Lester Martin “Les” Ruth, 68, of Moore, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the Lost River Hospital in Arco.
Les was born in Auburn, California to Robert and Gretchen Alma Liebenguth Ruth. When Les was six years old his mother passed away while giving birth. He and his siblings were then raised by their father with the help of an Uncle Bill and Aunt Georgia Thomas who treated Les as their own. Les attended school in Auburn until his sophomore year in school, then he moved to Modesto, California where he graduated from Downey High School. While in school he participated in soccer, football and skiing. He went on to earn an associates degree from Modesto JR. College.
Les joined the United States Navy just as the Vietnam was getting started and was stationed in the Pacific but didn’t have to engage in fighting.
Upon his return from the Navy he worked for a short time in the shipyard in San Francisco. However, he didn’t enjoy living in San Francisco so he took a job with Pacific Gas and Electric and moved. He worked for over 40 years for PG&E and retired as an electrical technician. Through the years he worked in many different divisions of PG&E but the majority of his time was spent in the Drum Division. He served as a volunteer fireman and on the rescue squad in Auburn, CA. During his time he was promoted to captain and was named “Fireman of the Year.”
Les married Laurene Gail Merritt on October 25, 1969 in Reno, Nevada. Together they raised five children. They lived the majority of their lives in California and recently moved to the Lost River Valley in the spring of 2006.
He was a member of the Roman Catholic church. He loved fishing, collecting fish and aquariums, racing and showing pigeons, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Les is survived by his wife of 36 years Laurene of Moore, Idaho; three sons, Robert Duffy Jr. (Rebecca) of Roseburg, Oregon, Michael Duffy and Sean Ruth both of Auburn, California; two daughters, Cathleen Davis of Crescent City, California and Tara Ruth of Moore, Idaho; two brothers Douglas Thomas of Modesto, California and Byron Ruth of Forrest Hill, California; a sister Robin (Bob) Langdon of Auburn, California; fifteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great grandchild who will be born in September.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Arco. The family will greet friends at Hawker Lost River Funeral Home from 10:00 to 10:45 on Thursday morning before the service.
Interment was in the Mt. McCaleb Cemetery in Mackay.
