The CUNARD family of Jasper County, GA traces back to the "first" arrival of Germans in America. In 1683 'The Concord' landed in Philadelphia, PA with 33 settlers from Krefeld, Germany. They founded Germantown that year. On board was Cunard ancestor Thones Kunders who naturalized his name to Dennis Cunraeds. The family became Quakers there in Germantown.

Thones Kunders and Elin Teissen had seven children including Jan (or John) Cunrads. John Cunrads m. Alice Luckens and had seven children including Henry Cunrads. Henry Cunrads m. Jane Jones and had eight children including Edward Cunard.
