EZEKIEL DANIEL (ca 1788, South Carolina--1858, Mississippi) married at least three times and fathered 15 children. He was married and living in Georgia before 1820. He was taxed in Williams's District, Morgan Co, GA, in 1817. His second wife was Nancy (Garrett) Bishop to whom he was married in Morgan Co, GA, on 6 October 1827. The 1830 federal census shows him in Morgan County, GA. While a resident of Wood's District, Morgan Co, he qualified for the 1832 Cherokee lottery as a "soldier of late war" (War of 1812). He was a fortunate drawer, winning lot #215, Eighth District, First Section, which became Union Co, GA, but there is no sign of his having ever lived there. A Morgan Co land deed shows Ezekiel Daniel, Senior, selling some of his land on 17 January 1838. On 6 February 1839, as a resident of Pike Co, GA, he sold the land where he had formerly lived in Morgan Co. On the 1840 census he was enumerated in Pike Co, GA. In the early 1840s he moved to Lauderdale County, Mississippi, settling somewhat north and east of Meridian, near the Kemper Co border. His will, dated 24 April 1858, was proved July 1858.
Among his many children were EMILY DANIEL and TEMPERANCE DANIEL.
EMILY DANIEL (b ca 1818, GA) married Madison S Crockett (b ca 1807, GA) on 12 December 1832 in Morgan Co, GA. They resided in Lauderdale Co, MS, in 1850, but had moved to Smith County by 1858 where they appear on the 1860 census. Their children were Martha A, Sophia, Lillian, Mary G, William P, Benjamin F, Frances, Thomas J, Madison, and Elias. In 1829, letters of administration were given to Madison S Crockett in Morgan Co, GA, on the estate of Martha Crockett. His father may have been Elias Crockett from Mecklenburg Co, NC, who was perhaps a son of Archibald Crockett.
TEMPERANCE ["Tempy", "Tempa"] DANIEL (25 March 1821, GA--27 April 1907, AL) married David Archibald Crockett (12 March 1813, GA--1 Sept 1904, AL) on 22 December 1835 in Morgan Co, GA. They resided in Morgan Co as of the 1850 census. They moved to Lee Co, Alabama. As of 1900, they resided in Phenix City, Alabama. Their Crockett children were James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Mary F, Julia D, Cornelia D, Martha ("Mattie") Harriet, Ezekiel Jones, and Margaret Elizabeth. Their descendants appear on federal census records in Birmingham, AL, and Tallassee, AL. In 1829,when letters of administration were given to Madison S Crockett in Morgan Co, GA, on the estate of Martha Crockett, David A Crockett was one of the heirs. Both were buried at the United Church in Salem Co, AL.
These CROCKETTS appear to be descendants of Robert CROCKETT who came over in the summer of 1730 by way of Philadelphia, spent some time in Lancaster Co, PA, and then moved to VA, settling at first a few miles southwest of Staunton. His wife Margaret may have been a DAVIS but this is not proved.
In the 1750s several of Robert's family moved to the area called The Waxhaws several miles above the presnt-day city of Lancaster, SC. The oldest son John was born aboard ship in the Chesapeake Bay before they reached Philadelphia. Archibald and Robert also moved to what is now South Carolina (at the time believed to be part of NC due to a surveying error). But while John's family has been thoroughly traced, sorting out Robert and Archibald's offspring has been tricky.
Elias Crockett's wife may have been Martha ("Patsy") Morrow. From the wills of David Morrow and Martha Morrow, written twenty years apart, it appears that Martha Morrow had married a Crockett by 1810, but neither she nor any children were mentioned in 1830. One reason that Martha Morrow, widow of David Morrow Senior, might not have named any heirs through Martha Crockett could be that she wanted to prevent Elias, by then divorced, from somehow getting his hands on it.
In April 1801, Elias Crockett was bondsman on the marriage bond of Jane ("Jenny") Morrow and Abel Brown in Mecklenburg Co, NC. In 1805 Elias Crockett of Mecklenburg Co, NC, was granted land on Twelve Mile Creek near Sylvester Wyatt and others.
In 1806, Elias, of Greene Co, GA, sells the land to James Potts. Witnesses: James Potts and Frederick Taylor (husband of Archibald Crockett's daughter Mary Ann).
In 1807 an Elias Crockett bought land in Greene Co, GA. He sold at least half of it the same year.
Elias Crockett was a militia captain between 1810--1813 in Morgan Co, GA. He was a Morgan Co, GA, JP in 1810, 1812, 1813.
There is a war of 1812 record for an Elias Crockett in Georgia. Elias Crockett of 2nd Regiment (Jenkin's) Georgia Volunteers and Militia was paid for 28 days provisions. He apparently was to be captain for 6 months but resigned on 9-19-1813. He was replaced by Captain Benjamin Henry. He was at a Camp Hope. He signed with a flourished signature.
In January 1814, an Elias Crockett applied for Letters of Administration on the estate of one Paston in Morgan Co, GA.
Elias Crockett deserted his family; his wife "Patsy" sued for divorce in the Morgan Co, GA, court, in August 1823, which divorce was approved in March 1825. Testimony was that he had left in 1817 or 1819 and had led a dissolute life. He was not named on the 1817 tax list of Morgan Co, GA.
1820 GA Land Lottery: Martha Crockett (widow) of Morrow's District, Morgan Co, wins two lots in Irwin Co (lot 363, section 11 and lot 253, section 13).
Madison S. Crockett and Moses Davis administered the estate of Martha Crockett deceased. Settlements were made between 1831 and 1837. Morgan Co, GA, estate distribution records show heirs of Martha Crockett: Madison S., David A., Benjamin F., William M., Mary A (Mrs Elias Kent), and James M. Crockett. Daughter Martha had died in childhood.
The Crockett Family and Connecting Lines, by Janie Preston Collup French and Zella Armstrong (authors' copyright 1928, printed Bristol, TN), volume 5 of the Notable Southern Families series, is wrong regarding this family. At least two families appear to have been run together in their book. Also, Worth S. Ray's published theories (Mecklenburg Signers and their Descendants, Tennessee Cousins, etc) about the Crocketts have not stood up to modern research.
