Verda Monroe Empey, 92 of Soda springs passed away at Caribou Memorial Hospital on Oct. 1, 2013 after a short illness. Verda was born in 8 Mile, Idaho (near Soda Springs) on April 14, 1921 to Alvin Monroe and Vearl Skinner. She was raised on the family farm and learned the value of hard work with her siblings.

Verda attended the elementary schools years on 8 Mile in a one room school house. She attended high school in Soda Springs. After graduating from the U of I Southern Branch which is now ISU she taught grade school for several years. While teaching school, she met Virgil Empey at an LDS stake dance. They were married on April 16, 1948 at her parent’s place on 8 mile. Their marriage was solemnized on Jan. 25, 1952 in Idaho Falls. They had two children; a daughter Delores and a son Roger. Verda enjoyed doing genealogy, woodworking, teaching 4-H and especially spending time with family.

Verda was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in the Primary, Scouting program, Sunday School, Mutual and as a visiting teacher. She served in the Genealogical Library for 28 years. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Verda was a homemaker until her children were older and then went to work for Bailey Creek. She enjoyed the association with her co-workers.

Verda is survived by a daughter Delores (Randy) Eastman of Idaho Falls, ID and a son Roger (Carolee) Empey of Soda Springs, ID. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Leatha Moore and 1 sister-in-law, Dorma Monroe. Verda was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, a grand-daughter, Melissa Empey; parents; Alvin and Vearl Monroe, sisters; Violet Pugmire, DaNoma Lish, Dormilee Monroe, and Marlene Monroe, brothers; Melvin Monroe and Doanald Monroe, 1 sister-in-law, Maria Monroe, 3 brothers-in-law; Reed Pugmire, Leland Lish and Ted Moore.

Funeral services will be Friday Oct. 11, 2013 at noon at the Soda Springs LDS Stake center. A viewing at Sim’s Funeral Home will be held Thurs. Oct. 10, 2013 from 7-8 p.m. A viewing will also be held prior to the services from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
