Eleanor Jean Snell Birdt passed away suddenly at her home in Oak Harbor, WA on July 15, 2013. She was a very beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Eleanor was born on Nov. 12, 1927, the only child of Max Snell and Margaret Snell in Soda Springs, ID. She attended school in Santa Barbara, CA and Soda Springs, graduating in 1945 as president of her senior class.
She married Lt. George Birdt, USN, in Moscow, ID on July 14, 1950 and set off as a successful Navy wife, living in Oceanside and Coronado, CA, Albuquerque, NM, Newport, RI, Paris, France and McLean, VA. She moved to Oak Harbor, WA in 1980 and was an active member of the Retired Officers Club community. She was a life member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her husband, George, at their family home; daughter, Margi Abbott and son-in-law, Brian Abbot of Arlington, WA, daughter, Barbara Birdt Wolpert of Tacoma, WA; grandchildren, Steve Abbott, Cheryl Abbott Jansen, Christopher Wolpert, Stephanie Wolpert, and Jonathan Wolpert; as well as great-grandchildren, Cade Jansen, Tegan Jansen and Cara Wolpert.
Eleanor will be remembered and missed as a woman of great character, outstanding generosity and graciousness. She was wholly dedicated to her family, showering them with love and never, ever missing a birthday or anniversary.
