I'm trying to interpret an abbreviation on the 1794 Hancock County Tax Digest and need some help.

The digest lists landholders and among other things lists adjoining water courses. Most entries are the names of creeks and are easy to read. But I ran across this abbreviation that I can't figure out: "I.O.G." It is possible that the first letter is an "L."

Does anyone know what water course this refers to?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Regards,

Ralph Poore
Boise, Idaho

I'm looking for additional information on my family. They
came to the Hancock County area prior to it's inception. After the Battle of Kettle Creek they were granted land near Devereaux (mouth of the Shouderbone creek). My grandfather
was born in Sparta, then moved to Savannah where he ran an
elecrical supply business after extensive travel. His name was Gardiner Thomas Simmons Sr. He died of T.B. in 1935.

My great-grandfather owned a store in Sparta,installed
the first telephone service, and was a the Hancock
County Judge in the 1870's to 1880's. He also served in
the 15th GA. Co.E, Sparta volunteers 1861-1865. His name
was J.Clarence Simmons.
Does anyone know the denomination of the church where Berry Peeler was minister? He married John Jones and Martha Mitchell in March of 1845. He is listed on the records as M. G. Any help appreciated. I can trace this Jones family on to other counties in Georgia and Alabama, then to Texas. I don't know what church they attended, so I can'tlocate church records. Jones is a hard name to trace, and I know nothing of Martha's family. So I'm looking to find church records in the hope of locating more on the families.

Lolene

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me find my g.g.granfathers parents. His name was McDonald or Mack Donald Whitehead. He was b. around 1845 in GA. From what I've heard he came from a large family that owned a plantation in GA. In a 1950 census I found his name in a school, and that's about it. Supposedly he ran away from home when he 12 or 13. He then joined the Confederate Army. After the war he went back to find his family, but couldn't find them. He then went to WV and had his family there. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Renee

Melson men in Hancock Co., GA bet. 1800-1820

In the 1820 census of Jones Co., GA there are three Melson men: Cannon, Daniel and Elijah. Daniel in particular has a large family. Cannon has a few children and Elijah seems to be just himself and his wife. Does anyone claim one of these three Melson men as their ancestor? I believe they passed through Hancock Co., GA first, as evidenced by deed records, etc. of Daniel. Daniel was a JP and witnessed many early marriages.I think Daniel died in Jones Co. b/t 1826 & 1830 because his widow Mary [Grace]Melson is listed as HH in 1830 Jones Co., GA. Some may have moved to Coweta Co., GA and beyond.

Sarah Gaulding ca 1800 - ca 1830

I am searching for any information concerning Sarah Gaulding's family who may have lived in Hancock County in 1818.

Sarah Gaulding, b between 1800-1805 and died before 1834, married Nathaniel Griggs in Hancock County 3 Nov 1818. Nathaniel Griggs, b 1800, was a son of Rhodum Self Griggs and Mildred (Milly) Bagley Griggs of Hancock Co., GA. Nathaniel (and presumably Sarah) have no children in the household in the 1820 Hancock Co. census, there are 3 children in the Nathaniel Griggs household in the 1830 Hancock Co census, 2 boys < 5, 1 adult male (Nathaniel) bet 30-40, 1 girl bet 5-10 and 1 adult female (Sarah?) between 30-40. Nathaniel married Cecelia Brant(or Briant) Bridges on 8 Jan 1834 in Jones County. Nathaniel Griggs is in Hancock County in 1840, in Bibb County in 1850, and in the GA State Penitentiary in 1860 (he's our black sheep!). Cecelia Griggs is living in Macon Co in 1860 and back to Bibb County as a widow in 1870 (living with their son Nathan B Griggs. Nathaniel Griggs is presumed to have died in prison, his sentence which began in 1858 was for 10 years. He owned property in Crawford County in 1856, collected general delivery mail in Crawford County, and his court case was tried in Crawford County in 1857. His crime was perjury. He purchased items from the estate of Little Bryan in Macon County in the 1840s and John L Bryan (son of Nathan Bryan) witnessed at least one of the Crawford County deeds. Little and his son Nathan Bryan were executors for John W Bridges estate in 1835 in Jones Co (1st husband of Cecelia Brant/Briant). I strongly suspect a close family relationship betwen Cecelia Griggs and the Macon County Bryan family, but have no proof.

There were two Gaulding households in Hancock County in 1820:
Richard Gaulding
1 male 26-45
2 females < 10
2 females 10-16
1 person engaged in agriculture

William Gauldin(g):
1 male < 10
1 male 26-45
1 female 16-26
1 female slave < 15
1 person engaged in agriculture

Could one of these men (or both of them) be related to Sarah Gaulding?

There do not seem to be any Gaulding/Goulding families in Hancock County in 1830. A William Gaulding is in Elbert Co. GA and another William Gaulding is in Morgan Co., GA. I do not see a Richard Gaulding. I am particularly curious about him because I believe that Nathaniel and Sarah's 2nd son was Richard Griggs and this Richard Gaulding could be his namesake. Hitherto, the first name "Richard" was not particularly a name found amongst the Griggs males and if researchers are correct, the older son was named Rhodum after his paternal grandfather. Richard Griggs married Elizabeth Bryan, grand daughter of Little Bryan, in 1848 not long after he returned from 12 months service in the Mexican War. He was probably recruited by Lt Ed Gaulding in Bibb Co in 1846 (from Macon Telegraph) and Lt Gaulding, soon promoted to Capt., led one of GA regiment companies (not Richard's). All speculation, a lot of dots, very few lines connecting them, help earnestly requested! :-)

I'm planning a trip to Hancock County to look for the old Neel Plantation. Thomas Neel was born in S.C. but moved to Hancock County at an early age. According to my sources he moved into an already existing "Colonial House" and established a fairly large plantation. There is a Neel's Creek in the northern part of the county. I assume that's a good point to start looking, but if anyone had more precise information, I'd appreciate hearing from them.

Am seeking any information on JOHN MILLER HOOD (1843-1906) who married CORNELLIA ANN GARRETT in 1865 in Hancock County. John Miller Hood's father was WILLIAM HOOD (1809-1859) and his mother was MARGARET RENFROE (1828-1870). Need further lineage on William Hood or any of these ancestors. I will happily exchange information. John Miller Hood and Cornelia Ann Garrett were my great grandparents and the parents of ten or eleven children, only five of whom I am aware. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS SO MUCH!
Judy Schrader

Churches in Hancock co Ga in the 1790's

Would anyone know the names of the churches that were in Hancock co Ga in the 1790's. George and rachel Ray transferred to the Powelton Baptist Church, known at that time as Powels Creek Baptist, in 1791. They transferred from an arm of the New Hope Church. I assume that was the New Hope Baptist Church. I don't know where that was. George Ray owned land in Wilkes co ga near Crawfordville Ga. The Powelton
Baptist Church minutes said they transferred from an arm of the New Hope Church. That probaly meant that some members of the New Hope Church started a new church. If I knew where the New Hope Church was in 1791 I would know what area of Ga George Ray lived in. It was probaly in the Crawfordville Ga area in Wilkes co Ga but it might have been in Greene co or Hancock co Ga. Thanks

Boyer History in Hancock County - Descendants of Elias Boyer
My family has recently undertaken the huge task of researching our family history. We are descended from a ex-slave mulatto by the name of Porter Boyer (1845-1925) who resided in Baldwin County Georgia. My family has done quite bit of research on all of the descendants of Porter and his wife Georgeanne (also a mulatto from Baldwin County Georgia). However, we run into some difficulty in finding Porter's mother and father and his siblings. We suspect that he was actually born on one of the Boyer plantations in Hancock GA and later migrated to Baldwin. There are a lot of family stories circulating as to the potential lineage of Porter, however, I suspect if there is a better understanding of the Boyer family history in GA that will potentially answer some of the questions about Porter.

I was wondering if you could share any information you may have on the descendants of Elias Boyer. I am particularly interested in any family history or documentation you may have around the time of 1845 onwards. I have heard stories that Porter and his mother were freed before the war and that he had other siblings (both white and mulatto) but I am looking for the documented proof of this.

I heard that a Susan Muldrow wrote a history of Elias Boyer and his descendants, is that so? Is a copy readily available?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
Matthew Kinchen - 1790s Hancock Co. GA

I'm trying to find more information out on the Matthew Kinchen that moved to Hancock Co, GA from Edgecombe, Co.NC. I have information from "Abstracts of Edgecombe County, N.C. - 1775-1779" that states "DB 8-355 Matthew Kinchen and wife, Eliza(beth) Kinchen, of Edgecombe, Co. to Elias Bryan of Martin Co., Sept. 1, 1795 for 1000 pds. Virginia money two tracts of land: (1) 640 acres of the east side of Swift Creek adjoining Capt. Thomas Bryan, it being a tract granted to Robert Foster by a deed of grant bearing date Nov. 4, 1735, conveyed by deed from Thomas Kearney to Edmund Kearney to William Kinchen; (2) 160 acres adjoining the aforesaid tract, granted to William Kinchen by deed bearing date Nov. 26, 1761. Wit: Frederick Philips, - Bellamy." It appears that Matthew Kinchen sold all his land in N.C. and moved to Hancock Co. GA. as I found the following in "DB 8-762 Matthew Kinchen of Hancock Co., Georgian appointed William Bellamy, Esq. of Edgecombe Co., as his attorney, July 12, 1797, to demand and receive from Jeremiah Hilliard and Jacob Battle, Esqrs. any money they had collected for him. Wit.: Jams.Marks. Proved by the oath of Exum Philips." So, I believe he and Elizabeth were now residing in GA by 1797. I show one refer to Matthew Kinchen and his son, William Kinchen in Hancock Co., GA. I would like to find information that this William Kinchen was the father of Nancy & Elam C. Kinchen of LA., and also the husband of a Mary Golson, then Mary Courtney in 1827, LA. Please email or reply to this message. Jen
