Hi Ken,
This is funny. I "know" Brian through e-mail and research. You mentioned a relative who had done this research and not knowing that you were speaking of Brian, I thought someone had found new information. I am always hoping it will happen!!!!
I am still not convinced that John is Nathan's father. Mainly due to the lack of the use of the name in later children. They seem to have a tendency to repeat names and I wonder why not this one??? I don't care who his father is, I just want some proof of someone. I have never found any documentation about Isabel's 2nd marriage, his name, death info, residence, etc. have you seen any?
I started looking for a Berry son-in-law because of the records stating that Isabel left 200 acres in Barnwell Co. to James Berry, a son-in-law, for "goodwill and affection." In the Bamberg Co. Deed Book A, pg 253, deed dated May 16,1801 and another source said it was same book and page but recorded Nov.1, 1802 in Barnwell Dist., SC.
I found the information in the Berry Family Papers in the South Caroliniana Library at the U. of SC in Columbia, SC. The papers are all loose, in a folder.
It says on the 1790 census James Berry, 1 female.
He died in the 1830's. His 2nd marriage was to a Miss____(Winnie?) Bruton, Brewton, Brutin. Their children are: Andrew Berry b. July 7, 1798, m. Aletha Rhode. (A Joseph Andrew Berry was listed as b. June 1, 1876 near Branchville at Orangeburg, and his marriage listed on Oct. 10, 1900 to Fannie Pike. Their chd. were: James Brewton, Richard Pike, & Joseph Andrew Berry. I am not sure where he fits in.)
James Bruton Berry b. 1806 near Branchville, d. Aug 22, 1888, m. Aug 9, 1832, Dicy Rhode and m. June 17, 1878, Sarah Eliza Street. His chdn were: William Nathanial, Benjamin Brewton, John W., Susan Eugenia, Edwin, Joseph, Hebron, Julia, Lillie and Leila Berry.
Sallie b. 1809, m. George Aarons
Celia b.? d. Aug 1883 m. James D. Metts
Winnie b.? m. ___Allen and ____Lane then moved to AL.
Didame b.?
Jane b.? m. Henry Patrick
Isabella b. ?
In one place in the material is says James married a "Miss Bruton" and in another place it says "Winnie Bruton". One of the Berry papers suggests that Isabel's daughter was named "Cecelia" and she did have a child called "Celia". And, James Berry had a niece, "Winnie Berry" which may be the reason the person thought the name of his wife was "Winnie". Other records I have seen say that Isabel's daughter Cecelia married a Mr. Waters and when he died, married Mr. J. Jones.
James Berry's siblings were: Richard, John, Robert and Ann. His father was James also. His mother was Jane Berry. He came to the Branchville Territory about 1768 at the age of 15.
Any documentation for members of the Bruton/Brewton family you may come across I would be interested in seeing.
Thank you.
Carol Brewton Forney
