Thanks so much. Your reply is wonderful and timing is fine with me. I do ancestry stuff in spurts and always get excited about new finds. My husband and I want to visit these graves ourselves and hope with the info you gave we can complete this journey.

Sorry that due to family illnesses it has been months since I've been available to post reply.
Attached is photo of John Milner husband of Elizabeth Godwin grave. It is located on a cattle farm owned by the Bridges family in Oglethorpe County GA. Milner Brook runs just to the east of the family cemetery which is enclosed in a chain link fence. It is out of sight of the road and you need permission from the current owner to go to the cemetery. I do not have phone number but Homer Cooper carried me to the grave in 2005. Photos attached.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am looking for information on James J. Harman.

A man by the name of J.J. Harman was in the 1850 Federal Census for Wilkes County.

A James J. Harman appears in the 1870 Federal Census for Thomas county as a Dry Goods Merchant.

I suspect it is the same person; the ages match up, the daugther's name and age match up, and his occupation is as a merchant.

I suspect he lived in Catoosa County for a short time in late 1860, after the census was taken, to about 1862 and was in the war from a company there. He did not appear in the 1860 Federal Census for Catoosa County.

He nor a widow filed for a Georgia Confederate Soldier's or Widow's Pension.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Respectfully,

Gerald D.
Hope you get this. William and Hannah Walker Kelly/Kelley were my ancestors also. Our old fam. members said she was Indian, prob. Creek. I think her son William was in Bladen Co. NC,then in Early Co. Ga approx. 1817. His son,Samuel Seaborne/Sebron Kelly/Kelley was my gggrandfather. My gdad, James Pitts, started researching our Native Amer. ancestry in the 1950's when the gov. started remunerations in the south AL and NW Florida area. After he died, I continued his research and have found intermarriage with the Moore family probably in Early Co. I am particularly interested in Wm. H Kelly/Kelley in Coweta Co. who petitioned for lottery land for orphans of William Killey(spelled with the letter i instead of e) through their father's Rev. War service.
I would love to communicate with you further.
Donna

Dot,
I'm searching for the mother of Margaret Lyle who married John O Hackney. I believe Margaret is the sister of my
4g-grandfather, James Lyle b. 1828 d.1864 in civil war. He is buried on family land. Their mother was Elizabeth Lyle(b.circa 1800) who lived into the 1880's. In the 1880 census she is living with John and Margaret's daughter, Emilene and Emilene's husband, A.C. McKenny and is listed as 86 yrs old.

Do you know if Elizabeth Lyle was a Finley? I cannot find where she was buried either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Dottie

I am a direct descendant of Ann Blair, daughter of Hugh Blair Jr. and Mary (Polly) Lee aand granddaughter of Hugh Blair Sr and Jemimah McCarty.

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel’s daughter Olley (Olive)

Evidently Daniel’s brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel’s daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters.

There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820’s. and he went west while my McCarty’s migrated southwards.
I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius’ of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven’t worked that out yet.

One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty’s in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I’m not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating.

I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty/Blair Family.

Thanks.

Phil Strause
James Lyle (Sr.) died around 1830 and left Elizabeth a widow for more than 50 years. I am looking for Elizabeth's maiden name. She states on the 1880 census that her parents were born in Ireland. Stephen Evans named one of his sons Stephen Evans. Also, "Trading" John Evans named one of his sons Stephen Evans. All of these Stephen Evans' lived in Virginia in the 1700's.

This is not my direct line but I am trying to expand my information on the Evans line. Also, I have a ton of relatives who lived in Georgia in the 1800's on my mothers side.

Do you have any further information on the Stephen Evans Jr. whom you stated was born in 1741 in Virginia. I have traced some of the descendants of a "Trading" John Evans to Edgefield County, SC and Burke County, Georgia. There are several Stephen Evans's in the family. The same names run through the family for several generations. I have six Stephen Evans's in about two or three generations. John Evans had a brother named Stephen Evans. One of his sons was named Stephen Evans. Stephen Evans Sr. had a brother named Robert. The two Evans in SC and Georgia are sons of Robert. John Evans had son named Stephen. Therefore, there are several generations of Stephen Evans' in my family tree. They were all born in Virginia.

What do you know about the parents of William Evans Sr. of Caroline County, Virginia? I have traced a William Evans to Burke County, Georgia. He lived there around 1814. He signed a deposition about his grandfather, "Trading" John Evans. My William Evans probably moved from Viginia to Edgefield County, South Carolina. By 1814, he had moved to Burke County, Georgia. I do not know his wife's name. I do have a real estate item from Edgefield County, SC which I believe has his wife's name but I cannot find it now. I feel that my William Evans was the son of Robert Evans. Robert Evans was born around 1701 in Virginia. I do not have any date of births of the children of Robert Evans which would include my William Evans. If my thinking is correct, one of William Evans's brothers would be Batte Evans of Edgefield County, SC. The dates are confusing. In the deposition, William Evans talks about "Trading" John Evans as if he knew him personally. "Trading" John Evans died around 1713. The dates do not make sense.

One thing I might mention to you about the use of Senior and Junior. The head of my local genealogy library warned me about the use of Junior and Senior in the 1700's. They were used differently from what they would be used today. In the 1700's, senior and junior were just used to identify the difference between two people with the same name. They did not need to father and son. They could be uncle and nephew. I have only found one or two other people who seem to remember this. Also, there was no such thing as a William Evans III at that time. I think this is one problem in who one of my relatives married. There were three Robert Hicks. I think when the first Robert Hicks died, his son became Robert Hick Sr. Many people do not know wheither Winifred Evans married Robert Hick Sr. or Jr. I think this practice is the reason for the comfusion.

What do you think or know?

Brian Evans
Hi, Yes it has been a while. I don't have that Mary Rhodes in my files. I do see the marriage record for her and Wylie Martin, but I don't know which Rhodes line she belongs to. I have most of the Benjamin Rhodes and Celia Redden Rhodes line in my files. I would be happy to share them with you, if you would like. swammons@charter.net
Hi Ross, I'm sorry but I don't have that book. I only have the deed book and the "Early Georgia Wills" book. In that book this is all I was able to find on Edward Echols.

Edward Echols, dec., Van Allen Echols, adm. Feb 4,181, will annexed. Paid Alfred Carowth, Distributee, by will Nathan Echols, decd. p. 120-22.

This may be the other Edward you refered to since it mentions Nathan.

I have Echols in my family line also but no Edward Echols. I wish you luck on you research....God Bless!

Here are the namesof Echols that show up in the Deed Book A-W 1784-1806.

Edward, Elijah, James, Jane, John, Joseph, Mary, Milner, Nathan, Ob, Peggy, Rebecah, Reuben, Robert.

Edward Echols(Eckles)was married to Jane. Nathan & Elijah were his sons. In 17 Oct. 1791 he is leaving land to his two sons. 23 Sept. 1791 he is selling land to Richard Anderson and Harris Coleman. 29 Apr, 1793 Edward buys land from Jacob Carter, on Log Branch of Beaverdam Creek, 200 acres.
Joseph was married to Mary. In 1 Feb, 1790 they sell land to Uriah Owen 240 acres. It appears that Joseph was a J.P. where he is witness to land being sold 20 May, 1803. Rueben and Milner Echols are also mention as witnesses in the same deed.

I have the deed book and can do look ups for you if you like. I hope this helps. You can e-mail me at cwcritters@sbcglobal.net.

Good luck in you research.

I am searching for two families who are linked and who migrated to Georgia: Clementius Davis (b. abt. 1700 in Maryland), who married Mary Lamar (b. 1718, Maryland; d. 1815, Columbia County, Georgia) and Hardy Davis, whom I believe is descended from Clementius and Mary (b. 1796, North Carolina; d. about 1850, Georgia)and who married Rebecca Osborn (sister of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lamar)of North Carolina.

ALSO, James Lamar, my fifth great-grandfather(b. 1716, Prince Georges County, Maryland; d. 1787, Wilkes County), who received a land grant for his service in the Revolutionary War.

Information on any of these relatives would be most appreciated.

~Karolyn

Thanks for the information. I found in the index of Wilkes co Ga. wills Edward Ecols/Eckles lited in 1779. I went to the Gagenweb site and it listed the wills in will book DD which covered the years 1779 to I believe 1794. It listed Edward Echols,Eckles on page 72 but the wills listed on the Gagenweb site stopped at page 50 for some reason. Maybe the pages after page 50 have been lost. I don't know. You had listed a deed for Edward Echols/Eckles for 1790. I don't know if this was the same Edward Echols/Eckles since he made his will out in 1779 but maybe he just made the will out in 1779 and was still living in 1790 or maybe it was a different Edward Echols/Eckles. Would you by any chance have the Wilkes co Ga will book DD? I know there was an Edward Eckles married to a Jane who died in 1829 in Wilkes co ga. that would have been a different perosn. thanks,Ross

Any info you have would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a huge brick wall with Wiley and Mary in their early years and after 1870. I did find her in the 1880 census living with a daughter but am not sure where she and Wiley died and were buried and do not have all of their children. My ancestor George Ray owned land on Sandy Run off Hardens Creek which was in Wilkes co Ga in the 1790's but is now in Taliaferro co Ga. IF you have time would you please send me the same topo map showing where Sandy Run is or was located? Thanks,Ross
