Hello, Thank you for sending this e-mail this morning. My grandfather was found in some Army hospital records. His name was Arthur Steffen and he lived through through the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. He was in the Army. Concerning the military records, I cannot tell why he was in the hospital. But, there were other patients who had to be escorted to other states and possibly other hospitals because they had mental problems.
My family has suffered with depression for generations and we inherited this illness from ancestor. I was wondering if Arthur was sent to American Falls, Idaho because I have found Steffen names there and there are other Steffen relatives buried in a graveyard in Blackfoot Idaho where 'Blackfoot South' is still at. Maybe he was living with Steffen relatives and had a breakdown.
I have found Arthur Steffen's discharge record on Ancestry and it did not say why he was discharged. The reason was left blank while all the other discharged veterans had a reason on for leaving the military.
Maybe he was there when he met my grandmother. Blackfoot South was their Northern neighbor.
Arthur immigrated form Sweden He died in Blackfoot at his in-laws ranch and was buried at Grove City. My mother was born in 1915 and Arthur died in 1916.
I am sorry for such a long e-mail. Thank you for your patience. I am very grateful.
Sincerely,
Shawna
