Thomas Jay Dunford, loving patriarch of our family, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at his home. He was born Oct. 4, 1931 in Bloomington, a son of Thomas Jefferson and Ruth Dora Hulme Dunford.
After being raised in Bloomington, he moved to Logan, to attend college with his brother and sister. He then lived in Provo and Salt Lake City and has resided in Sunset for the past forty-eight years. He graduated from Fielding High School in Paris and LDS Business College. He also attended Utah State University, Brigham Young University and Weber State College.
He was employed at HAFB, retiring after twenty years of service. He worked as a custodian at Weber State University, also retiring after many years.
On June 6, 1962, Thomas married Joan Newton in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they have been happily married for fifty-one years.
Thomas was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served as Stake Missionary, Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader, Music Leader, Young Men’s Secretary, Priesthood Teacher, Stake Sunday School President and Ward Sunday School President.
He was a long time chartered member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Eagle Scout, Explorer Ranger, Award of Merit and Silver Beaver.
Thomas enjoyed reading, listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, watching BYU and Weber State football games, gardening, visiting friends, attending LDS Temples and especially loved family gatherings. He also wrote poetry, some of which was published in the Weber State Post.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; his four sons, Thomas (Teresa) Dunford, Eugene (Trina) Dunford, David (Tracey) Dunford, Patrick (Allison) Dunford and his ten grandchildren, Tristan, Tyson (Jayme), Rachel, Ashley, Braden, Adam, Cody, Derek, Devin and Easton. He is also survived by his sisters, Leah Dunford Parkinson Christensen, Ann Marie Dunford Rogers Budge; brother, Joe Dunford and brother-in-law, Lewis Elison.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert Dunford and Hulme Dunford; sisters, Nadine Nelson and Elaine Ellison; in-laws, Vera Dunford, Carol Dunford, Edwin F. Rogers, T. Jay Nelson, Paul Parkinson and Chris Christensen.
Funeral Services were held on Oct. 14, at the Sunset Stake Center, Sunset, Utah.
Interment was in the Aultorest Memorial Park.
