My GGG GP were William & Nancy Pruitt Boswell who lived across the road from the Matthews Cemetery. I believe they donated land for that cemetery. They sold their home I believe to the Bubkley family. Are you connected to that family. Incidentaly the home is still lived in. We think it was built in late 182o's. The Boswell family moved to Pike Co, AL from Talbot Co. Thx

Amanda was the daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth [--?--] Jenkins. This family moved into Upson County between 1849 and 1851. I have an article I just wrote explaining the connection between P. L. and Amanda, and their youngest child, Nettie Alford, who married Dr. A. M. Jamerson. I'll be happy to share it and the documentation used to prove the connections.

His brother Wright moved to Jackson Co., LA in 1851, He most likely moved with his brother or soon after.

I found info. that Wright passed in 1862 in Jackson Parish, LA and his wife Serena Idlet passed in 1876. I have seen her name as Sarah and Leanora.

Hi,
I found Mary Sherrard Embry buried at Glendale Cemetery in Trinity County, Texas. Her death is shown as 22 Mar 1901.
Thomas Embry died in the Civil War in 1863.
So far I have found two daughters,
Jennie Lula Embry who married David Marion Sanders and had more than 5 children, Lula and David died before 1900 and their children can be found on the 1900 census with their grandmother, Mary Embry in Trinity Co., TX.
The other daughter was Dora Tommie Embry who died in 1944, Angelina Tx.
I have no other info.

Martha B. Fort Boynton, wife of Amos Chapman Boynton, of Talbot Co., GA then Panola Co., TX was my gg grandmother. Her brother, William Fort, is buried next to her in the Boynton plot in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Carthage, Panola Co., Texas. This plot is at the very front of the cemetery at the Cotton Street end and can be seen from Cotton Street.

their daughter lucinda parasade colbert married in talbot co, ga my stephen n allen, son of my/ our henry allen/ elizabeth colbert, who were married in 1816 in oglethorpe co, ga.

per info i cannot confirm, our larkin colbert and my elizabeth colbert allen were the children of our captain nicholas colbert on the 1800 census for oglethorpe co, ga and believed to be related to philip philpot colbert of madison co, ga.

i would be glad to hear from you or anyone interested in our allen, colbert, mcintosh, etc, families.

State: Georgia Interviewee: Owen, George This subject, a "young Nigger" of some eighty or eighty-one summers, now living at 316 - 19th street, Columbus, Georgia, says that he was just a "shirt-tall shaver" when the slaves were freed. "Uncle" George was born in Pleasant Mill District, Talbot County, Georgia, on the plantation, and as the property of Mr. Jim Owen. Me says when the Yankees came, in '65, they "shamed" him awfully for his scanty attire, a one-piece garment or plantation "privilege", made like a"cross between a sack and a shirt", with three holes cut in it - one for the head, and two for the arms, to slip through. "Uncle" George is very black and slow of speech; he is also decrepit and very much interested in the "Tawshun" (Townsend) plan, which he has heard of. Me thinks that all old, indigent people should be paid a government pension, and he importuned this writer to please do what he could to get his name"on the list." "Uncle" George says that he voted a few times after the War, but also said that he didn't know half the time, "who he was voting for", nor what offices the candidates were running. He is a Primitive Baptist, and was baptized by "Uncle" Neg Giddens, a colored preacher of Talbot County and an ex-slave of Mr. Ned Giddens. He believes that the world is getting worse instead of better and blames most of it on education. The more people know, according to "Uncle" George, the "wusser they gits". He also says that the "white fokes ain't gran an liberul lak dey used to be", and he sincerely deplores the general moral breakdown of both the races! As I was looking for information on my 5th greatgrandfather William Roach I came across a William Roach that married a Nancy Gatlin, after William passed she Married a William Shipp. She had a daughter by William Roach by the name of Nancy and maybe a son William. I hope this helps you. This william Roach turned out not to be my relation.

Cemetery notes and/or description:
From Talbotton, Georgia, take US Hwy 80 East for 4.3 miles.
Cemetery is on the left side of the highway.

I put in a request for someone to photograph some of these graves and that person cannot find the cemetery, even after talking to the County Clerk's office. Does anyone know if this cemetery was moved or destroyed? THANKS!

Thanks for posting this as this does give an insight to the area. I am not related to Ms. Pitts, however I do have relatives who were slaves in the area as well. I have heard that the owners of my ancestors were decent and similarly described. However, I don't know that for sure. I would love to hear any and all stories as well. If I come accross anything, I'll share too.

I am not related to Ms. Pitts, however I do have relatives who were slaves in the area. Although their descendants' accounts are not quite as sanguine as hers, I would like to hear more accounts for people who actually lived through the experience. Thanks.

Hopefully you are still active in this site. I am trying to locate the ancestors of my grandmother, Martha Jane Elvira Brooks, her father was A. L. Brooks. I think her mother or her grandmother was Mary Love. Elvira Brooks was 1/4 or 1/2 Cherokee. The names in the Bible are Silas Brooks-4.26.1792, Susanny Brooks-11.10.1792, Elijah Brooks - 8.30.1803. Also there is Pony Hipock 1.20.1776 and Hicmicaya Hipock - 5.14.1772. Pony and Hicmicaya are Cherokee.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Monday Sept. 10, 2012, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church for Mr. Lenton C. Ivey Jr., affectionately know by all as “Skeet.”
Mr. Ivey departed this life Sept. 4, at St. Elizabeth Health Center surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Ivey was born Aug. 23, 1943, in Talbotton, Georgia,(Talbot County) a son of Rev. Lenton C. and Eva Bell Ivey Sr.

He was a 1961 graduate of The Rayen School, Youngstown, Ohio and had attended Youngstown State University for two years.
He was an Army veteran and was a member of Buckeye Elks Lodge No. 73, Farrell Pa. VFW, former member Donald Lockett Post 6488 and was a former Reserve Deputy Sheriff.
He had been employed by General Motors Lordstown Fabrication Plant for over 40 years, retiring in 2006.

Besides his wife, the former Viola “Cookie” Truman, whom he married March 2, 1986, he leaves to cherish his memory, his mother of Youngstown, OH; two sons, Lenton C. III of New York and Butler (Lisa) Johnson IV of Youngstown; a daughter, Valarie Johnson of Youngstown; three brothers, Joe Lewis (Shirley) Ivey of Dayton, Ohio, Michael Randle Ivey and Carl Ivey of Youngstown; two sisters, Gwendolyn “Poncho” (Rocco) Harris of Youngstown and Carolyn (Tony) Uzzle of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Butler, Carisma and Sapphire Johnson, Cheyenn and Tierra Cato, Shajuan Hall, Jasmine Davis and Jayden Johnson; great-grandchildren, Edwin Vargas III and Jarrell Martin.; sisters-in-law, Urania (Charles) Thornton and Wendy Thompson, both of Youngstown; brothers-in-law, Dennay Truman and Winston (Yvette) Truman of Youngstown, George Truman of Maryville, Wash.; his best friend, Eddie Williams Sr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Evelyn Richardson; a brother, Sidney Ivey; his grandparents; and his in-laws, Grover and Connie Nettles.

Copeland - Alex or William Slave Detail

Hello - I am trying to find out any information regarding the Slave plantations of William Copeland who passed in 1859 or Alex Copeland who passed in 1862. I am trying to find out the names of thier Slaves and what happend to them upon their passing. I would also like to find out where these planations were located within their counties. William Copeland was in Harris County, GA and Alex Copeland (Son) was in Flint Hill, Talbot County, GA. I beleive my Great Great Grandfather could have been on one of these plantations. His age matches the age of a male slave on both the 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules of Alex Copeland.

This is the will of Charles Lee Smith, Sr. It lists some, but not all of his children. The document is located in Will Book B, pages 233 & 234 in Talbot County, GA. I believe that there was a daughter named Eliza Smith and another daughter named Elizabeth Mary/Murphey Smith.

In the name of God Amen. I Charles L. Smith, Senr. of the county and state aforesaid being of sound and disposing mind and memory, but warned of the uncertainty of human life do make, publish and declare this my last will and Testament, in manner and form following, hereby revoking all other wills heretofore made by me.

Item 1st.
I desire that all my just debts be paid.

Item 2nd.
I give and bequeath unto my daughters, Martha, Virginia, Laura and Eliza the following lands to wit:
Fraction number three hundred and six (306) containing one hundred and seventy nine and three fourths acres (179 3/4) also Lot number eleven (11) containing two hundred ten and a half acres (20 2/2) NOTE: numeral doesn't match the wording.

They are to have my dwelling and the above described lands at a valuation of ten thousand two hundred and ninety two dollars ($2292.00) it being understood that those of the four daughters named, who are living with me at the time of my death are to hold the property and pay to my daughter Martha the sum of five hundred and seventy three dollars ($573.00) for her share of it and if either of the three shall leave me before my death, she is to receive from those that remain a like sum of five hundred and seventy three ($573.00) dollars for her share. I also give to the four daughters above named, such and so much of my household and kitchen furniture as they may desire at a fair valuation.

I want all my household & kitchen furniture and all my other personal property appraised and if there be any article that one of the legatees under this will is willing to take at the appraisement value, then that or those articles shall remain for the use and benefit of the children who remain upon the place. There shall be no sale.

Furthermore, my wife, Martha Smith, is to have a decent support during her natural life out of the foregoing legacies.

Item 3rd.
I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Caroline the half lot of land known as the Pattillo lot at the valuation of six hundred and six dollars ($606) and that sum of sixty three dollars ($63.00) in money making six hundred and sixty nine dollars ($669.00)

Item 4.
I give and bequeath unto my son, Charles L. Smith Jr. all my tract of land known as the "Owen lot" except sixty four acres (64) already deeded to him at the valuation of six dollars per acre and the amount it comes to over six hundred and sixty nine dollars ($669.00) he is to pay back to my estate.

Item 5th.
I give and bequeath the balance of my estate to my children in such manner that it shall be divided between the six children herein before mentioned, share and share alike on the following condition, to wit: I have heretofore given to my other children, in money and property not counting Negroes) the following sum.

To Ave Maria Thomas seventeen hundred and twenty two dollars ($1,722.00)

To Elizabeth Smith nine hundred and one dollars ($901.00)

To Asbury F. Smith two thousand one hundred and seventeen dollars ($2117.00).

To Simeon G. Smith, two thousand one hundred and five dollars ($2,105.00)

Now then if there should be enough to give each of them as much as the amount advanced to my daughter, Elizabeth, that is to say the sum of nine hundred and one dollars ($901.00) counting the sum of six hundred and sixty nine dollars ($669.00) herein to fore given to each of them together with ninety six dollars ($96.00) given to each of my four daughters, Martha, Virginia, Laura and Eliza, and not mentioned herein, then my daughter, Elizabeth, shall come in for an equal share in the ______ and so on with-the-rest, it being my desire and intention to do justice and give to all alike as far as the amount of property left me will enable me to do so.

1934 transcription of the Bible records for the John Archer, Greer, Glenn, and Charles Lee Smith, Sr. families. I found this at the Georgia State Archives decades ago. I have never seen photocopies of the actual pages. I thought it was very interesting. I know that the Glenn and Smith families are related by marriage, but I do not know any more about the Archer and Greer families.

Daniel Weathers and wife Sarah (thought to be Manley/Malney)were the parents of Sarah Weathers who married William C Burks, making her my gggrandmother. This Daniel lived to be in his 90's.
NOTE: (Date: 20 February 1878
Death Notice of Daniel Weathers.
The notice appeared in the Columbus Daily Enquirer on 20 February, 1878. Apparently Daniel fell and some time later died from the fall.) I have a copy of the newspaper notice.

Daniel and Sarah's children were Stephen, Thomas, Sarah and Francis.

I am descended from the William Bethea and Martha Hawkins marriage also. Were you ever able to go back any further. I was not so lucky in my search. I did find a grave for Martha Ann Bethea in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile County, AL, 1840-1919. Their son Josiah Tillman Bethea was my gr gr gr grandfather. They had Josiah, William, Albert and Mattie. I did not find a grave for William Bethea Sr.

I have found a Francis T. Weathers married Racheal Barksdale in Talbot County, Georgia on Sept. 27,1844. Apparently they had two children - Sarah F. (born 1853) and Daniel R. (1856). Francis and Racheal divorced in Jan. 1861. No other mention of Sarah. Daniel sued to get some property from his stepfather (McCrary) widow. Francis went on to marry Caroline (?). They had two girls - Lanie and Martha Caroline. Martha Caroline was the mother of my great grandmother,Martha Caroline Chipman. Confusing, huh?

I know this post is old but what the heck. I am researching my Wilson line as well and I have some info for you. William Wilson and Martha Ann Ward had 8 children: James R, Kiah, Mary Frances, William Joshua, Martha Rebecca, Walton LaFayette, Zachariah Leonard and Jessie Augustus.

Williams siblings were: Bethenia, Thomas, unknown male, Sarah, Mary Ann and Uriah R.

His parents were Joshua DOB 1782 from NC. and Rebecca 1783

I had set the Mims on the back burner for awhile, because it seemed I was not getting anyhere. I recently dug it out because, I wanted to do a Mims genealogy book for my sister-in-law for Christmas.

Yes, I have a June Hill Mims who was born 1 June 1878 in Webster Parish, Louisiana and died 17 Nov. 1951 in Epps, West Carroll Parish, Louisiana. He married a Bessie Lee Corbin, some where around 1906.

Wow. So glad you are in touch. I've never known or heard from anyone from Hiram's second marriage. All we know is what was in his will. I hope you will share more details with me. I'll be happy to send you what I have. Maybe some clues about Hiram's life and his large family will be helpful.
