Hi David:
I was at the VA State Archives yesterday, researching these same names. My ggg granmother was Amelia Crain who was born Sept 1, 1795 in Knoxville, Knox Co., Tn and was living in Randolph Co., Il by 1810. She married Francis Garner in 1811. I have all documentation about this. What has always been a huge dispute, is who her parents were. Many "old" researchers think that it was John Benjamin Crain who was married to Mildred walton. I do know that she had a brother Thomas Crain who states that he was b. in GA and he m. the sister to my Francis Garner. Her name was Eleanor Garner (Wooten) then Crain. Other brothers were Squire Crain who married Louise Mansker on Feb 28, 1818 in Ill, .
In looking at some old records there were many early Crains in Randolph Co., IL by 1810. Ill. did not become a state until 1818. Most of these Crains, state they were born in TN/ or GA.
The history of Randolph Co. Il states that John Benjamin Crain settled in Rockwood Precinct , c. 1802 , SEct 22, twp 7, range 6. He had 7 sones and several daughters.
I looked at the Knox County, Marriage records and found that a Nance Crane/Crain was m. on Mar 05, 1797 in Knox County to a George Ingram. My Amelia and Francis Garner named one of their sons Ingram Garner.
I did find a early marriage record for a John Crane who m. a Susanah Scott in Rowan Co. NC on 16 March 1767. I do believe that Thomas Crain, Amelia's brother was born in GA. He stated on teh 1850 census that his father was from VA.
I would be happy to correspond with you if you are interested.
I found at the library a James B. Crain b. 18 Jun 1796, Savannah, Chatham, GA son of Sialas B. crain and Martha Reeve.
I live at 6116 Chesterfield Meadows Drive, Chesterfield, VA 23832
