bramlett b. 1856 and a Malinda Ann Bramlett b.1838 both born in Georgia. I will send yo an invitation to the tree and you can look and see if I have anything you need. That would be the best way. Good luck. Wilma
