In some old family pix from Hailey I found some pictures of George Cutler and May Cutler with dogsleds. They were apparently good friends with my grandparents' families in Hailey (the Heckert family.) If you are related to George and May Cutler from Hailey, you might like to see these pix of them taken around 1920.

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pioneer Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out. Pass this information on to all of your extended family so that they may attend if they are interested.

thank you! I will check into that, although I have not had much luck doing that, so far. I have found no historical records, so far, for the Hoover name. I don't have an Ancestry subscription right now, due to budgeting.

I am also trying to find the connection of Mary Ellen Blaine (Bearce) to the rest of the Blaine family. Any leads there?

According to family lore, which I am sure some of you are aware of, Franklin Bearce was the son of Mary Ellen Blaine and Noble Sullivan Bearce. He (Franklin Bearce) claimed James G. Blaine, his grandfather, was a son of John Blaine and Elizabeth Ann Blaine, as well as a cousin of the Senator, James G Blaine.

I am looking to find out if the following is true or not; Ultimately, Franklin Bearce claimed Mary Ellen Blaine, his mother, was the daughter of James Gillespie Blaine and Nandachine Hoover, who allegedly had a sister, Millicent.

The problem is, I can not find a Nandachine anywhere.

Feel free to contact me at scott@designsatwork.com as well as this forum.

Re: Joseph Moran

BillJan154 (Jan ?),
When you post, post the link to your family tree. That gives the "big picture" on what you already know. You have two trees on the Moran family of your four, this is the link to Joseph Moran on your larger of the two:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/27409332/person/2054391700
Also be very careful in your wordings when you post. Identify if you are looking for ancestors or descendants. Based on your posted family trees (four), it appears you might be looking more for information on the ancestors of Joseph than his descendants. I've address some of that.

Your tree (accessible with Ancestry membership or access at local libraries using their computer system) shows:

Joseph Moran, born 26 July (abt) 1877, in Bishop Creek, CA, died 1 July 1959 in Blaine County, ID.
--he marriet Etta Scoble, born Muldoon, Blaine Co, ID to Richard James Scoble(born in Cornwall, England) and Delilah Jane Swank(born Oregon)

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image database:
Joseph registered at Hailey, Idaho on September 10, 1918 (the last of the Draft Registrations). He was identified as being 41, born July 26, 1877.He was medium in height and build, brown eyes and dark hair. I find about half of these dates of birth off by one year.

The World War II Draft Registration Card Image database (The Old Man's Draft).
Joseph (No Middle Name) Moran, age 64, born July 26, 1877 in Bishop Creek, California.
Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address: Mrs. May Moran (This is NOT a "nearest relative" listing, sometimes the registrant gave employment or friends names). This person was written as "May" not "Mary." He was White, 5'-10" in height, 165 pounds, Gray hair, gray eyes, Ruddy Complexion. He registered on April 27, 1942.
--There are three Bishop Creek, CA. One in Mariposa County, near Yosemite National Park; one in Siskiyou County, near the CA/Oregon border; and, one in Inyo County, near the border with Mono County, along Route 395. The three are just names of Creeks. Only one has a town name nearby of Bishop, the one in Inyo County. I checked the US Geological Survey to see if there were any "historically" named populated areas, without success. There are many times were a name found for a person was identified being born in the name of the voter precinct.

The 1880 Census of Vallejo, Solano Co, CA
Paul Moran, age 42, Miner, born in "Chillie" (Chile)
Paul, 8
Mary 6,
Joseph, 4
James, 2. All children born in CA, no mother listed).
---This is the only "Joseph Moran" found in the 1880 Census. There is NO PROOF this is the correct person. This Joseph was four, which could put his birth to 1875, depending on the date of his birth and the enumeration date of the census. This "father" does not show his wife, so, if this "is" the correct Joseph, he may have lived in an orphange etc. But, there is no proof of that. The "correct" person does not appear (readily) in the 1900 or 1910 census, with a person born in California. BUT, the information in the US Census was often wrong.

The 1930 Census of Bellevue, Blaine County, ID
Joseph Moran, age 53, was shown as born in California to both parents born in CA. So, was this correct or was this the only "guesstimate" available, if given by Joseph or his wife, or even his stepson. This Joseph is shown as being first married at age 21 (about 32 years before [1897/1898] so, he could have been married in the 1900 Census).

Since you are new to genealogy, here is a link to a good posting:
http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html As you progress in your research, I'd suggest doing it yourself, it is more rewarding that way AND you know you are getting the correct information versus wrong information provided by volunteers. BUT, documentary evidence (census, death certificates, birth certificates, etc) are often wrong themselves, do not trust any document until you can match it with other proof. Do NOT trust someone's family tree. I, on a daily basis, find wrong information being posted. I'm constantly correcting mistakes made, or adding information overlooked or misquoted. Do NOT trust anyone that "assumes" information not based on evidence. "I couldn't find them so they must have died..." I think I've found one of the worst genealogists online, a CONSTANT battle to correct errors and send information off list to the original poster.

There are MANY resources online to find the images of the US Census, genealogy records, etc. Far to many for me to list.

Thank you Matt!
I could never link Paul Moran to my g-grandfathers family. However I believe you are correct that he is Joe's father, as I too keep running into his data. The story was that he and his brother left Bishop because the parents died. Also that there was property left behind in San Francisco , which for a boy could be a part truth to another story. He and Harriett (Etta) had 3 children. He and May had no children.

Here's a map from David Ramsey Map Collection that you will find Muldoon, Idaho.

http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~30...+

You will need to pan the map larger to view it better. Go to the middle of the state until you find Hailey, Idaho. Once you have found it look to the right of Hailey and to the left of Martin. You'll find Muldoon in the center. Hope this helps.

Matt Friend

Military Service personnel medical records transfer with the service man. They pick up the records and take to the next assignment or they are transfered. Upon discharge, these medical records go to the Military Records Center, the National Archives.

They are restricted to immediate family members:
http://familyresearchlibrary.com/request_military_file.htm

Mary Lou,

But can Harold R. really be Robert Henry, since he appears in the 1910 census as age 3, but his headstone says he was born in 1922? Is it more likely that Harold is Joe (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=81...)? Bob's story was he, Joe, and Delia moved to California shortly as the death of the father, John H., the same year as Bob's birth. This begs the question: what happened to the other two children? Thanks!

Maude D. Mizer, age 6 b. Idaho
John W. Mizer, age 4 b. Idaho
Harold R. Mizer, age 3 b. Idaho
Thank you. I guess I was confused by the name changes. So, Harold R. (I assume that's R for Robert) renamed himself Robert Henry "Bob" and John W. became Joe? Do you know what became of Maude? Bob Mizer achieved a level of notoriety in Los Angeles. This might explain who the "several unrelated lodgers" were:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Mizer

Bruce
Hi....the children seem pretty straightforward in the census'. In both the 1910 and the 1920 census John H and Delia are living in Hailey, Idaho with three children: Maude D, John W, and Harold R. Then in 1930 Delia is a widow living in Los Angeles with her son who is now calling himself Robert H (Harold R). She is managing a rooming house and there are several unrelated lodgers living there.

Delia dies in Los Angeles on September 22, 1964. Her mother's maiden name was Huntsman.

mary lou

There was a Delia Mizer (1882-1964) who moved to Los Angeles with her sons Joe (1907-1992)and Robert Henry(1922-1992) shortly after the death of her husband. I would think there weren't a lot of Delia Mizers from Idaho who were born in 1882, but the children listed in the other response muddy the waters a bit.

Hi,
My name is Chloe and I work at Cornwall Record Office in Truro, Cornwall, England. We hold a series of letters from Richard J Scoble that he wrote to his mother after emigrating to the USA; I believe he is your ancestor as your research through the censuses supports mine! I'm about to start a research project about these fascinating letters (which are also about to feature in a BBC TV series!). I'm happy to share all the results of my research with you (when I have any!) and, in the meantime, I was hoping you might be able to help me by telling me when Richard J Scoble died and if you, by any chance, have a photo of him? I'd also be interested in any other information that you can share. I look forward to hearing from you.

However, in your message you state that Joseph left with his older brother at the age of 12 (given this age they left around about 1889/1890). The one family with the Joseph Moran place his age at 6 in 1880, but he had no older brother, only two older sisters. However, in the census enumeration below you will find an older brother (Paul) and an older sister (Mary), then leaving Joseph and a baby brother (James). It is unclear as to what happened to both Mary and James after the 1880 census for there are no clear pictgure as to where they went to or didn't go to.

Ancestry's 1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Joseph Moran
Home in 1880: Vallejo, Solano, California
Age: 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876
Birthplace: California
Relation to Head of Household: Son
Father's name: Paul Moran
Father's birthplace: Chile (Ireland in 1860/1870)
Mother's birthplace: California
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Household Members: Name & Age (Status) Martial [Occupation]
Paul Moran 42 (Head) Widowed [Miner]
Paul Moran 8 (Son)
Mary Moran 6 (Daughter)
Joseph Moran 4 (Son)
James Moran 2 (Son)

So with Paul Moran as the father, I side-tracked to find him in the census records and found these:

Ancestry's Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
Year: 1852
Place: San Francisco, California
Source Publication Code: 7156
Primary Immigrant: Moran, P
Annotation:	Covers 1850-1864, but mostly the year 1850. Now in the last two census (1880 & 1900). It states that he was born in Chile rather than Ireland as other census shown. Below in my notation from Wikipedia that there were Irish Chilean (see below). Another factor was the 1863-1865 California Civil War listing with "CW" as his birth place, could this be Chile too?

NOTE: Irish Chileans (in Spanish: Irlandés-chileno or Hibernochileno, Irish: Gael-Sileánach) are the inhabitants of Chile who either came from some part of the island of Ireland or are descendants of immigrants from there. Generally coming in the 18th century and early 19th century, the generally Catholic Irish were seeking refuge from the oppression of the Protestant-run government of the Kingdom of Great Britain. Spain, being a Catholic power, enticed many Irish to move to Latin America. Immigration reduced later in the 19th century as Catholic Emancipation made emigration to a Catholic nation less of a vital consideration and as the United States and Canada established themselves as more viable lands for settlement. A large proportion of Irish Chileans are sheep farmers in the Magallanes region of the far south of the country, and the city of Punta Arenas has a large Irish foundation dating back to the 18th century. The most notable Irish Chilean, Bernardo O'Higgins is often referred to as the "Father of Chile", and is commemorated in many places in Chile. (Wikipedia)

Now back to Joseph Moran, below is a marriage record of Joseph and Etta, which later I found out she is Harriet according to the 1900 census record. However, the picture changed for Joseph when he isn't listed in any 1900 census, then he married to Etta in 1904 and then by 1910 census he is married but wife is not listed. Where did she go to? Well it wasn't until 1920 census that I was able to locate Etta in the Insane Asylum in Bingham County until her death in 1953 in which she is buried in that State Hospital cemetery, probably in an unmarked grave. It is unclear as to why she was place there and it seem like it has been since before 1910. Nevertheless, Joseph Moran remarried to a Mrs. May Hammond.

Western States Marriage Index's Details For Marriage ID#63201
Groom Last Name: MORAN
Groom First Name: Joseph
Groom Residence: (Bellevue)
Bride Last Name: SCOBLE
Bride First Name: Etta
Bride Residence: (Bellevue)
Place: Bellevue
Date: 12 Jun 1904
County of Record: Blaine
State: Idaho
Vol: 1; Pg: 318

Ancestry's 1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Joseph Moran
Age in 1910: 32
Estimated Birth Year: 1878
Birthplace: Nevada
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Ireland
Mother's Birth Place: Germany
Home in 1910: Carey, Blaine, Idaho
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Household Members: Name & Age (Status) Martial [Occupation]
Joseph Moran 32 (Head) Married 6yrs [Rancher]
Walace Billingsley 18
Alfred T Billingsley 20

Ancestry's 1920 United States Federal Census
Name: Joseph Moran
Home in 1920: Deep Creek, Twin Falls, Idaho
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878
Birthplace: California
Relation to Head of House: Lodger
Father's Birth Place: Ireland
Mother's Birth Place: California
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Male
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Household Members: Name & Age
James Coleman 31
Joseph Moran 42 (Lodger) Miner

Ancestry's 1920 United States Federal Census
Name: Harriet Moran
Home in 1920: Idaho State Insane Asylum, Bingham, Idaho
Age: 32
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Birthplace: Idaho
Relation to Head of House: Patient
Father's Birth Place: England
Mother's Birth Place: Oregon
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Female
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes

It is here that we will learn of who Mrs. May Hammond is. It is through the Western States Marriage Index that Mrs. May Hammond was Miss May Carle, daughter of Newton J. Carle and Nancy Alice Ogle. The only mentioned of one child throughout Joseph Moran's records was a stepson named Charles Hammond. So if, there is a child between Joseph and May Moran, it has to occurred after 1930.

Western States Marriage Index's Details For Marriage ID#59762
Groom Last Name: MORAN
Groom First Name: Joseph
Groom Residence:
Bride Last Name: HAMMOND (Maiden Name: CARLE)
Bride First Name: May
Bride Residence:
Place: Shoshone
Date: 1 Sep 1921
County of Record: Lincoln
State: Idaho
Vol: 3; Pg: 288

Ancestry's 1930 United States Federal Census
Name: Joseph Moran
Home in 1930: Bellevue, Blaine, Idaho
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Birthplace: California
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: May Moran
Race: White
Household Members: Name & Age
Joseph Moran 53 (Head)
May Moran 49 (Wife)
Charles Hammond 12 (Stepson)
John J Chapman 41 (Lodger)

Ancestry's U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
Name: Joseph Moran
Birth Date: 26 Jul 1877
Birth Place: Bishop Creek, California (now Bishop, Inyo, California)
Residence: Bellevue, Idaho
Race: White

Find-a-Grave Info:
Name: Harriet Moran
Birth: 1884
Death: Aug. 19, 1953
Burial: State Hospital South Cemetery
Location: Blackfoot, Bingham County, Idaho, USA

State of Idaho Death Index
ID: 222785
Name of Deceased: MORAN, MAY C.
Year: 1954
Certificate Number: 2323
County of Death: TWIN FALLS
City: TWIN FALLS
Date of Death: 6/27/1954
Date of Birth: 08/16/1879

Well I hope this was of help to you.
According to http://www.earthpoint.us/townships.aspx, Section 6 of Range 23E of Township 1N from the Boise Meridian figures to the following corners which you can paste into Google Maps. (The link above will fly you right to the section in Google Earth if you have it installed.)

Section 6
NW Corner = 43.454588300, -113.773722600
NE Corner = 43.454557800, -113.753836900
SE Corner = 43.440220000, -113.753929700
SW Corner = 43.440138700, -113.773806900

Now, your ancestor's claim amounted to the northernmost 1/4 of this section - the whole section from West to East. So, if I'm figuring this out right, that amounts to:

Grandpa's Claim
NW Corner = 43.454588300, -113.773722600
NE Corner = 43.454557800, -113.753836900
SE Corner = 43.450973350, -113.753860100
SW Corner = 43.450975900, -113.773743675

And, the center of the claim would be 43.452773838	-113.763790819. It seems to have bridged the creek. Grandpa was smart! Water is very important in Idaho! In fact, if you look at it, it makes sense why he claimed four lots in row instead of a square as might be more common in flat places. His claim seems to run right along the valley.

It seems to be along Fish Creek Road, about halfway between Bellevue and Arco. It's not too far from Craters of the Moon National Monument, but in the nearby mountains.

I don't live in Blaine County, so I leave it to Mary to address what's actually there!

I'm not a land patent expert, so it might do to double-check my work!

Link to Grandpa's claim: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=&q=43.452773838%09-113.76...

You're right, the Richard and Charles are not of my family, but the James definitely is! I'm kind of shocked that this claim was made only a few months after the death his son, Richard.

This is my first foray into land deeds. I'm interested in finding out what happened to the claim and the land itself. Thank you so much for this head-start!

Mark

(By the way, the Richard Crooks that comes up is completely different fellow from Idaho County in the northern part of the state - son of Jacob Crooks and Victoria Chamberlain.) However, I don't know the coverage for the database.

_____________________________________________________

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/results/default.aspx?searchCri...

It does seem that James G. Crooks claimed some land in Blaine County. (Those search results will also show you Charles Crooks, but he also seems to be of the Idaho County Crooks, not your family.)

"1) What was going on in Idaho in the early 20th Century that could have drawn a teamster/miner/adventurous spirit such as my grandfather and one of his sons out there, and why again in the late 1920s/1930s for the other son?"

Gold & Silver mining was the big draw at the beginning of the century. Idaho was growing quickly, with a lot of opportunity for enterprising individuals. My family moved to Blaine county permanently at that time, although they had also been here in the early 1880's. My grandfather had worked in the gold fields East of Boise in the 1890's, and moved to Blaine county to work in the Silver mines here.

He leaves two brothers in Boise and a father, who will arrive from Kentucky this evening, he having been notified of his son's serious condition on Sunday.
The Cursde of Idaho

*Crossposted from "Unknown" "Ada County" and "Gooding County" forums*

OK, it's probably not Idaho's fault, but in actuality, I have two people in my tree (brothers, to be exact) who both left Kentucky and moved to Idaho and I don't know why. One died within a year of moving out there. Almost exactly 30 years later, the other one did, too. And I don't know why. And, on top of all that, it would seem their father went out there first prior to 1910 and, guess what? I don't know why! :)

So, I'm wondering a few things about Idaho and what happened to my family out there. First, let me give a little information.

In 1900, my gggf, a widower named James Gibson Crooks, was living in a boarding house in Kentucky with his older son (Richard Earl Crooks - 17 at the time) and working as a team driver. His younger son (Charles Gibson Crooks) was living with his maternal grandfather and his two sisters. Both boys were born in Colorado when their father moved out there to try to make his fortune in the Colorado Silver Boom. He had an adventurous spirit, I suppose.

Some time between 1900 and 1910, James moved to Casey, Blaine County, Idaho. Richard was still living in Kentucky with his wife, Jennie, and three daughters, Margaret, Georgia, and Dorothy, working as a blacksmith at a steel mill. I don't know why, but at some point between mid 1910, when the census was taken, and January, 1912, Richard moved to Idaho and was working as a teamster. I'm not certain yet if his family was with him. On Feb. 1, 1912, Richard died in Boise, Ada County, Idaho.

After Richard's death, James moved back to Kentucky, where, by 1920, he lived with his son, Charles (still unmarried) in the house of his daughter's father-in-law. In 1927, James died. Some time between then and 1941, Charles moved out to Idaho where he died as well on Jan 3, 1941, in Wendell, Gooding County, Idaho. Richard and Charles were both buried back in Kentucky.

So, my questions are as follows:

1) What was going on in Idaho in the early 20th Century that could have drawn a teamster/miner/adventurous spirit such as my grandfather and one of his sons out there, and why again in the late 1920s/1930s for the other son?

2) When did he go out there?

3) When (specifically) and why did Richard go to Idaho and was he alone or with his family.

4) How did Richard die?

5) When and why did Charles go to Idaho?

6) How did he die?

The first question is what I'm really bringing to this forum. Given that, I could probably start piecing together the rest. However, if anyone has any insight on the rest, I would appreciate it, as well.

Thanks in advance,

Mark Songer

Hi......the Community Library has quite an extensive local history department. You may want to try them:

http://www.thecommunitylibrary.org/regionalhistory/

mary lou

My late father Harold Mueller was asked to teach at the 1966 Sun Valley Music Camp. I know from a Texas newspaper article that the Camp was founded in 1963, and had grown quite a bit in three years, but I've not been able to find out anything else.

Google and Bing are not being particularly helpful. Does anyone have any information or history of these camps?

HI Lisa,
The census info is from ancestry.com ($)
How fortunate your G-Grandfather kept a diary, what a treasure! Spring of Gladness has been a great peek into the early history and people of this area.
I'll let you know if I have anyone from the Little Wood River or Carey to look up.

Donna

Donna, thank you very much for this info! The 1850 census'
is what I have been trying to get access to since its the first to list all names in household. How did you get access, if you don't mind sharing? The Illinois Brown family is a very good possibility with someone making a mistake in reporting where Garmon was born, PA instead of OH since the next child was born OH. The first definite place I have Garmon is 1870 MO census newly married to Sarah with a servent and no kids, then following census showing all the kids and so on. The Garmon being a maiden name of a mother did cross my mind since I ran across it on someone else' chart. Anyway, thank You very much and if you have any surnames you need info on my G-Grandfather kept journals from about 1900's until about 1940-50's. He had a homestead at Little Wd Resivoir before it was built then other properties around Carey. Its mostly info about his farm but somtimes he'll through in some good stuff about people.
Thanks!!!!!
