Hello,

I read your post and I have been researching my family but I came to a standstill with 1880. My g-grandfather was Marshal Mathis born in Lee county about 1866 to a Marshal Mathis and I am unsure of his mothers name. I would like to believe Marshal Mathis in the 1880 census is his father however I can not be sure. My g-grandfather moved to and died in Terrell county, I can trace him until his death in 1922. If you have any information that would be of assistance to me I would greatly appreciate it.

i have the book the history of lee county and it mainly focus on the white families in the area at that time, but it also mention some plantations by name and owner and also listed in the back of the book are cemetery listings and marriage listings which may be helpful. you may want to also look at terrell county for your family. it seems as if some people left lee county and went to terrell county.

I did find a response to a similar question on this message board. Response was from SunniMontgomery@aol.com on 2/22/2003.

The response eleded to the 'Authentic List of All Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the State of Georgia' which is online. It gives some more detail, but no link is provided. I was able to find this easily and to get other information from the Georgia Secretary of State.

Unfortunately my 'fortunate drawer' was not a veteran of the revolution and I am stuck again.

Rachel,
My great grandfather's brother, Virgil Abner Clegg, lived in Lee County. He was a farmer and was elected to the Georgia State Legislature around 1879-1880. Apparently, he also had a store in Lee County and was postmaster in his area -- here are a couple of items from THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION:
THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, April 8, 1888, page 2
Lee County is developing so rapidly that the post office department feels justified in establishing two new post offices in the Redbone district of that county. One has been placed at the old Shackleford place, and will be called Earl, with Frank Mims as the postmaster. The other is at Clegg's store, and is called Quincy, with V. A. Clegg as postmaster.
-----------------------------------------------
From THE DAILY CONSTITUTION, June 6, 1879, page 3, "Roundabout in Georgia" column
---The Sumter Republican learns that Hon. V. A. Clegg, of Lee County, has harvested this year nine hundred bushels of wheat.

Hope this helps.
Pat Landwehr
Re: BARFIELD, Levi & Soloman

Hi, this is in repley to Barfield, Levi Solomon....Many years I ran into stumps and could get nowhere because the Levi that everyone said was the father of Solomon (b) 1811 in NC (m) Elvina Powell died several years before this date. I think 1807. Anyway I finally realized that Cader Barfield on the 1840 census was a brother of Solomon and when I started seraching him I found that the Father of both Cader, and Solomon was Willis, the son of Levi. And their mother was Elizabeth the one listed on the 1840 Census as being born in NC. There are two listings for ladies named Elizabeth Barfield about the same age, one is from S.C. and is the mother of the Macon Barfields, The Elizabeth that is living in the house with Edmond Barfield is the mother of Solomon, Levi that is living next door to Solomon, and Edmond. When I realized this then my family line fit together completely. Hope this helps you.

Like I said before, my information about the Hunters is limited due to my ggrand father passing in 1905. My gmother was born in 1902. Therefore, my gmother was only 3 years old when her father, Eugene Hunter died. My gmother was raised by her mother and step father. I am researching the Hunter side of my family but can only give you information that I find doing research. I only have information about Thelma that I found in the 1930 census. At that time she was still in Lee County, Georgia. This is all the information I have about Thelma.

The Hunter side of my family is very limited. My grandmother was conceived in 1902 and her father, Eugene, died September 11, 1905. She did however, knew his family. The Thelma you are inquiring about is the daughter of Miller Hunter. I don't know what happened to Miller. I can only assume he died before 1920. And you know of course, Georgia did not keep any records of birth and death until after 1919. I found Thelma with her mother, the former Precious Williams, and her new husband, Sam Robinson (Roberson). I found Thelma as Thelma Lee Hunter in 1920 and Thelma Roberson with her mother and step father in 1930. This is all of the information I have about Thelma. You have more up to date information than I have. I never knew, and my grandmother never knew what happened to the Hunters since her father died when she was very young. Sorry I can't be of more help. But keep me posted if you find any information about her descendants. Thanks

I know a little about the Styles who married into the Wright Family. Also, Covin is a name I am somewhat familiar with for my great-aunt married Shep Miles who was related to the Covins. I believe that many are buried in Macedonia Cemetery in Lee County (outside Smithville).

I know only that they originate from GA, county unknown, but their children were: John, Jr., Charles, WARD HOLT JOHNSON, and Luther. All b. in mid 1860's to early 1870's. They moved to AR and are shown on a census in Saline Co, AR. ANY information would be appreciated. Not sure of race, but know there is white, but possibly black or Indian? Thanks so much.
In the 1830 and 1840 census for Lee County, the Nathan Jester family was found. My James Heisler family is also from Lee County. Both families migrated to Coosa County, Ala. and show up in 1850 census. James is married to Telitha Jester, brother William H is married to her sister Mary Caroline and when Mary Caroline and Telitha die, Sarah Jane, a third daughter marries James and raises all three sets of children (hers with James, Telitha's and Mary Carolines. Can anyone suggest where I might look to find info on these two families prior to 1849?
Is there a book on families? tax records or anything? I am having trouble finding printed material on this county.

He married a woman named Mariah and had at least 3 children with her. A son, Willoughby (sometimes listed as William) Grant who was born in 1856; a daughter Eliza Grant born in 1857 and a daughter Hester Grant born in 1863.

If any of these names correspond with the information you have about your family, please let me know.

All the best,

Rachel

Dear Friends,

My family goes back many generations in Lee County, Georgia. I have found a lot of helpful information in the census materials but I am still trying to fill in a lot of blank spaces. My grandparents were Dock Freeney and Ella Lee Harris Freeney. They left Leesburg for Macon, GA around 1915 and then moved to Chicago around 1927. My family surnames include: Harris, Freeney/Frennie/Phreney, Drake, Mackinton/McIntyre, Grant, Hooper, Styles, Stewart, James, Louda, Daniel, Heard, Carter, Middleton, Johnson, Butler, Burton and Covin. For some of the surnames I have a lot of info and for others very little. But I would be very happy to correspond with anyone who recognizes any of these family names. Thank you.

Rachel
Hi Pat,

Thanks very much for this information. It sounds like this may be the connection I'm looking for. Do you know if your great grandfather's brother -- or anyone else in his family -- owned land that perhaps had tenant farmers or sharecroppers? I assume that the connection between the Clegg name and my grandfather's people may have been tenancy, although I'm not sure. I'm hoping to go down to Lee Cty sometime in the spring to do more research. I appreciate whatever info you can share.

Rachel

This is very helpful! Thank you very much. It appears to clear up one prevalent error--That Jane Sheppard Beall married Edward Janes not Edward Jones which is what I have seen on several trees. My grandmother in a family history writing indicated that Jane's parents moved to Lee County, GA. There should be Bealls buried there. Any ideas on researching this or anything else about the Beall name in Lee Co?

I'm looking for any nformation regarding Richard Davis White. I know that he had 2 children born in Lee County 1845 & 1847 and that he went to Henry Co. AL in 1847......I have not been able to find exact birth date, wife's name (mother of the 2 children) If he had any siblings or any ancestor information. I understand that the courthouse burned in 1850 .... If any one could direct me to any other source to search for information it would be greatly appreaciated.
