On 31 March 1993, Ernest W. Seckinger, Jr., interviewed with Boyd and Margie Shook. Boyd stated that Champ "had a long white beard. He walked straight as an arrow and remained active until the end. Boyd remembers him since he would spend a month about with each of his children (Boyd's mother Olivia Powell Shook) carrying his bed in the wagon. Boyd Shook also said that Powell was quite a horseman. All the guys would meet at the courthouse square. He would ride standing in the saddle. He would send Livie (Olivia Powell) and a sister to his bootlegger for a gallon of whisky. She finally tired of his drinking and carousing and moved in with a sister in Rabun County, GA."

Margie Barrett Shook said that her father, William D. Barrett and his brother Rob stayed with Champ Powell the night he died. As they were leaving, near sunup (the last day of 1925), Champ's son O'Dell came by on a horse. Upon being told his father was dead he said he'd have to go up and play Cumberland Gap over him as had been his request.
