      <description>I am looking for information on William Tweedell who died&lt;br&gt;in Franklin Co., Ga 1827.  My Tweedle descendant is Mary (Polly)Tweedle born 9 Jan 1805 near Athens, Wilkes Co., GA.&lt;br&gt;Her father was James Tweedle born 13 Mar 1779 in GA and died&lt;br&gt;1849 in Gibson, Indiana.  Her mother was Ann Morrison b.&lt;br&gt;15 Jan 1779 in Indiana.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I have copies of the Tweedle Bible.  Recently we found that&lt;br&gt;James' father may have been William Tweedell and not John&lt;br&gt;Tweedle. Compiled By: Patrick G. Wardell Lt. Col, U.S. Army Retired. &lt;br&gt;"Samuel esf 1778 Albemarle Co. VA; b. 10/12/1753; AFF 1853&lt;br&gt;Union Co. GA by s Samuel Bright that sol mvd from &lt;br&gt;Burke Co. NC, to Macon Co. GA, thence to Cass Co. GA, where&lt;br&gt;dd 10/31/38, leaving no widow but ch: Matthew, Jane Hyatt,&lt;br&gt;Sarah Bright, and Samuel."&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;On June 28, 1774 Samuel Bright entered 360 acres of land lying on either side of North Toe River in what is now&lt;br&gt;Toe River Township. It was processioned by &lt;br&gt;William Davenport, but when the tract was surveyed by &lt;br&gt;C.W. Beekman, county surveyor, on August 10, 1778, Burke Co.&lt;br&gt;took in this area. The chain bearers were Thomas White and&lt;br&gt;James Taylor White. The grant, dated March 5, 1780, was &lt;br&gt;registered in Book 3 of Burke County. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

      <description>I am descended from both John Catlet Martin and wife Elizabeth Terrell through William Terrell Martin, as well as Zachariah Martin to James Sr. to James Jr. to Mary Martin wife of Allen Acree. They were relatives but not brothers. Simon Terrell, Elizabeth's father's mother was Mary Martin in the line of Zachariah of Chatham County, NC. I have the wills of both John Catlet Martin and Zachariah Martin. I woudl love to see a copy of the will of Elizabeth Terrell and to understand how the information that John Catlet Martin adn James being brothers got started.       <description>Both James Martin and John Catlet Martin were my ancestors. They were not brothers. John Catlet Martin is the son of Capt. George Martin of Edgefield, SC. I have the Edgefield deed posts to prove this. John Catlet Martin is my paternal Martin ancestor James Martin Sr. was married to Rachel Headen/ Hayden and is the father of James Jr. the father of Mary Martin, the wife of William B. Acree, my paternal grandmother's line. James Sr. son of Zachariah of Chatham, NC is the brother to a James Martin 1773 or thereabouts who married someone other than Elizabeth Terrell, whose father Lt. Simon Terrell's mother was Mary Martin in the line of Zachariah, making me triple descended from the Martins. Zachariah and John Martin, the father of Abram the father of George may or may not have been brothers in VA. I have copies of the wills for both George Martin and Zachariah Martin.       <description>NOTE: This John Martin born 1773, son of Zachariah, is not the same as John Catlet Martin born 1783 son of George Martin. John Catlet was married to Elizabeth Terrell, daughter of Simon Terrell. This John Martin was married to Elizabeth Johnson with a completely different set of children not including William Terrell Martin or John Wesley Martin.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; I am descended from both James Martin son of Zachariah Jr. and John Catlet Martin, son of Capt. George Martin. This misinformation was mistakenly started by my third cousin Charles Miller. His great grandmother Lucy Ann Clementine Miller was the sister of my great grandmother Julia Ann Clementine Miller, both daughters of Adenia Mayson and James Miller of Habersham, GA.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; James son of Zachariah was a Revolutionary soldier who rose to the rank of Sgt. According to the History of Stephens County, GA only James came from Chatham, NC to Franklin County, GA. John Catlet Martin died in 1811 when he fell from a horse after the birth of his twin sons. His father Capt. George Martin died in 1804 in Edgefield, SC, and his will was not probated until 1817, according to Stella Pickett Hardy's Colonial Families of the Southern US. This misunderstanding about the delay of probate has left some to question whether John Catlet Martin was the son of George Martin, despite DAR records and family to the contrary which state that they are father and son.&lt;br&gt;</description>

      <description>Hi Jean: After looking into this yesterday, I am convinced you are right about Charles Miller, who is a great genealogist, but sometimes fallable as we all are. He is my third cousin since his great grandmother Lucy Ann Clementine Kesler and my great grandmother Julia Ann Clementine Kesler were sisters, and possibly twins, both daughters of George Kesler and Polly Miller. Darrell Andrew Martin was the first cousin of Julia since his mother was Emeline Miller. Charlas also propogated the myth that my grandmother Retha Acree Martin was the daughter of James Clayton Acree, when all census records and family documents and pictures prove beyond any doubt that Retha Jane Acree's parents are James Knox Acree, the double first cousin of James Clayton Acree, and Nancy Catherine Banks, the daughter of Russell Banks, killed in the Civil War, and Mary Yarbrough Banks. Russell's uncle Dr. Richard Banks is the namesake of Banks County. Andy</description>

      <description>I cannot say enough thanks for all this information you have provided to me.  I will get on it right away and try to get copies and sources so I can complete my supplemental process.  I'm sure the Zachariah Martin stuff came from Charles Miller who was doing a lot of research on the Martin family.  I believe his wife was a Kessler - which is on your side.  Charles and I had a lot of conversation on this, but I never really believed it.  I understand he has died withing the last few years.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;My husband was well known in the Atlanta area and, in fact, all over the US.  He was a specialist in allergy and immunology for the Atlanta Medical Associates (which of course changed names several times during the years).  He was President of the American College of Allergists for two years and also President of American Association of Certified Allergists for two years.  I'll send you a copy of his obituary by email.  I'm sure some of your folks knew him.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Again, thank you so much.  Wish I could help you in finding John Martin's grave.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I now live on Amelia Island in Florida.  We moved here in 2004 and I plan to stay here. The wife of Darrell Andrew Martin was Julia Kesler, his first cousin. Darrell's mother was Emeline Miller wife of William Terrell Martin. Julia's mother was Mary Polly Miller wife of George Kesler. The Miller sisters were daughters of James Miller and wife Adenia Mayson. Adenia was the daughter of Ann Nancy Conway of Virginia then SC, married to James Mayson Jr. James was the son of Col. James Mayson of Ninety Six, SC and wife Anne Goudy/ Goude. Ann Nancy was the daughter of George Conway Jr. whose father George Conway Sr. was the son of Edwin Ball III married to Ann Ball, half sister of Mary Ball, mother of George Washington. In fact Adenia Mayson and Ann Nancy Conway are both descended from Col. William Ball and Hannah Atherold, great grandparents of Washington three ways. Therefore the descendants of Julia Kesler and Darrell Martin are descended from the Balls six Ways. Zack Martin married Retha Acree, who is descended from the Balls one way through Rev. Thomas J. Maxwell. Thus the children of Zack and Retha are descended seven ways from the Balls.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Four of my cousins are doctors trained at Emory: Dan Martin a gynecologist in Memphis, Clyde Martin a urologist near Memphis, Wallace Martin a thoracic surgeon in Lawrenceville, Zack Martin a gastroenterologist in Lawrenceville. Their father was Dan Martin general surgeon in Lawrenceville. Dan and Zack were number one. Wallace was an all state tight end for Westminster who was all conference for Amherst. Dan was an All American soccer player drafted by the Atlanta Chiefs. Their father Dan was all conference fullback for Furman. My father Wallace played at UGA, and his brother Clyde boxed at North GA before being killed in WWII.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Have you seen the garbage out there that John Catlet Martin is the son of Zachariah Martin? I am descended from Zachariah through a separate line through son James Sr. a Revolutionary Soldier. I have the will in manuscript form from my grandmother Retha who was descended from that branch of the Martins. John Catlet Martin was born around 1783 and James Martin was born in 1760. John is the second son-- descent from Zachariah is false since that John never left NC and would be much older. James Sr. is also a Revolutionary Soldier, one of about 15 who are my ancestors.&lt;br&gt;Andy</description>

      <description>George Martin Died in 1804, Will Probated in 1817: Source- Colonial Families of Southern US &lt;br&gt; ANDREW MARTINadded this on 5 Nov 2009&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Captain George Martin died in 1804 according to Stella Pickett Hardy's Southern Families of the Southern United States, page 329 (1974), with the will probated in 1817 after his youngest son Benjamin reached the age of 20. The source listed is the Will Book A., of Edgefield, South Carolina, See pages 368-369. This delayed probate of the will explains why son John is listed as a beneficiary since the will had to have been written before 1804. John died in 1811 when he fell from a horse after the birth of children.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; MORE BACKGROUND&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Captain George Martin served in the volunteer company of South Carolina under Col. Leroy Hammond and General Williamson. His wife Alice Freeman was likely nicknamed Aly, which is mistranscribed from the cursive as Aby. The listed children of George Martin in my grandfather's old documents were John C., Matthew, Elizabeth, and George Jr. The delay in probate of the will may be related to the need for George to reach an age of majority. A Charles Hammond witnesses the will. John is likely born in SC or GA rather than Va. A separate, but related John C. Martin, son of Thomas, is also living in Abbeville/ Edgefield, SC, and is also a descendant of John and Abram the elder in Albemarle, VA. This will is referenced in Colonial Families of the Southern United States of America, by Stella Pickett Hardy (1911, 1965) where Alice Freeman is listed as the wife, and George is listed as son of Abram, son of the elder John Martin, married first to Letitia Lewis then Elizabeth Burwell. John married his second wife after his first wife Letitia died in 1716, the year Abram was born, possibly from complications of childbirth.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If John died in 1811, then he would predecease his father if the true death date of George is 1817. Given the lack of communication over the frontier, he may not have known that his son had died in Franklin County, Georgia. Alternatively, the listed date for probate of the will is delayed until the youngest son Benjamin is closer to the age of majority, and George would have died earlier than 1817. An earlier death date is supported by Stella Pickett Hardy's Colonial Families of the Southern US, which lists George's death date as 1804, seven years before John's death in 1811. She is very specific about the numbers of children and the fact that John settled in Franklin County. I can send you a copy. My CAR application referenced several DAR records and genealogy books for Edgefield, SC, and evidently has worked for others including my aunt Faye Martin Graves, as well as my dad's cousin Larry Whitfield, also a grandson of Darrell Andrew Martin. I can give you the registrar for Habersham County who assures me there will be no problem. Look at the story entitled George Martin CAR to get specifics on the volume numbers. Andy</description>

      <description>My husband's name was John G. Leonardy MD.  He practiced in Atlanta (midtown) for about 40 years.  I don't really want to put too much on such a public website, but if you will send me your email address, I'll fill you in.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Now Zach Martin is another familiar Family name.  John W. Martin had a son named Zach (who was a rr conductor and died of a heart attack).  He, his wife, and daughter are buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Since DAR and SAR are two different organizations, they don't share records.  Maybe George/John are still "legal" in SAR.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Have not seen the Stephens County Martin discussion.  I'll check it out.  I wonder if I am also related to these folks you mention.       <description>Hi Jeanne: Wow. What was his name? My uncle Dan Martin of Lawrenceville graduated number one in his class, and his son Zack Martin also of Lawrenceville did too.I did not graduate number one in Med School, but I was near the top in college, and was 1976 Georgia State STAR Student for having the highest SAT.  I wonder why they are not giving me a hard time about Capt. George Martin? My CAR application is being transitioned into SAR without too much controversy. Have you seen the Martin discussion in history of Stephens County, written by my grandmother?  I knew about Simon Terrell. I think I have over 15 soldiers, several of whom I am double descended from such as Col. James Mayson and Jedediah Garrison. Rev. Thomas Maxwell, Capt. Ralph Banks and Capt.       <description>Yes, I have them.  Many things I have not figured out yet.  My Agnes is not mentioned in will but as I said I have proofed she is a child of theirs.  Right now trying to figure out a strange land sale of one of the Alexander's selling the Anne Sims land.  It dose not look like a sale of descent where it states how the land has descended thru sale. Also the letter that John's brother sent him from Tennessee about the estate of their father proofs that their father is Nathan. Wish I knew Anne's maiden name.   </description>

      <description>Hello Jo,&lt;br&gt;My name is Rosemary Brown Patterson and I am the great-grandaughter of Larkin Brown of Guilford, Maryland.  I might be able to fill you in on some more details about Larkin, or as he was better known Lark or Larkie.  He was a blacksmith but was also a farmer.  &lt;br&gt;He had four children:&lt;br&gt;Lily Brown&lt;br&gt;Ida Brown&lt;br&gt;and&lt;br&gt;Arthur Brown.&lt;br&gt;No one can remember the name of the 2nd son.  He left the area under mysterious circumstances decades ago and was &lt;br&gt;rarely mentioned.&lt;br&gt;Lily married but never had any children. Her husband passed away in some sort of "hospital" and she and her sister Ida lived together for the rest of their lives.&lt;br&gt;Ida never married.&lt;br&gt;Arthur Brown married Mary Boritz, a girl from a local family.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;They had three children:&lt;br&gt;John Albert Brown (born June 1920)&lt;br&gt;Esther Elizabeth Brown &lt;br&gt;Leroy Brown  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I'm sorry to say that of these only Esther and Leroy are still living. Esther never married and lives in Washington, D.C. &lt;br&gt;Leroy had two children, Jacqueline and Hayden.  &lt;br&gt;John Brown was my father and passed away about five years ago.  Even up to his death my dad talked about his ancestors and his childhood and we would urge him to write them down.  But sadly, he never got around to it.  I do know he would be absolutely thrilled that someone is tracing our roots.  He said that some of the family had moved to another state in the 1800's but he thought it was Kansas. There was also some talk about the original Brown's coming to Maryland with a land grant from British nobility. I don't have any details about that except that years ago I saw a very old map of Maryland with the area we live in labeled as "Browne".&lt;br&gt;Lark Brown must have had some standing in the community because a road was named after him. In fact, during the 1960's and 1970's, a lot of Lark's family lived on Lark Brown Road, including my family.  My Grandmother Mary Brown lived next door to our house.  My Uncle Leroy lived next to her.  Great Aunts Ida and Lily lived down the same road about two miles.  The houses and farms are all gone now and have been replaced with an industrial park and an Olive Garden Restaurant.       <description>Hi Jeanne: So nice to meet you. We have several relatives who are admitted to the DAR through family records and a will that I have for Capt. George Martin, listing John Martin, who was the first surveyor of Franklin. Our DAR file goes from my great grandfather Darrell Andrew Martin to William Terrell Martin to John Catlet Martin to Capt. George Martin. The first steps are easy to prove by the census, and the last step is sealed by the will. I would love to compare notes, since if my SAR/ CAR records are good, then by extension so should yours. My grandmother Retha Acree Martin was an excellent genealogist who documented the lines of descent in The History of Stephens County, GA supplementing the information with Southern Families of the Southern US. From my understanding John had a house which overlooked Yonah Lake on the GA/SC border in Stephens/ Habersham County. Do you know where William Terrell Martin is buried?       <description>Hi Jean:  As a lawyer licensed in California, Louisiana, and DC, I can say that legal documents are often difficult to interpret. I am not sure if the original is even in existence. We need to look at the family Bible records. There is too much circumstantial evidence that this is our ancestor== it came out of the mouth of Darrell Andrew Martin before the advent of genealogy records, the grandson of John acc to old records. I even have details of George's service under Col. Williamson: we are related to the Williamsons and Conways and Maysons in Edgefield. Ann Nancy Conway's grandfather was the first cousin of George Washington, and her daughter Adenia Mayson married James Miller whose daughter married Darrell Andrew Martin in Franklin County. Like people marry like people. We need to appeal your denial. Andy</description>

      <description>Hi Jeanne: I think one of the registrars needs a refresher course in law. The will was not written in 1817, but probated at the time of George's death. The language is that the will was "proved." The probate might not have occurred or been finalized until the youngest son reached the age of majority. Just because John is listed in the will, probably written when both George and John were alive, does not mean that George ever even knew his son had died, since he was living in the wilderness, not in the age of cell phones, the internet and rapid communication. If a will is not changed, then the property would pass to the heirs of the listed beneficiary, namely the children of John Catlet Martin. When I took probate law at Duke Law School while a student there, that is what I learned, subject to old SC law. I wish we knew how or why John died. My CAR application had some reference to family Bible records listed and accepted. My tree is Andrew Ayers Martin, also native of Toccoa, and go to the CAR application for George Martin under stories. Andy</description>

      <description>Hi Jeanne: Good to know that since I am upgrading my CAR membership to SAR: the local registrar in Habersham said there would be no problem, but we will see. Our interpretation of the probate was that the will was not probated until the youngest son reached the age of majority, which would have been after the death of George.Many times wills are not changed once written, and if John predeceased his father then he would still be listed. I also have John dying later, I think in 1817. Andy</description>

      <description>Good luck in your search for this!  I have been researching this since the 1980s and find no trace of his grave or real evidende that his father was George Martin of Edgefield,SC.  I also tried to add John Martin as a supplemental to my DAR membership, but was told that there is not enough proof that MY John Martin is the son of George Martin (who was son of Abram Martin).  I am Jean Gaissert, My Great Great Grandfather was John W. Martin.  He was was one of the set of twins born to John Martin and Elizabeth Terrell Martin in Franklin County, Ga.  John W. Martin is buried in Madison, Morgan County, Gerogia.  If you have any questions I might be able to answer, I would be glad to try.</description>

      <description>I know (or thought I knew) all of this and did, indeed, get a copy of Mildred Poole Grafton's application for recent membership. I also have had personal contact with her. She is also from the William Terrell Martin Line.  However, DAR sent mine back saying that since John (Catlet)Martin died in 1811, and (my application said)his  father died AFTER that year, and a John Martin is indeed in George's will (I'm sure you have a typed copy as do I), that he could not possibly be the same John Martin as previously suspected.  Therefore, more proof is needed.  I haved tried ever way I know to prove that, but have hit a brick wall.  It bothers me that there is only a typed copy of George Martin's will.  I wonder where the original could be and have heard some stories about possibilities.  I wonder if the date was transcribed wrong on George Martin's death year.  If you can HELP ME, I would be eternally appreciative.  I have asked Mildred Poole Grafton where the gravesite might be, but she doesn't know either.  She lives in Stephens Co. GA which used to be part of Franklin County, GA.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Now DAR has stated on John Catlet Martin's records that direct lineage must be proven.       <description>Well, that wills were often probated after the youngest reached majority is very interesting and a fact that no one ever told me before!  But is there any way for me to prove that?  My GG Grandfather, John W Martin is here on Ancestry.com (he was married to Elizabeth Cruise/Crews/Crew).  And I have all his children listed - and as you know, names were often repeated and there is George Phillip, John, Elizabeth - all names seen in George Martin's family - so I'm sure it is correct.  I just need to PROVE it - and you just may be my link to do that.  Thanks for your info.  I'm going to mention this and dig a little deeper.  You have (hopefully) given me a new tool to use.       <description>I looked at your profile on this site and see that you went to Emory - my husband (who died last year) was an internist in Atlanta and he went to Emory, also.       <description>Family History has it that John Catlet Martin died from a fall from his horse while his wife was pregnant with twins.  However, I don't have any definite proof of this, either.  But I do have some written things from long ago famly members which says this same thing.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Also, I have proved Simon Terrell, father of Elizabeth Terrell Martin (John Catlet's wife) and have him added as a supplemental.  Do you have this?</description>
