I think Bill Ricks of Soperton can help you. His blog spot is http://billricksofsoperton.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.h... He even mentions a Clark's Bluff photo but I could not find it by going to several links. He helped me once on long ago Glenwood High School photos.

Also, Harry Clark of Glenwood at (912) 523-5388 probably can help; he's a top notch fisherman and probably knows the whereabout of the bluff.

Incidentally, there are several Clark's Bluffs in GA. btw I found one reference related to river traffic commerce back in 1915 that stated the distance between Ball's Ferry amnd Clark's bluff was 86 miles. Ball's Ferry is up near Tombsboro (above Dublin.) I assume it meant meandering river miles, which puts it down in Wheeler Co.

I apolized for not answering earlier, but for some reason the auto. notification for the website must not be working.

It's possible that Jerry Norman Brown had a brother named Raford, if son then he is not listed by that name on any of the census. Do you have the names of Raford's wife or children.

What I do have is that Raford Brown is Jerry Norman's father.
I have a Jerry Norman Brown, born 1890, as son of James Raford Brown (1840-?) and Elizabeth Walker (1848-?).

James Raford Brown (March 1840-?) as son of James Brown and Neoma Clark.
1880 Montgomery Ga census;Dist 393
James Brown 35; Elizabeth 23;John, 12; Jessey 10, Nancy 9, Eliza 2 Mary 8 months
1870 Montgomery: James Brown 27; Elizabeth 20; John W l; Jesse 3/12;Nancy E Barbee 10
1860 Montgomery: James Brown 55, born SC; Samuel W 22, Radford 18; Nancy J 17
1850 Montgomery James 45, born SC; Omy 54; Elizabeth 14; Samuel 13; Jesse 11; James R R 9;
:1900 Dodge; Clark Dist page 348b
255 255 Brown, James ?, March 1840 60 married 33 years, father born NC
Elizabeth, wife July 1848, ??, 12 births ll living
Mary, dau Dec 1883 17
James M, Sept 187? 22 and 21 both written in
Josephine, dau March 1884
Maggie, dau Oct 1888 ??
Jerry N, son June or Jan 1890 10 [WW I registration-birthdate unknown Jerry Norman Brown]
Hester A, April 1892 2
Living next door to a James ? born 1875
.

Hester Brown,(Nov 3, 1890-Nov 3, 1939) dau of James Radford Brown, Married John Jackson Watson.

1930 Dodge County GA; Clark Dist
111 115 Brown, J Norman 40 first married at age 23
Tommie, wife, 40 first married at age 23
Vastee, dau 15
Arline, dau 12
Hazel dau ll
Marion, dau 9
Virie M, dau 6
Moena, dau 4 3/12

Jerry Norman Brown had a dau to married Hez Pope.

Bernice

You do have a puzzle on your hands. One which you probably wont solve.

If the census data is correct, and remember that often it's not, it would appear that Mary Jane Wheeler, wife of Thomas Moore, had at least one dau and possibly two before her marriage to Thomas Moore.Katie and maybe Mary J Wheeler.
Mary J Wheeler is listed as step dau on the 1910 census and
from the ages listed Katie is also probably a step dau.

Edward D C Wheeler is listed as son with Katie on the 1920 census. But is Katie also the mother of the step grand chilren listed on the 1900 census (Nellie, Effie?). It would help if Mary Jane was found on the 1900 census.
Katie, Roxanna and Nellie are living the the Moores in 1900 and in 1910 Mary J, Nellie, Effie and Edward D C are with the Moores.

As to the very long name of Nellie, I would dismiss it as family lore.

1910 Habersham
136 139 Dover, Omer, 24, married 5 yrs
Roxie, wife, 23; 3 births 2 living
Lethie, dau 4
Annie or Arnie, 10/12
Effie is not married and living with Moores in 1910. In 1920 she is married to Virgil L Stewart with children, Leroy and Louise.

There was a Della R??? Dover born April 23, 1925 and died Mary 31, 1926 in Habersham; father Omer Doverl mother Roxie Moore; informant Dewey Dover.
Rollylee Dover, male, born Dec 11, 1922 and died Dec 26, 1923; father Omer Dover; mother Roxie Moore, informant Dewey Dover; burial Ebenezar? Cem.

There is an Effie M Stewart buried at Hills Ctossing Cem in Habersham; Feb 9, 1902- Aug 12, 1991; also Virgil Stewart and Nellie W Purdy are buried there.

Good luck in your seach.
Bernice
PS no connection to family, I juts love a puzzle.

This family is very, very confusing! This is what I have heard word-of-mouth from my mother and my grandmother:

Nellie Alice Wheeler (They say her full name is: Nellie Alice Sara Lobecca Katie Virginia Pokey Sho Wheeler) How's that for a long name? (Nellie's father: Sydney Franklin, mother: ??Katie O???)

Nellie Alice's 1/2 sisters:
1. Roxanna (Roxie)Dover (father: D. C. Wheeler) and
2. Effie Stewart (father: last name was GRANT)

Nellie Alice's mother, went to hospital to have goiter removed & bled to death)

Nellie Alice Wheeler Purdy married Phillip Pine Purdy(*) and had the following 8 children (oldest to youngest):

Lora Bell Purdy Dover (Winford Clarence) MY GRANDPARENTS!
Minnie Lee Purdy Hunter (Corbett Jr.)
Geraldine Purdy Holbrook (Roy Alexander)
John Gorden Purdy (Ethel Burel)
Phillip Junior Purdy (never married)
Hoyt Purdy (Aline Wilburn)
Theodosha Purdy Queen (Jack)
Elizabeth Murdes Purdy Ivester (Ray)

I have Phillip Pine Purdy's(*) parents as: John Pine Purdy and Hannah Underwood Purdy. We thought Hanna's mother was "Katie Moore" who is said to have had alot of children by different men that she never married!

John & Hannah Purdy's 8 children are:
1. Phillip Pine Purdy (Nellie Alice Wheeler)
2. Roy A. Purdy
3. Stanton Purdy
4. Haskell Purdy
5. Cranford Purdy
6. Boyd Purdy (in Johnson City, TN)
7. Mae Purdy (Married Mr. Key of Gastonia, NC)
8. Thurston Purdy

Is this info any help?
Looks like you are right about Nellie, Effie and Roxanne being sisters. I also have a fourth sister listed as LEATHEY MOORE (she was a half-sister)which could be "Lizie J"?? Let me know what you think as I'm still trying to unravel our history!!

James Montgomery Perdue, was a "Jr.", , he and his wife are buried in the Alamo cemetery and was born in Jefferson county, ga. His parents and grandparents are buried near Stapleton, Ga. His greatgrandparents were William and Judah thompson Perdue. James Jr and Virginia moved to Wheeler county, Alamo area, about the same time as his cousin, my greatgrandmother and her husband did.

You may find the following information useful.

Perdue Records from cemetaries
Jefferson county, GA

The cemetery is near the old home place.

This is from the James Perdue Cemetery:

Directions: Martin Stapleton Rd #66 west of old Stapleton/Perdue house place, in field at crest of ridge about 100 yards from house.

James Perdue. b. 1780 d. 1844 (Note, James T.)
s/o William and Judah Thompson Perdue

Mary Elizabeth Montgomery 1781 d. 1873
w/o James Perdue

James Montgomery Perdue Sr. b. 1815 d. 1861
h/o Permelia A. Dec 16, 1882 d. Aug 21, 1883
/o James M. Perdue Jr. and Virginia E. Douglas

Amelia E. Perdue b. Nov 27, 1878 d. July 24, 1895
d/o James M. Perdue Jr. and Virginia E. Douglas

Family connections to me: James M. (Jr) and Virginia Elizabeth, had a son, William Henry Perdue, who married the sister-in-law of Susannah Wylanta (Lantie) Perdue Anderson (see below, her husband’s sister). Her name was Savannah (Vannah) Anderson Perdue. Vannah Anderson Perdue and William Henry Perdue (he was always called by both names) are buried in Plant City Fla.
My great grandparents are Susannah Wylanta Perdue and Andrew Marcus Anderson are buried near James M and Virginia and I they were second cousins, but married people who were related to each other (he was her cousin and husband's brother in law).

My g-grandmother, Susannah Wylanta Perdue Anderson (Lantie) (1858-1932), see below for Perdue line, married Andrew Marcus (Marcus) Anderson. Savannah Anderson/Vannah, William Henry's wife, was his sister. They are also was from Jefferson county and lived very near to your James M. She was the daughter of William and Mary Ann Rivers Perdue (granddaughter of John and Martha Perdue, g-grandaughter of William and Judah Thompson Perdue).

The only family I actually knew from the James Montgomery Perdue line was James jr and Virginia's son, the above William Henry Perdue, cousin on Perdue side and married to my grandfather Anderson's sister, Vannah. He worked for the Highway Department in Florida building roads. I think he knew by heart every road in the state. I have photo of Uncle William Henry on a horse. He was a big square bult man. In later years he was an amputee and was wheel chair bound. Both he and Aunt Vannah were a joy to be with.

Lantie Perdue did have a brother named James M TOO! He married Dena McGahee.

So the James Montgomery Perdue line would be:
William Perdue b. 1767, d. 1825 and Judah Thompson b. 1791, d. 1843

James T. There have been some recent postings on ancestry.com indicating that james Montgomery Perdue was the father of James A. Perdue of Macon, b. 1822. I do not believe this to be the case, though I would NOT doubt kinship.

was my grandmother's (Mary Catherine "Kate" Clark McDaniel) oldest brother and first married my granddaddy's (John W. McDaniel - Kate's husband)sister Bertha McDaniel who died in 1908. Of their 4 children Willie L., Eunice V., Etta Mae and Clayton F. I'm looking for information on Eunice and Clayton F; I'm okay with Willie and Etta Mae who I knew growing up in Glenwood. His second wife was Amanda Gillis b. 1875 d. 1959. In either the late 1940s or early 1950s Uncle Clayton lived alone, I believe, in a house way back in a field between (big)Branch road and Oakwalkee Creek. The info I'm seeking is: who were Amanda's parents and did she and Clayton live separately in their later years?

Clayton W. is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery with Bertha on his right and Amanda on his left.
Mobley Cemetery, Wheeler Co

Does anyone know anything about the Mobley Cemetery in Wheeler Co? I believe there are McArthur's, Bones, Sikes, and Clements buried there.

On 4/20 hoping to take photos I tried to locate Mobley Cemetery using the directions I found on one of the boards: located s. of the Lumber City-Bell's Ferry Rd near the intersection with the road that goes to Glenwood GA; this is just inside Wheeler Co. Not finding a cemetery we went back to Lumber City and found a lady who remembered a cemetery there; she was nice enough to call someone she knew would know. The lady she called said all she knew was that a couple of years ago a lumber company came in and destroyed the cemetery.

Do I have the correct location of the Mobley cemetery? If I do, then the cemetery is no longer there. If a lumber company came in as the lady said, is it possible they moved the cemetery?

I really hope I have the wrong directions and it's not the case that the cemetery was destroyed.

Mary

Mary:
I do not. I got the maiden name from the death certificate of Ezra Clyde Foskey. This is what I know:
I have an Ezra Clyde Foskey, born 4-19-1913 in Wheeler County and died 1-8-1975. He lived in Glenwood, Wheeler County. His parents were James Foskey and Lula Scarborough Foskey. He is buried in Beulah cemetery in Wheeler County
In the 1910 census in Landsburg, Montgomery County (this became Wheeler County in 1913) a Lula Foskey, age 25 and widowed is living with three children, Bertha M. age 8, Coot/Curt (?) age 5, and Ola M.age 3. In the 1920 census Lula Foskey is in Landsburg, Wheeler County age 34 and divorced, with two children, Mellie, age 9 and Ezra age 6 (the Ezra above). From this, it is not clear if she was widowed or divorced.
In both the 1910 census and 1920 census, Joseph M. Foskey is a close household, either next household or a couple away.
I have not found a death certificate for her. I suspect she may have remarried. If you post your email, I will be happy to send you a copy of the death certificate.
Jim Carroll
williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net

Thanks for the tip. The James H. Foskey in the 1900 census married Penny Stirling/Sterling in 1909, so I do not believe this James is him. Lula is also in the 1920 census, close to Joseph M Foskey and his third wife, Laura.
There is probably a relationship in this mix I need to figure out.
Jim Carroll

I would check with the courthouse(person who registers deeds) and see how far their records go back. Do they have the records for what is now Wheeler, but original in Montgomery?
Bernic

I don't know where Frances is buried, but here is some census data that might help connect her to the correct Hall family.

On the 1870 Montgomery County Ga census there is a John Hall age ll living with Frances and Bright Butler. The same (or I'm assuming same) John J Hall is living with her in 1900 and there he is listed as son:
1900 Montgomery Cty Ga
Butler, Frances, Aug 1834, 65; widow; 9 births 6 lving
Martha L, dau, Mar 1870 30
Samuel A, son June 1871 28
Hardy, son, April 1873 27
Mealy, dau, Oct 1876 23
Hall, John J, son, Feb 1859, 41, widow; Ga/Ga/Ga
, Elvina, g.daugher, May 1889 11
This may be the Elevenia Hall who married G C Davis of Orland Fla in April of 1904 in Montgomery County.

This may be Frances Hall;
1860 Montgomery Cty Ga
298 298 J B Hall 26
Frances 25,
John l

An estate sale is advertised for the property of the late James B Hall on Oct 17, 1871 in Montgomery by John White; the same issue of the newspaper has John White making application for the guardianship of John Hall, a minor of James B Hall, deceased. In Aug of the same year Bright Butler had applied for for letters of administration on the estate of James Hall, deceased.

There was a James B Hall who married Francis White in Laurens Cty on June 11, 1857.

There is this Frances White that matches dob:
1850 Laurens Cty Ga;
1850 Laurens:
604 604 John White 45
Martha 41
Frances 16 (listed as male) (not in hh in 1860)
Martha 14
Albigal 12
Ceclia 9 (Amilla on 1860 census)
Elila 6
John 5
Rebecca l

Bernice

My acreage in Wheeler county is in land lot (LL) 233. How large are land lots? Are there records showing individual ownership inside each LL back to, I assume, when the lotteries were held? I would like to know the history of the land I own. I do know it belonged to my granddaddy John W. McDaniel (b. 1886, d. 1937). It seems that it may have belonged to his daddy John James (JJ) McDaniel (b. 1852, d. 1887) and his wife Rebecca Elvinne Sears McDaniel became the owner at JJ's death and probably later gave it to her son John W. above. I would like to know also where was the "home place" of John James' daddy Jeremiah McDaniel (b. 1828, d. 1903).

Under findagrave under the heading Find Graves select the 2nd one "Search for a cemetery." Then click on "browse by US county" then select Georgia then select Wheeler county. Select Mobley, although no interrments are listed it does have a map, whihc you can study. It appears though you may have been to that location.

My sister Janice two years younger than me graduated in 1954, brother Ted 1950-1962, and younger brother Greg started at Glenwood in 1955 or maybe '56, but graduated from Mt. Vernon because Glenwood High closed sometimes before his scheduled graduation. I'm attaching my 2nd and 3rd grade school pics (Ms. Grimes and Ms. Babb were the teachers), a photo (CE172) of our Ag. officers about 54 or 55 (standing - I'm at the left, Gerald Avery, Mr. Stevens, Gary Maddox, sitting Jimmy Fields and "Little" Foy Kent (died in a work accident in 1965), a photo of Clara Lee Bridges that appeared in a GA mag. in 2005, my 11th grade picture (I'm in the middle standing fith one from Ms. McGregor (died in the early 90s), at least six students in this picture have passed on), and my 1949-50 school picture. Hope to hear more from you.

Just where is the Old Wheeler County School?" I went to Glenwood High School with Bobbie Nell; she graduated in 1955 and I graduated in 1956.

Thank you Brenda. This certainly looks like a possibility, except my father's name was William Ira, but he did have a brother named Truit & another called James. The ages also fit the parameters. I'm not sure about the other siblings, as my mother did not know much about him.

Thank you so much, this is the closets I have come to tracing his family.

Betty
