Looking for ancestors of Charles Monroe GRANT, b. 22 July 1855 or 1856, Columbus (Muscogee), GA. It is believed 1st Lt. John J. GRANT of Columbus Vols. Co. C 17th GA Regt. CSA,is his father. Mother believed to be Thompson Ann (O'HARA) GRANT of KY who married John J. GRANT 19 Dec 1848, Upson Co., GA. They are listed on 1860 Census in Muscogee Co., Columbus, GA living with children Daniel, 10, Sarah 6 & Charles, 3 and next door to Daniel (60) & Sarah (71) Grant. They owned a lot of land and/or industry in downtown Columbus. They manufactured Confederate uniforms in one of their factories during Civil War. Were involved in business with George Swift in mfg. and building RR's. Sarah GRANT died July 1860, Daniel GRANT married his neighbor, Mary E. HUNGERFORD, a music teacher, 19 Feb 1861. Charles M. GRANT married Jenny/Jennie CHAMBERS in Quitman (Brooks), GA 18 Sept 1879 & appeared on 1880 Census in Quitman, (Brooks), GA He, age 23, She, age 27. They had 2 sons, Robert (10/1880) & Jessie (7/1883). Charles married Sara Elizabeth "Sadie" DENNIS in Brooks Co., GA 29 Dec 1897. They had 6 children: Daniel Richmond (my maternal grandfather) b. 10 April 1900, Mattie Dee b. 1902, Oliver D. b. 29 Jun 1904, Charlie R. b. 30 Oct 1906, Thomas H. 13 Mar 1908 and Clarence W. b. 10 Feb 1917. All four of the younger children died before their 1st birthday & are buried at Dixie, Brooks Co., GA. Charles M. GRANT died 26 Nov. 1934 in Pinetta, (Madison), FL & is buried at Dixie (Brooks) GA.
I found many original GRANT land/deed records at the Muscogee Co. Courthouse Mar 1998 at closing time and did not get to copy. I found these same records at the GA Archives in Atlanta, GA. However, microfilm was not clear enough to read or copy. I believe the Civil War cost the Grants much of their property and holdings. I need to tie Charles Monroe GRANT to his parents & siblings in or around Muscogee Co., GA between 1860 and 1880 when he is living in Brooks County, GA and married to Jenny CHAMBERS.
