DR. J. M. BUCHAN
After A Long Illness He Passes Over The Silent River.
What man, woman or child is there in Dodge County---what man is there in any of our surrounding counties who fails to recognize the above noble face' ( Note: A picture of Dr, Buchan accompanied the article.) And , gazing upon it, what person is there who cannot say that there is a face that belonged to one of the best, noblest men who ever breathed the pure fresh air of Heaven?
When it was announced some two months since that Dr. Buchan had been stricken with paralysis, a gloom was cast over the entire town and country and hundreds of deeply sympathetic friends flocked to his home. The best of medical skill was obtained and everything possible done for his relief, though it was known from the first that he could not possibly survive the shock.
Death came Friday morning last at 7:00 o'clock. The funeral was preached at the Christian church ( of which Dr. Buchan was a leading member ) by Rev. Mr. Thomas, of Atlanta, at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, after which the remains were taken charge of by the masons, and followed by a large concourse of people in carriages and on foot--every business house in town being closed --- were carried to the cemetery and interred with masonic honors.
Dr. Buchan introduced the bill in the legislature giving the county the name of Dodge, therefore he was the father of Dodge County, and a dear good father he was too, for to know him was only to love him.
We are in a position to deeply sympathize with the bereaved wife, children, relatives and friends, for the death of Dr. J. M. Buchan our senior feels that he lost one of his dearest earthly friends.
Peace be unto his ashes.

A. G. WILLIAMSON DIED FRIDAY NIGHT.
Hon. A. G. Williamson, for fifty years one of Dodge County's prominent citizens, died at his home in the city Friday night about nine o'clock, following an illness of more than a year, during which time he was practically an invalid.
Mr. Williamson's body was embalmed by J. W. Peacock Co., undertakers, and according to instructions previously given by him, was deposited in a vault at Orphans Cemetery at sundown Sunday afternoon. This vault, above which rested life-size statues of Mr. Williamson, Mrs. Williamson and J. Gould Williamson, a nephew and adopted son,, was erected by Mr. Williamson about fifteen years ago, and full directions were given by him as to the disposal of his body at death. The body, lying on the left side, reposed on a cedar cot, which had also been provided by Mr. Williamson, and in this position was deposited in the vault. The funeral service, which was conducted by Rev. Frank Adams, of the Christian church, consisted only of scripture reading, prayer and two songs. The scripture was from the 14th chapter of St. John, the second to fourth verses, inclusive. The songs " I Shall Know Him, " and "Asleep jn Jesus, " were rendered by a double quartet composed of O. V. Lashley, Henry Manley, Robert Bennett, Mrs. Jeter A. Harrell, S. H. Goolsby, H. E. Dickens, John Parkerson, Mrs. C. F. Coleman. The active pallbearers were the following: W. Fitzgerald, W. H. Smith, C. F. Coleman, C. H. Peacock, R.G. P. McKinnon, C. C. Burch. An honorary escort was composed of C. D. Phillips, W. J. Deffinall, C. B. Murrell, J. H. Rogers, W. W. Puett, J. C. Wall. The floral offerings were banked about the mausoleum in abundant profusion and were magnificently beautiful. A throng of about one thousand people was in attendance.
Mr. Williamson was born in Columbus County., N. C., and was 71 years old August 1st. He came to Dodge County 52 years ago and secured employment as woods-rider for Coleman & Sessoms, a naval stores firm. Soon afterwards he was married to Miss Mattie Buchan, daughter of Dr. James Buchan, by whom he is survived. Being a man of keen and accurate judgement, he early realized the value of lands in this section of Georgia, and through this judgement and his untiring energy, he acquired as the years went by, 8,000 acres of Dodge County land, also large holdings in Eastman city property and government bonds. His estate is valued at between $400,000 and a half million dollars. Several months ago he deeded a large part of this property to relatives, his wife and adopted son being the principal beneficiaries.
Mr. Williamson united with the Christian church when quite a young man, and as long as his health would permit, took a very active interest in its affairs. He built the Christian church at Orphans and was an important factor in the erection of the Christian church in Easdtman. To both of these institutions he was a strong pillar and liberal contributor.
Mr. Williamson was Ordinary of Dodge County two termas, beginning about 1895. His administration of this office was amrked by splendid efficiency and admirable economy, he rendered to the people the same fine business management that characterized his personal affairs.
Mr. Williamson's life and character constitute a remarkable demonstration of waht a man may accomplish through the exercise of economy, energy and industry, coupled with the practice of hat rigid honesty and justice that marked all of his transactions.
Compiler Notes: Albert G. Williamson, a Dodge County entrepreneur, donated land for a burial place in Orphans community following the death of a neighbor's child, George P.A. Barnes, in 1887. The community was named in honor of the six orphaned Williamson brothers who moved here in 1873-74 from North Carolina. The earliest burials were children of the Thomas, Weldy, and Lashley families. Other common names in the original acre are Hardy, Manley, Steele, Stuckey, and Williamson. The statuary mausoleum depicts A.G. and Martha Buchan Williamson and their nephew, Jay Gould.

DR. T. J. BUCHAN KILLED BY HIS SON.
On Sunday morning about 8:30 o'clock Dr. T. J. Buchan was shot and almost instantly killed by his 17 year-old son, Ogletree, at their home in the heart of the city. Only one shot was fired, this taking effect in the left breast and passing through the heart. The shooting took place in the house and very few people heard the report of the pistol, but the screaming of the children attracted the attention of neighbors and those standing in the streets, who hastened to the Buchan home to find out the cause of the alarm. Dr. J. B. Clark and Mr. Sidney Hargrove were the first to reach the scene. Dr. J. D. Herrman came next and soon the house and yard was thronged with people.
Dr. Clark says he found Dr. Buchan lying on the floor in the hall with blood flowing from his chest; Ogletree was kneeling over his dying father weeping, and as soon as he saw the doctor begged him to do something for his father, telling the doctor that he had shot his father in protection of his mother. Drs. Clark and Herrman both state that the wounded man breathed or gasped only a few times after they arrived. He must have been dead in less than ten minutes after the shooting. In a very short time Dr. Monroe Buchan, brother of the dead man, arrived, and at his request Dr. Herrman located and cut out the bullet, finding it just under the skin about four inches below the right shoulder blade. This shows that the ball ranged slightly downward and from left to right, and indicating that the pistol was fired in front of and to the left of the wounded man.
The circumstances which led up to this terrible Sunday morning tragedy have possibly been in progress for years. When sober Dr. Buchan was a genteel, polished man, and it is said was very kind to his family, but he had become addicted to the use of whiskey and opium and when under their influence has often threatened to kill his wife and other members of his family and has driven them from home. Some time ago he went to Atlanta to take a course of treatment under Dr. Wooley in the hope of his condition being benefitted. It seems that since returning from Atlanta he had some correspondence with a woman with whom he became acquainted while there, which Mrs. Buchan discovered and to which she very much objected. This was probably the immediate cause of the tragedy.
Sunday morning Mrs. Buchan sent their little boy, Tom, to the postoffice for the mail. When he returned he brought a letter addressed to his father, and a circular, which he handed to his mother. She handed the circular back to Tom with the request to give it to his father, but to say nothing about the letter. Some of the children, however, told their father about the letter and he at once demanded it. Mrs. Buchan refused to give it up, whereupon the doctor became enraged and announced that he would "have it or kill everybody on the place and burn the house down." Mrs Buchan walked into her room and secured the pistol, intending to hide it she claims so that her husband could not secure it. He followed her, however, overtaking her after she secured the pistol, and as she entered the bedroom of her son, Ogletree. A scuffle here ensued, during which she called to Ogletree, who was in his night clothes, having not arisen from bed. He jumped up, secured a pistol from under his pillow and went toward his father and mother. When in a step or two of them he fired, claiming that he believed his father was trying to kill his mother.
Mrs. Buchan ran from the house to Mrs. Armstrong's and hid the pistol. She says she thought it was the pistol she had that fired accidentally, and that she did not know Dr. Buchan was shot until she returned.
Dr. Buchan walked out into the hall. where he fell, and was dead Ina very few minutes.
Coroner B. J. Tripp was notified at once. He arrived in Eastman about 4 o'clock and held an inquest.
Following is the evidence in full as brought out at the inquest and taken down by Stenographer Herrman Milner for the Times-Journal.
Compiler Notes: I am omitting this lengthily item and merely stating is was ruled thus: "That Dr. T. J. Buchan came to his death by a 32 calibre pistol in the hands of his son, Ogletree Buchan, and the same is declared justifiable homicide."
The last paragraph is the burial and I quote" The body was interred in Wood lawn Cemetery Monday afternoon, Rev. M. H. Massey, conducting the burial service. The scene at the grave was one of the saddest ever witnessed in Eastman, and we doubt that there was a dry eye in the entire throng that attended. The sympathy of our whole people goes out in deep feeling to all who have been bereaved by this awful tragedy.
Mrs. A. G. Williamson, the only sister of the deceased, is with her husband in North Carolina. Numerous telegrams were sent and every effort possible made to acquaint her with the sad news in time to reach her brother's burial. But for some reason the telegrams did not reach her and she was not here."
