CathiCab,

Some Pike County researchers have the parents of John Burnett(e) as Thomas Burnett(e) and Jane (?).

I am not a Burnett researcher, so I don't have proof of either Thomas/Jane or William/Matilda being John's parents. Can you shed some light on how you came to your conclusion?

I am including my file for this family, including notes from James Adams who also researches this family. Any additions/corrections are most welcomed.

Lynn

Descendants of Thomas Burnette

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 BURNETTE He married JANE ?.

Children of THOMAS BURNETTE and JANE ? are:
i. JOHN C.2 BURNETTE, b. 16 July 1823; d. 02 February 1910, Upson County, Georgia; m. (1) MARY FRANCES ADAMS, 10 December 1843, Pike County, Georgia (Source: US Marriage Index 1691-1850 (Heritage Quest), "CD-ROM."); b. Abt. 1826, Georgia; d. Bef. 1854; m. (2) MARY ANN WILLINGHAM, Aft. 1854; b. 22 August 1832; d. 14 June 1909, Upson County, Georgia.

Notes for JOHN C. BURNETTE:
Notes From James Adams:

I haven't taken time to search my records for the documentation, but it is my understanding that this John Burnett was the son of Thomas Burnett and his wife Jane (maiden name?) who were early settlers of Pike County (in the 1820s) their homestead bordering on the Upson Couny line. As noted, John married Mary Adams, daughter of our ancestor David Adams and, thus, sister of our Jeremiah Adams. Two of David's sons, Carter and Reuben, married Marian Burnett and Catharine Burnett, respectively, daughters of Thomas Burnett and presumably sisters of John Burnett. Thus, three siblings, children of David and Mary Adams, married three Burnett siblings. (Note the earlier spelling of the name Burnett was without the "e" ending, and in some instances appears with only one "t."

It should be noted that Mary Adams was John Burnett's first wife. She died rather early, in the 1850s, leaving small children. John then had a second marriage to Mary Willingham and had several children with her. It is the second wife, Mary Willingham, who is buried along with John at Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery in marked graves. If first wife Mary Adams is buried at Antioch, her grave is unmarked. I feel it highly likely that she (Mary Adams) was buried either at the David Adams homestead on Highway 36 some three miles out of Barnesville where I understand there were some unmarked family graves, or with her parents, David and Mary and her sister Celia McKenzie, at the old Salem Cemetery (on Hwy 36) in an unmarked grave.

The Pike County Journal
Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: February 17, 1893
In Memoriam
Our school was made sad on the morning of the 9th inst., when we heard of the death of our school mate, Effie Lou Fincher, who was loved by all who knew her. She was attentive in her studies and had a kind word for all whom she met. She was loved by all her school mates and to say she is at rest is not saying too much. Her influence on the hearts of her school mates was good. She leaves a vacant chair in her school which will be hard to fill as she filled it. She leaves her class mates mourning; she was ever ready to help them with their studies. Little did we think when she left on Friday last when she left that she would never be with us again, but may we all say from the depths of our hearts, "The Lord's will be done." Make us pure and prepare us for the kingdom above and help us to follow Christ as she did. May the Lord comfort her parents, brothers and sisters in their bereaved hearts.
