There were two possibilities of this "Joseph Moran" having been born in California. However, in your message you state that Joseph left with his older brother at the age of 12 (given this age they left around about 1889/1890). The one family with the Joseph Moran place his age at 6 in 1880, but he had no older brother, only two older sisters. However, in the census enumeration below you will find an older brother (Paul) and an older sister (Mary), then leaving Joseph and a baby brother (James). It is unclear as to what happened to both Mary and James after the 1880 census for there are no clear pictgure as to where they went to or didn't go to.

These are all the possibilities for the "Paul Moran" however you will find that I tried to match as close as possible unless other clue(s) will have me think otherwise. Now in the last two census (1880 & 1900). It states that he was born in Chile rather than Ireland as other census shown. Below in my notation from Wikipedia that there were Irish Chilean (see below). Another factor was the 1863-1865 California Civil War listing with "CW" as his birth place, could this be Chile too?

NOTE: Irish Chileans (in Spanish: Irlandés-chileno or Hibernochileno, Irish: Gael-Sileánach) are the inhabitants of Chile who either came from some part of the island of Ireland or are descendants of immigrants from there. Generally coming in the 18th century and early 19th century, the generally Catholic Irish were seeking refuge from the oppression of the Protestant-run government of the Kingdom of Great Britain. Spain, being a Catholic power, enticed many Irish to move to Latin America. Immigration reduced later in the 19th century as Catholic Emancipation made emigration to a Catholic nation less of a vital consideration and as the United States and Canada established themselves as more viable lands for settlement. A large proportion of Irish Chileans are sheep farmers in the Magallanes region of the far south of the country, and the city of Punta Arenas has a large Irish foundation dating back to the 18th century. The most notable Irish Chilean, Bernardo O'Higgins is often referred to as the "Father of Chile", and is commemorated in many places in Chile. (Wikipedia)

Now back to Joseph Moran, below is a marriage record of Joseph and Etta, which later I found out she is Harriet according to the 1900 census record. However, the picture changed for Joseph when he isn't listed in any 1900 census, then he married to Etta in 1904 and then by 1910 census he is married but wife is not listed. Where did she go to? Well it wasn't until 1920 census that I was able to locate Etta in the Insane Asylum in Bingham County until her death in 1953 in which she is buried in that State Hospital cemetery, probably in an unmarked grave. It is unclear as to why she was place there and it seem like it has been since before 1910. Nevertheless, Joseph Moran remarried to a Mrs. May Hammond.

It is here that we will learn of who Mrs. May Hammond is. It is through the Western States Marriage Index that Mrs. May Hammond was Miss May Carle, daughter of Newton J. Carle and Nancy Alice Ogle. The only mentioned of one child throughout Joseph Moran's records was a stepson named Charles Hammond. So if, there is a child between Joseph and May Moran, it has to occurred after 1930.
