ANCESTORS - (African-American Family)Children of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong of Pender County, Long Creek Community of North Carolina.

Children
Miles “Mike” Armstrong
Miles (Mike) Armstrong was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. Miles was affectionately known to the family, as “Mike”, married Henrietta (McIntire) Armstrong and resided in Pender County. How many children were born to this union is unknown at this time. However research has verified that a female child, name Elvira was born to this union.

Ms. Elvira Armstrong Messick, daughter of Miles and Henrietta (McIntire) Armstrong was born February 21, 1919 in Pender County. Elvira grew up in the Long Creek Community of Rocky Point. She was united in the bond of Holy Matrimony to Evander Davis Messick on November 21, 1943. The family resided in the Castle Hayne community since 1959. Their union produced a daugther; Lee Etta V. Messick (Jacksonville) and a son; Robert OÂ’Neil Hayes (Wilmington, NC). The union lasted until EvanderÂ’s death June 16, 1982. Elvira quietly departed this life March 1, 1988. At the time of her death she had two (2) grandson, David R. Miller and Robert OÂ’Neil Hayes, Jr. (Wilmington, North Carolina) and two (2) great-grandsons (names unknown).

Herbert Armstrong
Herbert Armstrong was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. Herbert married Aunt Frank and to this union were born three (3) children Ralph Armstrong, Herbert Armstrong, Jr. and Hilary Armstrong, who had a daughter named Elizabeth Meredith.

James Armstrong
Most of the attendees at the upcoming 2000 Armstrong Family Reunion are the descendants of James Armstrong.

James Armstrong, born March 15, 1884, was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. He was born and raised in Pender County, Long Creek Community of North Carolina. James left North Carolina and traveled to the state of Georgia. Here James “Papa” Armstrong met and married Sarah Agnes McCleary (White), born August 2, 1891, in Kings Tree, SC. She was raised in Emmanual County, Vidalia Community of Georgia. Sarah “Mama” attended the First African Baptist Church of Vidalia, GA. James was a sharecropper and later a homesteader.

This union produced thirteen (13) children; Viola (born January 01, 1906), Katie (born September 14, 1908), James “Jimmy” Jr. (born December 11, 1911), Thomas Jefferson “Buster”(born March 20, 1912), Booker T (born ______), Beulah (born August 16, 1916), Odessa (born April 19, 1919), Lerona (born July 10, 1921) Orion “Buck” (born April 1922), Doris (born July 30, 1923), Horace (born October 2, 1924), and Colene (born December 8, 1926), one (1) child was stillborn at birth (date and gender unknown).

The family resided in Emmanuel County were the nine eldest children were born in Vidalia, Georgia. The family moved to Pender County Long Creek, North Carolina, in the early part of 1923. Their the three (3) youngest children Doris, Horace, and Coleen were born in Pender County, North Carolina.

Tony E. Armstrong
Tony E. (middle name unknown) Armstrong was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. Tony married Louvina (maiden name unknown) Armstrong and resided in Pender County for a short while. To this union were born Daisy Armstrong, Viola Armstrong and Hazel Armstrong. Tony E. and Louvina Armstrong also had two (2) adopted children Jay and Guydal (surnames unknown).

Hazel Diranna James Lewis, born March 08, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, was the daughter of Viola Armstrong and the granddaughter of Tony E. and Louvina Armstrong. She resided in Pender County, graduated from Pender County Training School in 1940, and later attended Elizabeth City State Teachers College.

Hazel was united in marriage to Andrew Jackson Lewis. To this union were born son, Sgt. Issac L. Lewis (wife Lossie), Ft. Steward, GA; daughter, Esta Lewis Kennedy, Wilmington, NC; nephew/son, Leroy Hicks (wife Sylvia), Greensboro, NC.

Hazel quietly departed this life December 01, 1986. At the time of her death she had six (6) grandchildren; Dwight, Loretta, Toni, Andrea, Lisa, and Marice (surnames unknown) and one (1) great-grandson; James (surname unknown).

Albert Armstrong
Albert Armstrong was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. We believe he had seven (7) children Jack, Cornell, Ray, Naomi, Dorothy, Roselle, and Earnest who married Sheryl.

Alfred Armstrong
Alfred Armstrong was the son of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. Alfred married Annie Lee (Grant) Armstrong and resided in Pender County for a short while.

Mrs. Augusta Armstrong Moore, daughter of Alfred and Annie Lee (Grant) Armstrong was born May 22, 1905 in Long Creek, North Carolina. At an early age, she came to Wilmington, North Carolina with her parents where she was reared and resided for her lifetime.

Augusta was united in the bond of Holy Matrimony to Reverend Fred W. Moore in 1916. To this union, eleven (11) children were born; Alfred Moore, Sammuel Moore (wife Christine), Wilmington, NC; Hazel Moore Layne, Durham, NC; Aruthur Moore (wife Beatrice), Wilmington, NC; Augusta Moore MacRae (husband George), Wilmington, NC; James E. Moore (wife Juanita), Wilmington, NC; Lawrence Moore, Wilmington, NC; Dorothy Moore Shepard (husband Thomas), Wilmington, NC; Estella Moore Dixon (husband Claude), Durham, NC; Willie J. Moore (wife Ruby), Hartford, CT; Mable L. Moore Miller (husband Charles), Durham, NC.

Augusta quietly departed this life October 27, 1992. At the time of her death she had twenty-nine (29) grandchildren; Marion Heggins, Sandra Jackson, Bernard Moore, Arthur Moore, George MacRar, Carolyn Lee, Marcia Michael, Sheila MacRae, Lionel Shepard, Cheryl Walker, Jerry Anderson, Ralph Cue, Carter Cue, Valerie Miller-Cox, Roderick Miller, Linda Torres, Rose Marie, Jimnez, Joe Nita Garcia, Michael Moore, Bernard Moore, Vernita Fullwood, Deborah Rogers, Joyce Adams, Nathaniel Dixon, Alicia Dixon, Kimberly Dixon, Venita Chevers, Freddie Moore, Valeria Moore, and fourty-two (42) greatgrandchildren (names unknown).

Joseph Armstrong

Mary Virginia Armstrong
Many attendees at the 2000 Armstrong Family Reunion are the descendants of Mary Virginia (Armstrong) Larkins.

Mary Virginia Armstrong was the daughter of Miles and Rachel (Larkins) Armstrong. Mary Virginia married Joseph F. Larkins of Pender County, North Carolina. To this union were born three (3) daughters, TÂ’Ester Larkins (Cole), Lottie Larkins (Haynes) and Minnie Larkins (Knight). They resided in Pender County, North Carolina.

TÂ’Ester (Larkins) Cole, born December 6, 1896 was the daughter of Joseph F. Larkins and Mary Virginia (Armstrong) Larkins. She received her elementary and high school education in the Pender County schools and taught in the area. She attended State Teachers College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. TÂ’Ester was a firm believer in personal growth and education, and encouraged family and friends to pursue goals toward excellence.

TÂ’Ester was united in marriage to Cullen Cole, to this union was born one (1) daughter; Marguerite (Cole) Robinson. They resided in Queens, New York. She was very civic minded and as a result was elected a Queens County, New York Committeewoman.

TÂ’Ester passed on to a better life on May 6, 1896, in Flushing, New York. At the time of her death she had two (2) granddaughters Janice (Montclair, New Jersey) and Andrea (Queens, New York) surnames unknown.

Lottie (Larkins) Haynes, born October 25, 1900 was the daughter of Joseph F. Larkins and Mary Virginia (Armstrong) Larkins. She received her elementary and high school education in the Pender County.

Lottie was united in marriage to Pete Haynes they resided in Long Creek, North Carolina and later moved to Hackensach, New Jersey. She was the mother of three (3); one (1) son; Asa Nixon, and two (2) daughters; Wilimenia McCoy (no children) and Mary Goldie (no children).

Lottie passed on to a better life on May 29, 1883, in Burgaw, North Carolina. At the time of her death she had eleven (11) grandchildren from her son; Jerry Lee, Rosie, Danny, Joseph, Maxie, Velma, Murial, Katie, Barbara, James Ace and Carnell (surnames believe to be Nixon).

Minnie (Larkins) Knight, born ____________was the daughter of Joseph F. Larkins and Mary Virginia (Armstrong) Larkins. She received her elementary and high school education in the Pender County.

Minnie was united in marriage to Martin Knight they resided in _____________ and later moved to _________. She was the mother of four (4) children; three (3) daughters; Ruby (Knight) Lopez, (husband Pedro, Alma (Knight) Miller, (husband Sam) and Hazel (Knight) Murphy (husband Bonnie), and one (1) son; Belvin “Uncle Bo” Knight (wife Gertrude Brewington).
Minnie passed on to a better life on __________, in ____________. At the time of her death she had _____________.
