Here is what I know:
A woman named "Henretta" was widowed and living with her children in 1920 in Minton, Worth County, GA. She was 53, which puts her birth about 1867. The head of that household was Jefferson Davis (JD) Benton b *1895*; d 1934. There are Ancestry death records for Henretta Benton that match these facts well.

A marriage record and a family history book reveal Henretta Calhoun married Andrew Benton in *1897*. OOPS!

So Jefferson Davis' biological father is still a mystery.

I am assuming (danger!) that Henretta was married to a Calhoun when she conceived JD (see 1900 census in Schley County GA). Either they divorced or the Calhoun husband died. In addition, I have heard from JD's sister's kin that Henretta may have been a Gardner...
