Thank you for trying, Merissa! I suspect that the crash wasn't reported because such mishaps in training missions were unfortunately too common, or the military purposely blacked-out news coverage of such accidents (or enemy attacks) for propaganda reasons. Thanks again...

Aloha Mamo Ahina,

I noticed you mentioned a Kaumehameha and Mealii as the parents of Kahalokahoupokapu. I was wondering, where did you get the information on that? I tried to do a general search online and couldn't find anything on them.

Oh, and just to let you know, there are a couple things that I personally found interesting regarding Harriet Blanchard Townsend, daughter of Andrew Henri Blanchard and Kahalokahoupokapu:

1) Here is an obituary of hers in a Hawaiian newspaper printed 1911. My understanding of Hawaiian is very basic, but I can determine that she was born in 1831 and that her father was the captain that brought the first missionaries to Hawaii. It also states she was buried at a church names Kawaiahao. Perhaps you can understand more if your Hawaiian is better than mine. Here is the link: http://papakilodatabase.com/pdnupepa/cgi-bin/pdnupepa?a=d&am...----#

2) I also managed to find a photo of the actual gravestone of Harriet K. Blanchard Townsend with her full name and birth-death year, which corresponds to everything else we've discovered so far. The gravestone is at a Kawaiahao Church, which matches up with the Hawaiian newspaper. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=To...;

So now that I know she is real, and her father was the captain of Thaddeus, I guess I'm curious now about who her father Andrew Henri was, and her maternal grandparents, Kaumehameha and Mealii were.

Thanks for all the help so far. This is so interesting to me.

Oh, and one more thing there was another newspaper article about Harriet Townsend in Hawaiian that I couldn't fully make out. If your Hawaiian is better than mine, perhaps you can take a look at it: http://papakilodatabase.com/pdnupepa/cgi-bin/pdnupepa?a=d&am...----#

It would be good to find out if there is such a person. What do you need from me? When did you come to New Mexico? Who is your stepsister?? Is she from Hawaii? Can you get her to message me on Ancestry?
Thanks. Look forward to hearing from you.

Actually there were four in Waioli and several in wainiha and kalalau. Kaheleiki and Kuhaulua were brothers. We continue to maintain three. One is next to waioli river LCAW. 9072 . The other two kalo parches are behind hanalei elementary. The family line is thru Kaheleiki

Thanks, we found quite a few newspaper articles about the crash when he was killed.

I got a copy of his RAF service record which gave a few more details, he went to Canada to join the Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force and I think had some training there.

I can't see anything to suggest that he had done any flying before then.

I had not realised that the American draft applied to anyone resident in the US, even if not naturalised. Perhaps service in the RFC was more attractive than serving in the infantry though it was still very dangerous.

He was shot down and wounded more than once.

MB

But if she was born in Lahaina then these could be her parents who married in 1852.

I am trying to find out more William Harrison WILLIAMS, he was born in 1893 in Wrexham, North Wales though he often puts his place of birth as Bangor, North Wales where he lived later.

He served in the Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force in WWI and his service record shows that he worked as a clerk for the Honumu Sugar Company between 15 Feb 1915 and July 1917 but I have not been able to find him travelling to Hawaii or the USA yet - his name is often recorded as just William WILLIAMS which is a very common name.

I am wondering if anyone knows any good sources about Hawaii where I might pick up some clues?

Also does anyone know much about the Honomu Sugar Company, I am wondering if there was any connection with North Wales - any of the owners or senior staff from there perhaps.

He travelled to the San Francisco when the USA entered WWI, his draft card records him as a sailor with the company.

He then went to Canada to join the RFC before travelling to Britain and serving in the RFC and RAF.

He returned to the USA in 1920 where he showed that he was planning to be a sugar planter in Hawaii. It is not clear whether actually did go there or stopped en route but he worked for an airline in Spokane in Washington state where he died in a plane crash.

MB

Pualinui Conway is my Great-Grandmother's great-grandmother. She is buried in Homelani Cemetary in Hilo, born 1838 in Puna, died 1909 in Hilo. Looking for any information on this woman.

I am told her parents were Iopa Kaheana (k) and Kamaka'iwa Keaweheana (w). I would assume they would have been born around 1815. Her grandparents were Keaweheana Keawema'uhili (k) and Keopuhauolimoku (w). I would think they were born around 1790.

Any information on any of these names is greatly appreciated.

Anyone have a manifest from this voyage (or one from 1883)? My grandfather Joseph (Jose) Furtado supposedly arrived in Hawaii 1882 (1883) aboard the Earl of Dalhousie. He was 9 years old. His father, Francisco Furtado, camt to Hawaii in 1880 aboard the Highflyer. I found a partial manifest, but Joseph is not on it.

I am also searching for a copy of the manifest of this ship. I am looking specifically for a Johann Otholt and his wife Helena Margaret "Lena" Otholt and their three daughters. I do not know the names of the 3 little girls, as they died during the voyage. Their last name could also be found as Othold.

Johann and Lena Otholt also had a son while on this voyage, who died at Honolulu harbor. Does anyone know if there was any sort of record kept on the births and deaths during the voyage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is an older post, so I am not sure if you will get this reply.

My Grandmother was a Morales. Her Family immigrated to Hawaii from Puerto Rico between 1921-1923.

My Grandfather was Rodrrigues/Rodriguez. His Father was born illegitimate in Puerto Rico with the surname Acevedo and legally changed it to Rodriguez in 1945. Half the Family uses the proper Spanish spelling, the other half uses the Portuguese spelling. They immigrated with the first wave from Puerto Rico, between 1900 and 1901.

Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

I'd love the info. I will be in Lahaina in Feb so I can do additional followup. My direct email is bbortfeld@comcast.net

JA Bortfeld was my great grandfather. I have gathered lots of info on him and his family, but the immigration data has been elusive, and/or confusing. I have a manifest page from 1889 arriving in Honolulu from Seattle on board the Australia. I know he was in Seattle around that time. There is a note about arriving from Germany on the Winckleman! I cannot trace that either. Thanks and Mele Kalikimaka, Bob Bortfeld

Hi,

Yes, on page 12 of the Ehrenfels manifest there is an entry for J.A. Bordfeld, wife, 3 children. Also in the records of the Lihue Lutheran Church on Kauai there are baptism entries for three additional Bordfeld children, born 1883, 1884, and 1886. I'd be glad to copy those entries for you, if you don't already have that info.

Sarah Haude

This thread has been going for awhile. Thanks. I am looking for evidence of passengers BORTFELD. Here's my reference: John August Bortfeld Born in Duesseldorf, Germany, May 28, 1845, arrived with his wife and three children in Honolulu April 28, 1883 on the German bark Ehrenfels by way of the Horn. His first work was on the island of Kauai as a coffee worker for the Grove Farm. In 1897 the family moved to Lahaina where Mr. Bortfeld constructed the first rail road system and built the first tunnel for the Pioneer Mill Company.

She married John Rodrigues, Jr. and had Charles, William, Lucille, Major Aukai, Rose, Patricia, Kathryn, Olivia and Hannah.
