I need information about an orphaned part Cherokee girl who is grandaughter of James and Elizabeth (Shields) Hewitt. She was my great grandmother. All I know is that she was orphaned at three years of age in Gordon Co. Ga and lived with these grandparents who lived nect to Pleasant Watts in Fairmont, GA. Her Aunt Cassie Hewitt Cox took her to MO. after the Civil war where there were reportedly relatives living. She married Jacob Frederick Johnson of Masaac-Johnson Co., IL., and her Aunt Cassie married an Albright man of Union Co., IL. The citizens of Johnson and Union often went over to MO. to work in lumbering. Laura Ann Hewitt had tow sons whom she named Lavador and Ulric. Her father's initials were L.U. Hewitt, but I have no real info about him otherwise. If anyone has info on my wonderful Christian grandmother I would certainly appreciate hearing about anything. She was a member in good standing of the Damascus Baptist church near New Echota, GA.
