Idaho State Journal, 07/18/13
Our beloved mother, grandmother, relative and friend passed away quietly in the presence of family in Henderson, Nevada on July 15, 2013. She was born Gladys Lucy Holsten on the family ranch near Central, Northwest of Grace, Idaho, November 24, 1915 to Charles G. Holsten and Lucy Lerona (Monroe) Martin.
She attended grade school in Central and later graduated from Grace High School. She studied Cosmetology and became a licensed beautician. While visiting her sister, brother in law and a friend in Oakley, Idaho she met and later married Harold Wesley Hunter at Twin Falls.
Thereafter, they moved back to Grace and opened the Hunter Blacksmith and Welding Shop on East Center Street to serve the growing agricultural community. A John Deere dealership was added during the War years and Gladys added a beauty shop in her Home in the late 1950’s.
Harold suffered a devastating, fatal heart attack in 1965. She continued with the Beauty Shop and married Rulon L. Burton , also a Grace native, in 1969. Gladys and Rulon traveled and enjoyed retirement until his death in 1988.
Her love of people grew out of a close knit family and the hard times of the 1920’s and 30’s. She was an avid cook and very often insisted that no visitor(s) leave her home hungry. She enjoyed gardening and when she was physically able, her cupboards were overflowing with canned vegetables and fruits in anticipation of the coming winter. She took up genealogy and traced the family heritage back to the 1600’s. Her quiet sense of humor, was an indication of her ever present positive outlook, when problems arose and needed a solution.
She loved Grace, the Gem Valley and the many friends who live there. She was a member of the LDS church, the Relief Society and the DUP.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by son; Roger K. Hunter, sisters; Lola, (Grant), Gibson; Ruth, (Merlin), Peterson; and brother; Richard, (ILA), Holsten.
She is survived by son; H. Russell (Elaine) Hunter, daughter; Kathy (John), Williamson, son; Robert (Bob) M. Hunter, step-daughter; Bonnie Burton O’Brian, seven grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Grace LDS Stake Center. The family will visit with friends on Sunday evening from 7-8 pm at the Sims Funeral Home and on Monday morning from 9-9:45 a.m. at the Stake Center prior to services. Burial will be in the Grace Cemetery.
