The cemetery is atop of a hill behind the Towns County High School football field. There is no public access. One has to walk through the woods to get to it.

FIRST GENERATION

1. Josiah Carter, son of Jesse Carter and Lavina Sams, was born on July 7, 1807 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He died on November 18, 1880 in Towns County, Georgia. He was buried in Carter Cemetery, Bugscuffle Road, Towns County, GA.

He was married to Nancy Beck (daughter of Solomon Beck and Millie Barron) on February 3, 1829 in Rabun County, Georgia. Nancy Beck was born on February 3, 1812 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. She died on June 15, 1880 in Towns County, Georgia. She was buried in Carter Cemetery, Bugscuffle Road, Towns County, GA. Josiah Carter and Nancy Beck had the following children:

10 ix. Jesse Solomon Reese CARTER was born on November 30, 1849. He died on October 25, 1872. He was buried in Carter Cemetery, Bugscuffle Road, Towns County, GA.

SECOND GENERATION

2. Malinda Adaline CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on October 21, 1830. She died on April 21, 1905 in Clay County, North Carolina. She was buried in Ledford Chapel Cemetery, Scrougetown, Clay County, NC.

She was married to Orson Barnard (son of Andrew BARNARD and Martha Angel). Orson Barnard was born on October 14, 1824 in Macon County, North Carolina. He died on June 12, 1876 in Clay County, North Carolina. He was buried in Ledford Chapel Cemetery, Scrougetown, Clay County, NC. Malinda Adaline CARTER and Orson Barnard had the following children:

3. Mary M. CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on November 8, 1832. She died on July 19, 1858. She was buried in Osborn Cemetery, Hiawassee, Georgia.

She was married to James M. OSBORN (son of Jesse Osborn and Cynthia J. Murray) on September 5, 1850 in Union County, Georgia. James M. OSBORN was born on January 2, 1831. He died on October 12, 1899. Mary M. CARTER and James M. OSBORN had the following children:

21 i. Louisa OSBORN was born in 1852 in Union (Towns) County, Georgia.
+22 ii. Jesse William James "Bud" OSBORN (born on November 26, 1852).
23 iii. Herschel D. OSBORN was born on November 10, 1856 in Union (Towns) County, Georgia. He died on December 3, 1875 in Towns County, Georgia. He was buried in Osborn Cemetery, Hiawassee, Georgia.

4. Lucinda Alvira CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on November 30, 1834. She died on January 7, 1907. She was buried in Oconee County, South Carolina.

She was married to Samuel Young JAMESON (son of Benjamin Campbell "Cam" Jameson and Catherine Christine "Kittie" Pope) on September 26, 1854 in Union County, Georgia. Samuel Young JAMESON was born on October 8, 1830 in Sweetwater, Monroe County, Tennessee. He died on April 16, 1863. He was buried in Macedonia Cemetery, formerly Jameson Cemetery, Hiawassee, Georgia.



Samuel Young Jameson III, son of Benjamin Campbell and Catherine Christine Pope Jameson, was born near Sweetwater, Tennessee on Oct. 8, 1830. When he was only two years old his mother died and he was taken to raise by his grandparents, Samuel I and Rebecca Reece Jameson. Following the death of his grandfather in 1836, his grandmother took him and her daughter Rebecca, who later married James M. Howell, to Georgia where they lived with her son Samuel Young Jameson II in the Macedonia community of Union (Towns) County, Georgia.

On Sept. 26, 1854 Samuel Young Jameson III was married to Lucinda Alvira Cater, daughter of Josiah and Nancy Beck Carter of Towns County. For a while they lived in Ducktown, Tennessee where Mr. Jameson was postmaster and general merchant. In course of time he went to war and contracted disease. He returned home and died April 16, 1863. He was buried in the Jameson Family Cemetery, now known as Macedonia Cemetery, east of Hiawassee, Georgia.

Samuel Young III and Lucinda A. Carter Jameson were the parents of two children: Nancy Augusta "Gussie" Jameson (b. 1856) who married W. J. Stribling, and Samuel Young Jameson IV (1859-1921).

On March 25, 1868 Lucinda Carter Jameson married Rufus A. Mathewson (1840-1892), a merchant of Walhalla, S.C. Moving to Westminster, S.C. about the time the railroad was built from Charlotte, N.C. to Atlanta, Georgia, Lucinda kept a hotel next door to her sister Paulina Minerva Haseltine Carter England's boarding house. She died in 1907 and was buried at Westminster. A beautiful stained glass window in the Westminster Baptist Church honors the memory of Rufus A. and Lucinda A. Mathewson.

Children of Rufus A. and Lucinda A. Carter Jameson Mathewson were: Marie (1868-1889), Cora (Aug. 3, 1870-1964) who married Dr. John Gaines, and Rosa who married Clifford Walker, once governor of Georgia. Gov. and Mrs. Walker once owned a home in Young Harris. Walker Street was named for them and "Governor's Mansion Hill" refers to the site of their house and property. (By Jerry A. She was married to Rufus A. Mathewson. Rufus A. Mathewson was born in 1840. He died in 1889 in Oconee County, South Carolina. Lucinda Alvira CARTER and Rufus A. Mathewson had the following children:

+29 ii. Cora Mathewson (born on August 3, 1870).
30 iii. Marie Mathewson was born in 1868. She died in 1889. She was buried in Oconee County, South Carolina.

5. Sarah Rebecca CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on January 4, 1839. She died on February 20, 1880.

She was married to William J. Neville. Sarah Rebecca CARTER and William J. Neville had the following children:

6. Nancy Lavinia CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on October 21, 1840. She died on August 24, 1873.

She was married to Joseph E. Neville on October 4, 1859 in Towns County, Georgia. Joseph E. Neville was born on February 7, 1829 in South Carolina. He died on October 18, 1924 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. He was buried in Oconee County, South Carolina. Nancy Lavinia CARTER and Joseph E. Neville had the following children:

37 ii. Carlie Neville .
+38 iii. Lucy Haseltine Neville.

8. Josiah Caleb Carter (Josiah-1) was born on February 5, 1845. He died on January 6, 1906.

He was married to Louisianna Wyly (daughter of Oliver Cromwell Wyly and Lucy Edins) on July 19, 1865 in Habersham County, Georgia. Louisianna Wyly died in April 1893 in Atlanta, Georgia. Josiah Caleb Carter and Louisianna Wyly had the following children:

40 ii. Maude CARTER.

9. John CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on October 5, 1847. He died on May 22, 1931.

He was married to Jane Rogers. John CARTER and Jane Rogers had the following children:

+42 ii. William Josiah CARTER (born on March 10, 1872).
+43 iii. Frank Hugh CARTER (born on June 25, 1874).
+44 iv. Irene M. CARTER (born on August 26, 1876).

+46 vi. Ralph Caleb CARTER (born on December 22, 1881).

11. Georgia Montaree CARTER (Josiah-1) was born on December 15, 1856 in Towns County, Georgia. She died in 1896 in Oconee County, South Carolina.

She was married to Frank Pendleton Gaines. Frank Pendleton Gaines was born in 1859. He died in 1890 in Oconee County, South Carolina. Georgia Montaree CARTER and Frank Pendleton Gaines had the following children:

+51 i. Ashtabula Gaines (born in 1878).
+52 ii. Maude Gaines (born on March 29, 1880).
+53 iii. Mamie Gaines (born in 1882).

She was married to John E. Gaines.

12. Paulina Minerva Haseltine Carter (Josiah-1) was born on March 4, 1835 in Union (Towns) County, Georgia. She died on April 15, 1901 in Oconee County, South Carolina. She was buried in East View Cemetery, Westminster, SC.

She was married to William Jasper England (son of Martin England and Elizabeth Carroll) on October 18, 1855 in Union County, Georgia. William Jasper England was born on March 18, 1834 in Union (Towns) County, Georgia. He died on November 2, 1870 in Towns County, Georgia. He was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Hiawassee River, Towns County, Georgia. Paulina Minerva Haseltine Carter and William Jasper England had the following children:
